Cheltenham Festival Issue 7
Gold Cup Preview GOLD CUP PREVIEW Plenty of comparisons have already been made between Arkle and Best Mate, and they’re bound to become even more popular should the best staying chaser of the present day complete a hat-trick of Cheltenham Gold Cup victories in mid-March. Just for the record, the following paragraph from Chasers & Hurdlers 2002/3 may help to put into perspective just how good Arkle really was:- ‘In the 1965/6 season, Arkle ran four times before his third Cheltenham Gold Cup victory, starting off with a twenty-length win under 12-7 in the Gallaher Gold Cup at Sandown in November, setting a time record which still stands for the course and distance. Later that month, Arkle took his second successive Hennessy under 12-7, winning by fifteen lengths from Freddie who received 32 lb. Arkle made it three wins from three starts with victory by a distance in the King George VI Chase before again winning the Leopardstown Chase on his way to Cheltenham. Arkle conceded 42 lb to the second and third at Leopardstown; runner-up Height o’ Fashion, who went down by a neck, did most of her racing in Ireland but was worth a Timeform rating of 168+ whilst third-placed Splash, beaten a further fifteen lengths, had won the previous year’s Irish Grand National and earnt a Timeform rating of 157. Arkle gave them a 43 lb and 55 lb beating respectively and was 10/1-on when making it five out of five for the season when taking Best Mate jumps the second last in splendid isolation twelve month ago 1 Cheltenham Festival Issue the Gold Cup in a canter. -
Day 3 - Thursday
NTF Weekend Notes – 2019 Cheltenham Festival Days 3 & 4 Day 3 - Thursday 1.30 JLT Novices’ Chase – Grade 1 Novices’ Chase – 2m4f – Good to Soft – 10 ran Blindly following runners from this next time out when running again in the same season isn’t quite a profitable ploy – 12/47 | 26% S/R | -£3.31 BFLSP – 2% below expectation – and those entering a handicap next time out (before end of season) are a rather poor 0/10, 1p. Concentrating on the following, however, could be the way to go...ran in JLT LTO | Non-Hcp Chase | 3/5 starts in current season...which gives...10/23 | 43% S/R | +£14.45 BFLSP – W&P 15/23 | 65% S/R – 36% above expectation. Won’t make you rich but it does seem the place to find next time out winners from the JLT. 1st – DEFI DU SEUIL For a wee man he can fairly jump his fences and he looked comfortable and in control throughout this contest. This took his record off a break of 60 days or less to 1211111111 (9/10 – compared to 1/4 off longer breaks) and he clearly relishes being on the go. I’d expect him to be a Ryanair horse rather than a Gold Cup horse next season. 2nd – LOSTINTRANSLATION Jumped for fun on the front end as always and although this was far from a poor effort it does irk me that he’s only won 2 of his 11 starts. He’ll appreciate the step up to 3 miles when it comes but I think, unfortunately, talk of him being a Gold Cup contender is wide of the mark, a future Gold Cup winner would have found his way to the winners enclosure plenty more times in 11 starts than this lad has and that, I fear, will always be his downfall. -

Cheltenham Festival News Sleepy heading to the Champion Hurdle Hughie Morrison reports Not So Sleepy in grand form ahead of a potential tilt at next week’s Champion Hurdle. “Lots of rain and you never know”, he says about the 40/1 shot. Morrison also intends to send Third Wind to the Pertemps who is improving all the time since winning at Wincanton. Looking further ahead to the flat season and Telecaster is back in training and may start off at Sandown in April. Mercurial glory for Ramsay Hats off to Will Ramsay (MFW/RF 1987) who owned, trained and rode Mr Mercurial to victory at Musselburgh early last month. If conditions dry out, Ramsay tells us that the plan is to head to Cheltenham next week for the Foxhunters. If its too soft Aintree may be more on the radar. Good luck Will! Rapper heads to the Pertemps for Butler, Wiggin and Arkwright Rapper with jockey Richard Johnson and Henry Daly will be hoping a happy bunch of owners Honest Vic is on his best behaviour in the Coral Cup Humphrey Butler (JSBP ’75) has been in touch to tell us that he and his fellow owners intend to run Rapper in next week’s Pertemps Final. COMPILED SPECIFICALLY FOR Frankel (GB) STALLION AFFINITY REPORT A comprehensive stallion analysis with all active broodmare sires Copyright © 2020 The Jockey Club Information Systems, Inc. STALLION AFFINITY REPORT TrueNicks: An Explanation Nicks in History Compatibilities between stallions from one sire line with mares of another sire line has helped shape the breed since the Eclipse/Herod cross of the late 18th century. These successful crosses, called nicks, have impacted Thoroughbred development through such examples as Hermit/Stockwell, Lexington/Glencoe, Bend Or/Macaroni, and Phalaris/Chaucer. In the modern era, the prolific Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross has produced outstanding racehorses and sires such as Kingmambo, Distorted Humor, and Elusive Quality. Fast-Forward to the 21st Century Computer databases have made it possible to measure and rate nicks, giving rise to a commercial market for such statistics. The first nick ratings offered to the public, though popular, were compromised by incomplete data and yielded results based on hypothetical rather than actual opportunity. This statistical gap was the impetus behind the development of TrueNicks. A Statistically Valid Approach Unlike other ratings that are calculated based on hypothetical opportunity within a limited group of horses, TrueNicks references the international database of The Jockey Club—the world’s most complete record of Thoroughbreds and their performance—to produce a sophisticated rating based on all starters and stakes winners on a given cross. The Statistics The TrueNicks rating is derived from two statistical elements: the Sire Improvement Index (SII) and the Broodmare Sire Improvement Index (BSII). Each figure compares the percentage of progeny stakes winners to starters. -

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2020 FROM ME TO CA, THESE MO TOWN COLT LEADS THE WAY INTO BOOK 4 AT KEENELAND TRACKS ARE GONE BUT by Brian DiDonato A total of 265 head changed hands for gross receipts of NOT FORGOTTEN $6,278,400 Saturday during the first of two Book 4 sessions of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. The average price was $23,692 and median was $15,000. The RNA rate was a notably low 16.4%. While year-to-year comparisons are perhaps slightly inexact due to a smaller KEENOV catalog this year, during last year=s corresponding sixth session the average was $29,426 and median was $20,000 with a 24.7% buyback rate. Topping the day=s trade Saturday was hip 1913, a colt from the first crop of Mo Town purchased by agent Davant Latham for $185,000. Consigned by Alliance Sales Agency, the Jan. 18 foal hails from the female family of recent local GII Lexus Raven Run S. heroine Venetian Harbor (Munnings) and Hall of Fame sprinter Safely Kept.
