 Practice experience

Robin has experience in relating to investment strategies, structuring (and re-structuring) and establishment of a China entity and often marries them with essential employment, intellectual property and commercial issues. Once operational, she assists with anti- corruption protocols, strong corporate governance, regulatory compliance and government investigations as well as cross-border and domestic contracts (i.e.: sales, overseas manufacturing, distribution, transportation, warehousing and storage). She also evaluates and strategizes regarding China commercial disputes and mediations, employment disputes and arbitration, and intellectual property infringement claims. Robin’s clients include the China subsidiaries and affiliates and their parents of North American, Australian, UK and European small to multinational corporations in the private and public sectors. The matters she has handled involved food, garment, equipment and luxury product manufacturing and distribution, hospitality and hotels, and IT and consultancy service businesses as well as government commercial offices and individuals.

Working Experience: Robin has almost three decades of legal and business experience in the US and Asia and has lived and worked in Shanghai for 18 years. She started with Duan & Duan in June 2015 as a Senior Foreign Counsel. For the prior ten years, she worked in Shanghai as a Senior Foreign Counsel for reputable law firms, including Haworth & Lexon and Grandall Law Firm, both full service Chinese law firms, and Blake Dawson, one of the largest Australian law firms. When Robin arrived in Shanghai in 1997, she immediately became involved with cross-border business. She started her career as a Corporate Litigation Attorney in in 1985 spending almost 10 years working for Lester Schwab Katz & Dwyer, Cooperman Levitt & Winikoff, P.C., and Jackson & Nash handling complex litigation cases from trial to appeal. She received licenses to practice law as a USA Attorney in New York, New Jersey, Washington D.C., and Florida states in 1986.

Education: Ms. Kaptzan graduated from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida USA earning a B.B.A. (Cum Laude) in 1982 and University of Miami School of Law, Coral Gables, Florida USA earning a Juris Doctor in 1985. She has had numerous leadership positions with the American Bar Association, Section of International Law since 2007, including the Co-Chair of its China Committee (2012-2014) and Asia Pacific Committee (2014-2016) and Liaison to the Shanghai Bar Association. She received the “Unsung Hero Award” from the American Bar Association, Section of International Law in 2014 and the “Extraordinary Contributions Award” from Moot Shanghai in 2015. Robin frequently presents and publishes articles on PRC law and cultural diversity.
