DESCRIPTION Discos Transgénero present a reissue of the Marnie Weber 's classic first solo LP, Songs Hurt Me , originally released in 1989. This seminal record was an important part of the Los Angeles post-punk performative art rock scene. Brooding synthesizers, heavy bass, strange melodies, and poetic lyrics lead you through an industrial journey. These songs were born from Weber's earliest performance art characters: a deer, an old woman, a manic courtesan, and a butterfly. Songs Hurt Me was originally co-produced by Phillip Drucker , AKA Jackson Del Ray of Savage Republic and 17 Pygmies fame. Marnie is a pioneer in art rock from the '80s in Los Angeles. She emerged early in the music scene as the bass player in the Party Boys , a formative and important Los Angeles post-punk downtown art scene band. During this period, the Party Boys performed shows with Minutemen , Savage Republic , The Red Hot Chili Peppers , Fourwaycross , The Blue Daisies , Perry Farrell 's first band Psi Com , Camper Van Beethoven, and many more. Bruce Licher of Independent Project Records, whom Marnie met in art school, released the first Party Boys record. After performing with the Party Boys, Marnie went on to become a noted solo performative art musician in her own right. She has released five solo records MARNIE and numerous group album releases. As a visual artist Marnie created the cover of Sonic Youth 's A Thousand Leaves album -- interesting to note Marnie is the Songs Hurt Me hamster girl on the cover. She also designed posters for Sonic Youth and did a co- release of her second album with Thurston Moore on his label Ecstatic Peace. Sonic Youth was an American alternative rock band from New York City, formed in 1981. Their lineup largely consisted of Thurston Moore (guitar and vocals), Kim Gordon (bass guitar, vocals, and guitar), Lee Ranaldo (guitar and vocals), Steve Shelley (drums). A Profile of Marnie Weber by Ariane Fairlie “When your subconscious is creating dreams it creates images & juxtaposes them.” Marnie Weber is a modern-day witch o f Los Angeles. Her diverse artistic practice spans mu- sic, video, performance, costume design, and, of course, collage. Weber’s engagement with collage coincided with her career in the alternative rock scene, performing with The Party Boys and Perfect Me in the 80’s and afterwards making two solo albums: Woman with Bass (1994) and Cry for Happy (1996). She began her collage practice by creating a limited edition of 100 handmade collages, distributed on one side of her LP album covers. She says the experience was like a boot camp to understand collage. Since then, she has created album covers and promotional posters for many musical acts, most notably the cover for Sonic Youth’s A Thousand Leaves.

Thurston Moore and Jarvis Cocker kick off a season of art, poetry and music celebrating Adrian Henri Exhibition: City Poems and City Music 11 April – 16 June 2019, Gallery 2, Free Entry Live Event: City Poems and City Music: Live, Part One 11 April 2019, Tickets from £20 / £15 Concessions DJ sets and readings from music legends Jarvis Cocker and Thurston Moore kick off a season of art, poetry and music celebrating bestselling poet and pioneering performer, artist and musician Adrian Henri (1932 – 2000, UK). Paintings, posters, ephemera and audio-visual material from Henri’s archives are presented in an exhibition focusing on his vital role in connecting 1960s countercultural art, poetry and music scenes and his approach to the urban environment. Drawing inspiration from Henri’s interdisciplinary spirit, three evenings of experimental performance by leading international poets, artists and musicians accompany the show. Featuring live music from London-based black feminist punk-trio Big Joanie; readings by American poet CAConrad and British poet Sophie Robinson; and a presentation of Henri’s music and poems by Jarvis Cocker and Thurston Moore, City Poems and City Music Live: Part One offers reflections on urban experiences for a night of performance and collaboration. Musicians Ted Milton and Ian Svenonius, and poets Libby Houston and Anne Waldman will feature in two later live events, all specially curated for Whitechapel Gallery by arts publisher Eva Prinz, musician Thurston Moore and curator Catherine Marcangeli. Adrian Henri came to prominence in 1967 as co-author of best-selling Penguin anthology The Mersey Sound, which established poetry as part of popular youth culture.
