Welcome to the 2016 Colorado Bandmasters Association Summer Convention! Thank you for participating in this years Summer Convention. I’m very excited to focus on the theme “We’re All In This Together” as we really begin to explore mentorships and our new pre-service focus in CBA. I hope you will agree that thanks to our members and guests, we have a fantastic summer convention planned. My hope is that at all times there is a session that you will find beneficial to you and your specific situation, and you walk away with renewed friendships and some great ideas to help make this coming year one of your best! Alex Kaminsky and Shirely Dorritie are our featured guest clinicians and I know they are looking forward to spending time with you and sharing their expertise. In addition to our out of state guests, I am so grateful for our in-state colleagues who were more than willing to pitch in to help make this an amazing event. Please let them all know how much you appreciate their extra time and efforts. The Exhibitors are looking forward to having a chance to talk with you during the convention. They are here to support you and CBA. Stop by and say hello, I know they will appreciate it. Most of the exhibitors will be here for the duration of the convention, until 3pm on Friday. This year, there will be a cash drawing at the end of the convention for directors who manage to visit with every exhibitor during the convention. Two directors names will be drawn to win $50 at the end of the convention, of course, you will have to be present to win. As I begin my term as President, I want to take this opportunity to thank the members of the board who will be transitioning to other roles, or stepping down from the board. To Steve Martin, I can’t begin to thank you for all that you have done for the organization, as well as helping me to get the conventions going. Making Bands Great Again: Observations/recommendations from your rehearsals in around the State of Colorado! This session was designed from my personal observations this past year in rehearsals with many of you, or from Casey Cropp adjudicating at festivals. It is intended to be a conversation starter! Suggestions will be made that might be useful in your classroom to help with this year's CBA convention theme: “We Are All In This Together.”

Creating the Beginning Band Experience: Beginning with the End In Mind will be an in-depth look at the beginning Tom Chapman band classroom. Mr. Chapman and Mr. Margrave both have extensive experience teaching beginning band, and know and how important starting students is to building successful programs at the upper levels. This year's clinic will focus on nuts and bolts - from individual instrument concerns to creating habits of a complete musician. Look for a sequel Brian Margrave focusing on the bigger picture - coming to a conference near you in 2017.

Google Apps: Google Classroom is a powerful teaching tool that can help you focus more class time on rehearsing, and reduce stress! In this session, participants will create a Google Classroom for one of their classes and learn how to integrate functionality of Classroom with Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Forms. Through this resource, sharing and collecting documents, reference recordings, part assignments, written assignments, playing tests, written assessments, and announcements becomes simple, intuitive, and reliable. Chromebooks will be provided, but bring your Michael Vallez own laptop in case! Engaging Music Technology in the Band Classroom: Looking to integrate technology in a fun and immersive way into your classroom? In this session, participants will encounter a variety of free and low-cost apps that are easy to implement that can make extra-musical learning more engaging for student learners, while reducing teacher administrative tasks such as grading, organizing, collecting, etc. With Plickers, Kahoot, and other apps, you can excite your classroom and increase student outcomes without "breaking the bank!"

Mentor Connections: This session is for any college students, 1st year teachers, teachers new to the state, or for anyone who would like to have a mentor connection throughout the convention and possibly beyond. This is an opportunity for Clay Stansberry veteran teachers to share knowledge with teachers who are new to their jobs or college students needing guidance. During this session, we will discuss how the relationship between a veteran teacher and mentor might look. We will also pair mentor-ees with veteran teachers who are willing to guide those that would like help through the convention.

How Can I Get My Band To Sound Like That? (Part 1): At some point in their careers, band directors have heard a band and asked the question, “How can I get my band to sound like that?” Alex Kaminsky has asked that question Alex Kaminsky several times throughout his 27-year career and has worked to develop a specific pedagogical approach that yields optimum sonority from the ensemble. Kaminsky will work with a lab band formed by all directors who bring their instruments, utilizing the Yamaha Harmony Director, to demonstrate his teaching methods and pedagogy.

Teaching Strings for the Non-String Player: Dr. Spieker gives practical and clear ideas to equip the non-string player Matt Spieker with strategies to better instruct their string orchestras. The two overarching topics covered are tone production and intonation, which are the two main complaints about string classes.

Once again, we will have representatives from Make Music here to show us what’s new in Smartmusic and provide some Make Music information on how you can effectively incorporate it in your classes.

Round Table Discussions: Pete will be hosting 5 different round table topics. Nothing better represents the “We’re All Peter Toews In This Together” attitude quite like round table discussions. 4 of the tables will rotate ever 15 minutes and 1 table (marching) will rotate every 30 minutes.

New Music for Concert Band: Doc Singleton has spent over 40 hours combing through all the new releases of music, and has picked a great set of tunes that you should hear. He’s ready to present nine tunes in the grades 1-2 range ten in grade 3 and six in grades 4 and 5. Dr. Ken Singleton "After the audition I burned my music" - Tips from members of the Colorado All-State Bands on preparing a successful audition. How important are private lessons and the Band Director's involvement? An analysis of the data gathered from the student surveys at the 1998 and 2015 All-State Bands.

Incorporating Composition in your Performance Based Classroom: This clinic will cover how to get the ball rolling Andrea using composition in the classroom. Whether you are teaching with a big staff, or you are the lone music educator, this Hollenbeck session will provide techniques in order to teach music education through composition while maintaining a high standard in performance.

Thanks to the “Teaching Music through Performance in Band”, it’s getting easier and easier to ind great music for Directors Reading bands at all levels – especially because of the quality recordings that let you hear the works. But what happens when you want to branch out to ind songs not in the series? This year, we have taken the Texas UIL concert band list and Band removed all the pieces that are in Teaching Music. From there, we’ve narrowed the list down to about 4 fantastic pieces in grades 1, 2, 2+, 3, 3+ and 4. We’ll read as many as we can it in. Be sure to bring your instruments!

How Can We Continue to Impact CBA?: Our retired members are an often un-tapped resource we have in CBA. Come join Joe and Joe Brice brainstorm some ways that we can continue to learn from these great mentors and discuss some of the areas we can use your support.

Preparing Your Performers To Deliver The Goods When The Pressure is On: Performance is an emotional roller-coaster that can dramatically impact your student’s ability to deliver their skills under performance conditions. Learn how to set them up for success! THE TOP 10 OBSTACLES TO DELIVERING THE GOODS MAKING THE MOST OF THE KINDS OF MEMORY USED IN PERFORMANCE 8 ESSENTIAL SKILLS FOR PERFORMING AT THE TOP OF YOUR GAME WHEN THE PRESSURE IS ON Demystifying the Judging Process: Get the most from the competitive experience by fulling understanding the role of the judge, what Shirley Dorritie you can expect from judge commentary, and how to make best use of it! THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JUDGE AND CONSULTANT THE “PRIME DIRECTIVE” TO JUDGES THE JUDGE’S 4 MAIN TOOLS THE 3 BASIC PROCESSES INVOLVED IN JUDGING THE REAL PURPOSE OF JUDGE COMMENTARY AND HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT

Basic Considerations for Orchestral Literature: Dr. Spieker gives ideas to help any music educator as they consider literature for Matt Spieker their string ensembles. Topics covered are resources, grade level descriptions, curriculum progression, general challenges with instrument groups, time proven works, and current composers/arrangers.

Rewriting Music for Instrumentation Problems: Some instrumentation issues are not fixable right now - we can't clone horns, no one Kevin Whitelaw will switch to bassoon, or my only tuba player broke his arm and Region Festival is next week. This session will explore some issues with less-than-perfect instrumentation and smaller bands and some ways to help fill in the holes.

How Can I Get My Band To Sound Like That? (Part 2): At some point in their careers, band directors have heard a band and asked the question, “How can I get my band to sound like that?” Alex Kaminsky has asked that question several times throughout his 27-year Alex Kaminsky career and has worked to develop a specific pedagogical approach that yields optimum sonority from the ensemble. Kaminsky will work with a lab band formed by all directors who bring their instruments, utilizing the Yamaha Harmony Director, to demonstrate his teaching methods and pedagogy.

Kirk Vogel and If I Only Knew… Lessons Learned Along the Way: This session will discuss strategies that can help make your first years (or your continuing years) as a teacher more successful. Andrew, from the "new in the business" perspective and Kirk, from the "experienced" Andrew Holcombe perspective discussing "What I wish I would have known" and "What I figured out eventually but would have enjoyed knowing earlier."

Your Beginning Students on Clarinet: As young clarinetists begin on the clarinet and continue to develop, there must always a balance between encouraging the great aspects of their playing and addressing bad habits that they will inevitable develop. This session will cover the many aspects of beginning a student on the clarinet and include a focus on visual and aural cues to help diagnose common problems. Basic fundamentals of technique, tone production and articulation will be addressed, as well as effective strategies to teach these concepts to beginning and intermediate students. Additionally, equipment options and recommendations will be provided. Dr. Wesley Improving Breath Support through Visually & Aurally with Air Revelation: Through the use of external breathing devises and Ferraira exercises, teachers and students alike learn to develop proper inhalation and exhalation, in a manner that is accomplished visually and aurally. These fundamental exercises prove to benefit wind instrumentalists and vocalists of all ages. Dr. Ferreira has developed the Air Revelation - Breath Support Training Program with over 25 different exercises that both builds technique and addresses various issues that often impede a student's ability to play their wind instrument with consistent air support, and at all dynamic levels. The techniques and exercises promote relaxation in the body when performing and can be applied to all wind instrumentalists and can be used in the classroom as well as in one-on-one settings.

Travis Keller Strategies, Music Selection and Curriculum for High School Jazz Band: All around tips for a successful Jazz Program.

Kim Wilson-Paugh CYA2 - Capturing Your Administrations’ Attention: and maximizing student achievement.
