As I write, I have just returned from a much-delayed work trip to Switzerland. Finally, I had to stop waiting for circumstances to improve and just ‘bite the bullet’ and travel – driving both ways to avoid anything but the most minimal contact with the ‘outside world’ (and because I had so much I needed to take out there with me!). On my arrival, I had to spend the first 10 days confined to the apartment in quarantine – relying on a friend from the church in Wengen to bring me such essentials as bread and milk and other fresh items that I hadn’t been able to stock up with. The beautiful view from the apartment, and the amount of work I had to do within it, were some consolation, but going up and down the stairs in the apartment block for exercise was not quite the same as walking the alpine paths outside. Only on the last three days of my time in Wengen was I actually able to go outside, and work requirements left me just one afternoon for a good walk in the cool, fresh air – with the chance to make a little friend on the way ! Then travel across to Zermatt – an ‘interesting’ experience by car (Has anyone ever used the ‘Car Transporter’ train through the Lötschberg Tunnel? Talk about ‘white-knuckle rides’ – I was gripping the handbrake throughout!) A couple of days working there, with a few major frustrations and only minor achievement – plus one glimpse of the Matterhorn from the village – and it was time to head for home. The hoped for week in the ‘safe’ country of Germany had to be cancelled due to changing Coronavirus regulations there about entry from Switzerland, and so here I am again – back in Leek Wootton, but ‘confined to barracks’ for another 14 days and even ‘quarantined’ from my wife. So, when I get let out on Saturday, 7 November I will have been in quarantine for 24 out of 32 days. At least it won’t have been quite like the origin of the word which meant 40 days but it’s going to seem a very long time – although I totally understand and accept the reasoning behind it. I planned my timing to be free for Remembrance Sunday so I look forward to being with many of you (socially distanced of course) at the Recreation Ground on Sunday, 8 November at 10:45am. Maybe this time of remembrance of all the suffering and hardship that the wartime generations faced for years will help us all put our current deprivations and fears into a different context. Yours in quarantine, Jim Perryman 3 LEEK WOOTTON LINK | NOVEMBER 2020 www.leekwoottonchurch.co.uk ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH CHURCH SERVICES / EVENTS FOR NOVEMBER November is the month of Remembrance, from the festivals of All Saints and All Souls, through Remembrance Sunday and then on to Remembering the truths about Jesus, that he is Christ the King, that his kingdom will indeed come ‘on earth as it is in Heaven’, and the month concludes with Advent Sunday when we remember that the story isn’t over yet – that he will come again as King to usher in the last days. Normally quite an action-packed month, but this year, of course, looking very different – though everything will still be there! Sunday services in November will be as follows: {YT} after the time means it will be livestreamed on YouTube. These services will be available to watch later ONLY on the church website. All are invited to join on YouTube, but if you would like to attend the church, please contact Jim Perryman (phone or email) by Friday, 30 October at the latest to see whether there is space. Anyone turning up unexpectedly will only be able to attend if there is socially distanced space available. Sunday 8 REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY NO SERVICE IN CHURCH OR ONLINE 10:45am Remembrance Sunday service at Leek Wootton War Memorial Recreation Ground Care will be taken to ensure that the event is run safely and in accordance with relevant regulations. Please ensure that you fully and willingly comply with all directives on the day. The service will include all the traditional elements of the 11:00am Act of Remembrance, and will incorporate some features of the normal service in Church – notably the reading of the names of those of the village who lost their lives in WW1 and WW2.     Warwick District Personal Details: Name: Charles BOURNE E-mail: Postcode: Organisation Name: Comment text: I am very pleased to see that the Boundary Commission has decided to proceed with its own proposals, rather than adopting any of those put forward by Warwick District Council or any of the political parties (although some of these were more reasonable than others!). I totally support the objective of the Boundary Commission of creating wards with the least variation from the population average, and aligning wards as far as possible with the County Council divisions adopted following their most recent revision. However, I wish particularly to express my SUPPORT for two aspects of the Boundary Commission's proposals, both of which "correct" very unfortunate aspects of the County Council boundaries: (1) To include the area between the railway line and the River Leam in Clarendon Ward rather than Brunswick. I live in this area and can categorically confirm that the community on and around Avenue Road/Adelaide Road identify with and consider ourselves part of Leamington Spa town centre and North Leamington (Clarendon Ward or Milverton Ward), and not South Leamington (Brunswick). I am very grateful that members of the Commission took the trouble to visit this area, and affirm their view that hard geographical features separate our area from Brunswick ward. (2) To broaden Milverton Ward across Kenilworth Road so that the ward is coherent, compact and geographically rational. I hope that whatever changes the Boundary Commission might make to these proposals as a result of this consultation, they will not make any alteration to these two elements.

    Page 1 of 4 Agenda Item 1 Portfolio Holder Decision – Submission of a Bid Application to the DfT Rural Mobility Fund Portfolio Holder Portfolio Holder for Transport and Planning Date of decision 19 February 2021 Signed Decision taken That the Portfolio Holder for Transport & Planning gives approval for officers to submit a bid application for external funding to the Department for Transport’s Rural Mobility Fund for the sum of £1.020million. Reasons for decisions The submission of bids for external funding must be signed off by the relevant WCC Cabinet Portfolio Holder. Background information In September 2019, the Government announced details regarding a £220million programme of commitments in 2020-21 towards transforming bus services in England, including a National Bus Strategy. Subsequently, in February 2020, the Department for Transport (DfT) invited local authorities to submit Expressions of Interest (EOI) regarding a £20million Rural Mobility Fund to assess the benefits of on-demand services to improve existing bus provision in rural and suburban areas. The DfT expects much of the fund to be awarded in chunks of between £0.5-£1.5million. In June 2020, County Council officers submitted an EOI focused on a new demand responsive transport service serving residents in rural settlements situated to the west of the Warwick urban area and parts of Kenilworth. This represents a population below 10,000 residents in accordance with the DfT eligibility criteria, including Beausale, Budbrooke, Haseley, Hatton and Leek Wootton. The proposed new service would operate on Mondays to Saturdays between 0600 – 1930 and replace part of the conventional Service 16 bus service between Warwick – Kenilworth.

The September Ordinary Council Meeting will be held at Stoneleigh Village Hall on Thursday 8th September at 7.30 pm. Denis Chamberlain, Chief Executive of RASE, was due to attend the July meeting at Ashow. Unfortunately for the Parish Council, he has been called to another meeting on that day by the Prince of Wales. He has now agreed to attend the September meeting at Stoneleigh. Parish Council Vice-Chairman I wish to advise you that Councillor Gordon Gatward has been elected as Vice-Chairman for the ensuing year. It has been my privilege to add to the account by Warren Skidmore of the first 150 years of this family in Warwickshire, from its probable origins in Siddington Langley, Gloucestershire in the early 16th century (a family itself out of the ancient family at Holme Lacy, Herefordshire). He lends to the history of this family, as to others, his considerable knowledge and experience of interpreting records of the 12th-16th centuries and applying them to family history. Over many years' work he has tried, and in large succeeded, in tracking the movement of individuals before 1650 out of Herefordshire and Somerset to other parts of Britain and to the US. Warren Skidmore's work on this branch of the wider Skidmore/Scudamore family can be found on the website www.skidmorefamilyhistory.com as an occasional paper with the title The Skydmores in the Environs of Stratford-On-Avon, Warks. Much of Generations 1-5 below are based heavily on this paper. For my part, I have taken the story from the 18th into the early 20th century, with the census of 1911 as my end point. I have not included any detail beyond 1915 to preserve the privacy of living descendants.
