Mars, Incorporated Donates Nearly Half a Million Dollars to Recovery Efforts Following Severe Winter Storms Cash and in-kind donations will support people and pets in affected Mars communities McLEAN, Va. (February 26, 2021) — In response to the devasting winter storms across many communities in the U.S., Mars, Incorporated announced a donation of nearly $500,000 in cash and in-kind donations, inclusive of a $100,000 donation to American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Grant F. Reid, CEO of Mars said: “We’re grateful that our Mars Associates are safe following the recent destructive and dangerous storms. But, many of them, their families and friends have been impacted along with millions of others We’re thankful for partner organizations like the American Red Cross that are bringing additional resources and relief to communities, people and pets, and we’re proud to play a part in supporting that work.” Mars has more than 60,000 Associates in the U.S. and presence in 49 states. In addition to the $100,000 American Red Cross donation, Mars Wrigley, Mars Food, Mars Petcare and Royal Canin will make in-kind product donations to help people and pets. As an extension of Mars Petcare, the Pedigree Foundation is supporting impacted pets and animal welfare organizations with $25,000 in disaster relief grants. Mars Veterinary Health practices including Banfield Pet Hospital, BluePearl and VCA Animal Hospitals are providing a range of support in local communities across Texas. In addition, the Banfield Foundation and VCA Charities are donating medical supplies, funding veterinary relief teams and the transport of impacted pets. -

At the end of 10 days of ice storage, moisture and protein content of freshwater prawn slightly decreased from 78.34 to '77.35% and 18.46 to 17.10, respectively, while lipid and ash content slightly increased. The moisture, crude protein, lipid and ash content of one day ice stored tiger shrimp samples were 78.07, 18.06, 1.3 and 1.29% respectively. The protein composition of freshwater prawn immediately after killed were 36.51% sarcoplasmic, 44.63% myofibrillar, 8.12% stroma and 6.44% alkali soluble protein. At the end of 10 days of ice storage, sarcoplasmic and storma protein slightly decreased while there was little ot no changes observed in myofibrillar and alkali soluble protein. In case of one day ice stored tiger shrimp, the composition of protein were 35.32% sarcoplasmic, 46.29% myofibrillar, 7.86% stroma protein and 7.08% alkali soluble protein. At the end of 10 days in ice, sarcoplasmic protein decreased from 35.32% to 32.16% while there was slight change in other protein fractions. The TVB-N value of 1 day ice stored shrimp was 10.5 mg/100g of sample. -

Resource management in the Baltic Sea - a background document and a summary of findings of an international workshop Mikael Hildén, Riku Varjopuro, Heta Rousi, Milla Mäenpää Finnish Environment Institute 15.8. 2008 Abstract The management of the fishery resources of the Baltic Sea is a typical example of a socio- ecological complex in which the ecological basis for the exploitation is intimately intertwined with social and political factors. This report has explored the complex from a social science perspective by examining the nature of a set of problems and challenges, and by discussing possible solutions using the collective expertise of approximately 30 researchers and experts representing different fields. The general conclusion is that there is a need to bring in views that can change the current constellations of the management regime, which has focused on total allowable catches as the main instrument. For political, social and practical reasons the regime has not been able to bring about significant improvement in the management of the Baltic Sea resources, notably the cod stocks. Therefore one should try to explore alternatives that can bring about changes in the management regime, at the same time realizing that what is needed is a suite of measures. Honculada Primavera Aquaculture Department Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Tigbauan, Iloilo, Philippines 5021 Tel 63-33-271009 Fax 63-33-271008 Presented at the Nautilus Institute Workshop on Trade and Environment in Asia-Pacific: Prospects for Regional Cooperation 23-25 September 1994 East-West Center, Honolulu Abstract Production of farmed shrimp has grown at the phenomenal rate of 20-30% per year in the last two decades. The leading shrimp producers are in the Asia-Pacific region while the major markets are in Japan, the U.S.A. and Europe. The dramatic failures of shrimp farms in Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia and China within the last five years have raised concerns about the sustainability of shrimp aquaculture, in particular intensive farming. After a brief background on shrimp farming, this paper reviews its environmental impacts and recommends measures that can be undertaken on the farm, 1 country and regional levels to promote long-term sustainability of the industry. Among the environmental effects of shrimp culture are the loss of mangrove goods and services as a result of conversion, salinization of soil and water, discharge of effluents resulting in pollution of the pond system itself and receiving waters, and overuse or misuse of chemicals. Recommendations include the protection and restoration of mangrove habitats and wild shrimp stocks, management of pond effluents, regulation of chemical use and species introductions, and an integrated coastal area management approach.
