First planted in Australia in the early 1830s, Grenache was historically used for producing . It wasn’t until the 1980s that producers really turned their attention to making premium table wines from Grenache — often blending it with Shiraz and Mourvedre to create so-called GSMs. These blends are now an important part of the story, particularly in Barossa and McLaren Vale, where producers make use of old bush vines to create elegant, complex wines.

Up until the mid-20th Century fortified wines dominated Australian wine production and even as late as 1960, 80% of Australian wine was fortified. These days production is a fraction of what it was — but with the unique, iconic styles from Rutherglen in particular, it is no less important. This focus table offers you the opportunity to taste through the spectrum of Australian sweet and fortified wines from delicate sweet Riesling to intense, fortified Shiraz.

Quealy Winemakers’ husband and wife team Kathleen Quealy and Kevin McCarthy first arrived on the Mornington Peninsula in 1988. They have spent the subsequent years cultivating a reputation for single vineyard expressions of regional heroes Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. The family home and winery are set amongst the vines that create Pobblebonk, an Italian inspired white field blend. 17 rows of the earliest planted Pinot Noir in the region sit in wide rows further down the hill. Their dedication to organic farming underpins all viticultural decisions. The benefits of the cool maritime climate allow dry farming throughout the 60 acres of vineyard managed by the Quealy team across the Peninsula. Traditional and natural winemaking techniques are used to craft wines of character and with a sense of place. Kathleen was awarded Legend of the Vine in 2016 for the unique role she has played in shaping this young region.

As the son of Mort Mitchell, renowned as one of the Clare Valley’s most experienced and meticulous grape growers, Kevin Mitchell spent his formative years amongst vines, and it was almost inevitable he would end up working alongside his father. Kevin purchased the Kilikanoon property in 1997, Cape Mentelle Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 £55.00 including Mort’s Block, a vineyard his father had planted over 40 years ago, and has built it into an esteemed producer of wines which express the individuality of their sub-regions. Traditional winemaking techniques are employed to produce hand-crafted wines with the unequivocal essence of Kilikanoon. All Woodlands wines are made on site by the Watson family. The Woodlands vineyards of just under 30ha produce about 15k 9–l. cases enabling winemaking of the highest standards. Dry farming enhance terroir characteristics and keep alcohol levels naturally down, consequent lower yields further contribute to high quality of the wines. Watson’s Family Vineyards range of wines are slightly more fruit forward and stylistically ‘early drinking wines’ without compromising on quality or winemaking ethos. Grapes are sourced from carefully selected, undervalued vineyards south of the Woodlands estate widening the range to Shiraz and a Sauvignon–Semillon. Total production of Watson’s Family Vineyards range is 7.5K 9-l cases.
