Nghệ Thuật Ở Hoa Kỳ XÃ HỘI VÀ CÁC GIÁ TRỊ CỦA MỸ Tập 8 Tạp chí Điện tử của Bộ Ngoại giao Hoa Kỳ Số 1 Nghệ thuật ở Hoa Kỳ: Những hướng mới Xã hội và các Giá trị của Mỹ - Tháng 4/2003 1 LỜI BAN BIÊN TẬP Trong cuốn sách mới xuất bản “Những viễn cảnh của nƣớc Mỹ: Thiên anh hùng ca về lịch sử Nghệ thuật ở Mỹ”, nhà phê bình nghệ thuật sinh ở Australia Robert Hughes chỉ ra một trong những thực tiễn quan trọng của Mỹ là “một sự khởi đầu lại, từ bỏ bản sắc trong quá khứ”. Đối với Hughes điều này không có nghĩa là rũ bỏ sạch trơn mà là sự giao thoa phức tạp với truyền thống cũ. Hughes viết pha chút hài hƣớc “luôn có một hình ảnh bị chôn vùi nho nhỏ về một ngƣời di cƣ xuống thuyền với hành lý của mình gồm đôi ủng, một cuốn Kinh thánh hay 27 Rembrandt”. Kiểu bắt đầu lại từ đầu này là chuyện thƣờng nhật của các nghệ sỹ trong sáng tác nghệ thuật. Khởi đầu từ con số không cũng là suy nghĩ của các nhà biên tập khi chúng tôi phỏng vấn một số chuyên gia hàng đầu ở Mỹ trong các loại hình nghệ thuật khác nhau về thực tế lĩnh vực của mình. Ví dụ, có gì mới trong múa hay nghệ thuật tạo hình? Ai là nghệ sỹ nổi bật nhất trong ngành sân khấu và âm nhạc? Những xu hƣớng hiện nay trong điện ảnh và văn học ăn nhập như thế nào với truyền thống lịch sử? Vì bất kỳ sự khái quát hóa nào về nghệ thuật đều đáng hoài nghi trong một đất nƣớc có khoảng 1.200 dàn nhạc giao hƣởng, 117 công ty Opera chuyên nghiệp, hơn 400 công ty múa, và 425 nhà hát chuyên nghiệp phi lợi nhuận, nên câu trả lời của các chuyên gia đối với những câu hỏi này chắc chắn sẽ không đầy đủ. Đó là lý do tại sao chúng tôi đã tập hợp một loạt quan điểm của các nhà phê bình, những ngƣời công tác trong mỗi lĩnh vực, chân dung của bản thân các nghệ sỹ. Và dĩ nhiên các chuyên gia này đôi lúc cũng bất đồng với nhau. Sự đa dạng về quan điểm dƣờng nhƣ là phù hợp trong một đất nƣớc không có bộ văn hóa, không có quan điểm chính thống về loại hình nghệ thuật xuất sắc nhất. Nhƣng tờ báo này cũng cho chúng ta thấy một số chủ đề chung. Đó là tính quốc tế hóa ngày càng tăng của nghệ thuật, đó là cách mà các loại hình nghệ thuật Mỹ thƣờng xuyên đƣợc làm giàu thêm do sự giao lƣu nghệ sỹ và ý tƣởng vƣợt qua biên giới và ngƣợc lại. Đó còn là điều mà một nhà phê bình gọi là “sự xâm nhập lẫn nhau”, tức là biên giới giữa các loại hình nghệ thuật đang bị xóa mờ và nhiều nghệ sỹ hoạt động trong các lĩnh vực nghệ thuật khác nhau. Các điệu múa của Mark Morris hay Bill T. Jones đôi khi kết hợp cả ngôn ngữ nói; nghệ sỹ tạo hình Matthew Barney sáng tác những bộ phim sử thi mang dáng dấp của những bộ phim Hollywood. Một xu hƣớng quan trọng khác trong sáng tác tác phẩm mới hiện nay là sự giao thoa phức tạp giữa những trung tâm sáng tạo truyền thống ở các vùng duyên hải của Mỹ và những khu vực ít dân cƣ hơn. Trong bài viết tổng hợp của mình, nhà phê bình Terry Teachout lập luận rằng một số vở mới hay nhất của Nhà hát Thành phố New York có xuất xứ từ Nhà hát Glimmerglass, một công ty nhỏ ở một thị trấn nhỏ bang New York. Vậy đâu là gốc rễ của trào lƣu sáng tạo hiện nay mà tờ báo này đang bàn đến? Trong cuộc phỏng vấn mở đầu của chúng tôi, Dana Gioia, nhà thơ và là chủ tịch của Quỹ Quốc gia vì Nghệ thuật, đã chỉ ra một nguồn chắc chắn: “Lý do vì sao Mỹ có một lịch sử nghệ thuật tiêu biểu đa dạng nhƣ thế, với một bề dày thành tích chƣa từng có nhƣ thế từ điện ảnh đến chủ nghĩa biểu trƣng trừu tƣợng đến nhạc Jazz đến văn học hiện đại là vì Mỹ đã và đang là một xã hội thừa nhận tự do cá nhân của nhân dân mình”.
