JEAN SHAFIROFF… LEADING THE WAY IN PHILANTHROPY JULY/AUGUST 2020 • MIAMI ® • LA editor’s take Joan Jedell appears on national and local TV. July/August 2020 You can also get the scoop from Joan Jedell’s Red Carpet Scoop on 1010WINS.

Joan Jedell Pandemic Dreams founder, publisher, editor-in-chief, hose pesky pandemic dreams. Waking up in a panic in the middle of the night. The distressing dreams about photographer, creative director masks and natural disasters. The anxiety. T The term “nightmare” was actually first coined in the late 1700s as a “disease when a man in his sleep supposes he has a great weight laying upon him.” Between COVID-19, the potential of a second great depression, as- teroids just missing the earth (yes, it actually happened in June), 2020 has been one “great weight” laying on all of us. I had one of those pandemic dreams—or should I say nightmares? It started off sweetly enough, complete with Karen Ann Love the soundtrack from the PBS and HBO children’s staple, Sesame Street (which coincidentally just aired its Season 50 finale a few weeks ago). editor-at-large Sunny day Sweeping the clouds away

Kimberly Neumann Can you tell me how to get copy editor How to get to Sesame Street H But it wasn’t Sesame Street I was looking for—I was trying to get to my doctor’s office on East 62nd Street. Just down the block from Nello and Amaranth. In my panic of experiencing this newly discovered COVID-like symptom—loss of smell—I cannot remember which way I have to walk. I also realize that confusion is yet another SEmily Jedell COVID symptom. So, I try to ask my fellow masked-Gothamites on the street for help, but when I approach them they keep walking backwards to maintain their 6-feet of social distance. Everything is not a-okay!” But no one hears me through my Louis Vuitton mask. Kimberly Neumann Despondent, I realize I will never find my doctor’s office. But then I look up and see this tall creature coming George Wayne towards me. I think, “Finally, someone’s going to help me!” Because I’m facing the sun, I can only see a silhouette of someone riding a bicycle, going the wrong way in the bike lane—a lane that is wider than the portion of the street contributors reserved for cars. I think, “It has to be Big Bird. But as the cyclist gets closer, I realize, “It is Big Bird!—The man formerly known as Warren Wilhelm Jr— Bill de Blasio”—(a.k.a. Mayor de Blah Blah). He’s still wearing a button from his campaign for his laughable (and failed) Democratic presidential candidate bid. I reach out my hand to him and yell, “De Blah Blah—please help me.” But he Cover photo by Michael Paniccia just rides by and laughs. Maybe it’s because I didn’t vote for him. So I sit there, alone, as Blah Blah rides off into the sunset on his way back to Sesame Street. “Good riddance,” I say. “Finally!”

Society Dreams THE MORGAN LIBRARY By Lauren Lawrence & MUSEUM BENEFIT THE PARK AVENUE ARMORY GALA: ARMORY IRIDESCENT

● EMILIA FANJUL Jamie Carol Jamee and Amy Rose Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos, “In a recurring dream I go back to the Dimon, Mack, Peter Silverman, Debbie Peltz The Dream Elizabeth Colin Gregory Elihu Rose house in Havana where I grew up. I’m knocking on Miller Bailey the door but I cannot go in. Sometimes I’m in the house up in the nursery rooms wandering around in that area and it is bittersweet.”

The Interpretation Knocking on a door is confrontational in nature—it involves a fist. It shows opposition. It is a declarative statement wishing to be heard, and responded to. The door that remains shut represents something the dreamer is barred from—perhaps a large part of her childhood. Her family house was confiscated Lauren long ago by Castro’s government and turned into Lawrence an embassy. Although there is the desire to gain perspective on the past, to redo and reclaim what Madison Wendy Pap Steinberg, time has taken away, the quest for recollection is fraught with impediments. It is as Wendy Thomas Wolfe said: “You can’t go home again.” Belzberg In another view, houses are representations of the self. As such, entering houses re- veals the desire for personal inquiry—an internal perspective, if you will. Wandering Katherine Rayner, Fabrizia Pignatelli Colin Bailey Fianna, Stephen around in the nursery expresses nostalgia for the past but also a certain vulnerability. Fianna There is the wish to be nursed and nurtured again.

● ● ● Chuck ● and Stacy CHRIS CUOMO Rosenzweig The Dream “I’m on a motorcycle going around a curve. I swerve to avoid hitting a truck and I crash off the road onto the grass. When I get up to see what has happened, I see another mo- torcycle coming into the same situation. I try to run up there to tell the guy, to warn him, but I can’t run fast because my clothing is heavy. Instead, he runs off the road and smacks into me knocking me back up on the motorcycle onto the road again. I look back to see what happened to that guy, to see how I got into the jam, and I see the same series of events that made me crash in the first place.”

The Interpretation Road dreams generally represent freedom of self-expression. As such, the mode of transport often defines the individual on his journey of exploration. Adam and Caroline Parker Alexandra and Philip Howard The masculine, testosterone-rich symbol of the motorcycle reveals a powerful, force- ful, revved up persona, full of drive. When thrown a curve, the dreamer knows how to swerve from the obstacles life puts in his path. Even when he crashes, he gets up again to see what happened. The other driver is self-referential. The second crash is needed to make a lasting impression: The dreamer must learn how to deal with the consequences of his actions. In a “Groundhog Day” scenario, there is the need to redo, for if we do not learn from the past, we will repeat our mistakes ad infinitum. Tracey Gerber, Deborah Walker, ● ● ● Patty Grunebaum Yaz Christine Mack Hernandez ● PETER BEARD in homage Cristina Von Bargen, Laura Parker, Heidi McWilliams, The Dream “I have this recurring dream where I am high diving off a cliff—so much higher Barbara Tober Marieke Peters, Amy Brown than any cliff imaginable. I am scared. I have this falling sensation. It never resolves itself.”

Cybele The Interpretation Falling is a liberating sensation concerned with letting go; it shakes Raver, free from guardedness, and from the fetters of a pre-conditioned future. In that falling Clancy symbolizes loosening one’s grasp, control is not an issue. Without support or physical Blair attachment, Beard’s wish is for detachment and independence. No longer on familiar Chelsea and ground, the dreamer is out of his element, or is he? The wish to plummet the depths Scott of existence where nothing is accountable may be just the thing. There is a movement Clifford away from the concrete stabilities of life toward the abstract uncertainties—a leap of faith into the airy hands of the intangible—into a Yeatsian widening gyre, if you will, Dr. Rosemarie where the center will not hold. All for the better, as falling dreams establish trust in the Ingleton self and in survival, as one never hits bottom. In initiating his downward spiral, the dreamer surrenders to impulses regardless of consequences. Neither suicidal nor escapist, diving from the heights indicates the humility of the dreamer who is uncomfortable on top. In another view, the dream may reflect something that was given up in life—something the dreamer let fall by the wayside.
