5 Synopsis Enacting Black Suffering and Laughter: Creative Restorations of Black Experiences in Suzan-Lori Parks’s Plays Rie Anada Suzan-Lori Parks dramatizes the individual voices of African Americans, which have been disregarded, abandoned , and buried underground. The purpose of this study is to examine the contradict ory phases of the world Parks exposes, which we cannot face squarely without the framework of a play. For that purpose, I explore her method of adopting black experiences into plays and clarify a distinguishing trait of her style. Her plays depict historical events and the phase of the present world at the same time. Namely, they are at the intersection of time and place. Her writings are considered products of postmodernism applied to African American experiences. But that expression alone is not sufficient reason for the uniqueness of her works. An architectural way of writing plays that adopts caustic humor is the essence of her dramatic composition. Her plays are characteristic owing to her attempt to combine a mixture of academic works, historical events, and the African American predicament with sarcastic humor. She also uses the African American vernacular “sygnifyin” in a script and in the whole construction of plays creatively. I will call her attempt to collect black experiences and put them into plays “creative restorations of black experiences.” Chapter 1 focuses on the way African Americans were prevented from growing their self-conscious in her early major plays in the first place. Imperceptible Mutabilities in the Third Kingdom is an omnibus-style play consisting of four different sections. Each section is 1 not continuous in time and place, but the resonances of voices coming from each section overlap. Parks accumulates the voices of African Americans who can neither go back to their homeland nor become members of their new land, namely, historical nomads. The structure of The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World is modeled after the style of the Stations of the Cross. The play does not mark a single man’s death, but it connotes multiple kinds of African American deaths that are to be lamented. In the course of the play, audiences are present for the moment of the resurrection of the “Last Blackman.” The America Play exemplifies Parks’s strategy to make history into a form of hyperreality. The main character is a gravedigger who bears a strong resemblance to Abraham Lincoln. He left home to head west and make an “exact replica of the Great Hole of History.” Disneyfication of history is applied to the great man’s symbolism. And she also makes use of the Disneyfication of history in the theme park to represent a nation in which “the real is no longer real.” Parks’s strategy to make history in theater is to apply Disneyfication of history on the one hand and to attempt the creative destruction of the application on the other. Eventually, the figures in her plays show self-consciousness instead of being stereotyped. Chapter 2 deals with the plays that bring black women center stage: Venus and Red Letter Plays. Following early experimental plays that show black experiences in fragments, Parks set about the task of giving narratives to dismembered or disregarded black women’s mind s through drama. Venus is a play about a real historical South African woman who was sent to Europe and displayed as “Venus Hottentot” in the early 19 th century. Parks’s efforts to dramatize her were criticized as re-objectification and re-commodification, but it must have been an attempt to summon her from a storage area named “history,” and furthermore to demystify this Khoisan woman who was set up as an 2 ideological icon by South African people. In the Blood and Fucking A, together with The Red Letter Plays, contain narratives of mothers who kill their own children. However, the stories do not center on the resurrection of the dead but on the living hell African American women go through. I discuss the whole system of hierarchical society that functions to marginalize African American women that is explored in The Red Letter Plays and the dramaturgy Parks adopts to get to the heart of the matter. Chapter 3 discusses African-American families and takes a close look at their historical aspects. First, I attempt to clarify African-American family values and the crisis created by the buildup of dissatisfaction in an unstable family relationship in Topdog/Underdog. Next, I look over Parks’s newest play, Father Comes Home from the Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3).

THE GLOBALIZATION OF K-POP: THE INTERPLAY OF EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL FORCES Master Thesis presented by Hiu Yan Kong Furtwangen University MBA WS14/16 Matriculation Number 249536 May, 2016 Sworn Statement I hereby solemnly declare on my oath that the work presented has been carried out by me alone without any form of illicit assistance. All sources used have been fully quoted. (Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological.

Our gold price target of > USD 1,800 for January 2021 for this scenario is within reach. • The coronavirus is the accelerant of the overdue recession The debt-driven expansion in the US has been cooling off since the end of 2018. Measured in gold, the US equity market reached its peak more than 18 months ago. The coronavirus and the reactions to it act as a massive accelerant. • Debt-bearing capacity is reaching its limits The interventions resulting from the pandemic risk are overstretching the debt sustainability of many countries. Government bonds will increasingly be called into question as a safe haven. Gold could take on this role. • Central banks are in a quandary when it comes to combating inflation in the future Due to overindebtedness, it will not be possible to combat nascent inflation risks with substantial interest rate increases. In the medium-term inflationary environment, silver and mining stocks will also be successful alongside gold.

  • " Gnostics " That the Greek Language Has
THE SEVEN THUNDERS. § XXIII. THE UPANISHADS IN GNOSTIC LITERATURE. We are reminded in King's "Gnostics " that the Greek language has but one word for vowel and voice ; and this has led the uninitiated to many erroneous interpretations. On the simple knowledge, how ever, of that well-known fact a comparison may be attempted, and a flood of light thrown upon several mystic meanings. Thus the words, so often used in the Upanishads and the Puranas, " Sound " and "Speech," may be collated with the Gnostic "Vowels " and the " Voices " of the Thunders and Angels in " Revelation." The same will be found in Pistis Sophia, and other ancient Fragments and MSS. This was remarked even by the matter-of-fact author of "The Gnostics and their Remains." Through Hippolytus, an early Church Father, we learn what Marcus -a Pythagorean rather than a Christian Gnostic, and a Kabalist most certainly-had received in mystic revelation. It is said that "Marcus had it revealed unto him that ' the seven heavens ' ':' ....sounded each one vowel, which, all combined together, formed a complete doxology " ; in clearer words : "the Sotmd whereof being carried down (from these seven heavens) to earth, became the creator and parent of all things that be on earth." (See "Hippolytus," vi., 48, and King's Gnostics, p. 200. ) Translated from the Occult phraseology into still plainer language this would read : "The Sevenfold Locos having differentiated into seven Logoi, or creative potencies (vowels) these (the second logos, or "Sound " ) created all on Earth. Assuredly one who is acquainted with Gnostic literature can hardly help seeing in St.

Jeremy Chang-ling Hsu Modular Geometric Organism: The Amoebic Movement in K-Pop Performance Abstract In this article I consider K-Pop music videos a newly contagious amoeba to explore how K-Pop performance moves us and how its amoebic body moves in and out of the screen. Using research drawn from Posthumanism, I argue that technics opens up the border of human body through programmability, promoting the cyborgian assemblage that suggests the mobility of technics and the technicity of human bodies. In particular, I focus on the choreography of K-Pop, which I argue is a modular geometric organism that consists of human prosthesis and shares the same quality of the amoebic movement, in order to suggest that this contagious media is able to extend its pseudopods to engulf viewers while listening, watching, and recreating the performance. Due to the immersiveness of K-Pop performance videos, their amoebic movement is perceived more easily, and reshapes the relationship between the viewers and the videos, creating a new organism in their digital circulation.
