Straubhaar The format program trade has grown rapidly in the past decade and has become an important part of the global television market. This study aimed to give an understanding of this phenomenon by examining how global formats enter and become incorporated into the national media market through a case study analysis on the Korean format market. Analyses were done to see how the historical background influenced the imported format flows, how the format flows changed after the media liberalization period, and how the format uses changed from illegal copying to partial formats to whole licensed formats. Overall, the results of this study suggest that the global format program flows are different from the whole ‘canned’ program flows because of the adaptation processes, which is a form of hybridity, the formats go through.

  • Creative Reflections of Pasifika Ethnic Mixedness
‘The Bitter Sweetness of the Space Between’: Creative Reflections of Pasifika Ethnic Mixedness By Emily Fatu A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Pacific Studies Pacific Studies, Va‘aomanū Pasifika Victoria University 2016 Abstract This Master of Arts thesis investigates and draws conclusions regarding how creative arts present accommodating spaces for articulating and understanding cultural mixedness amongst Pacific populations in New Zealand. New Zealand is home to an expanding Pacific population; statistics identify a growing number of these Pacific people who are multi-ethnic, and who are claiming their mixedness in official census data. As Pacific populations have grown, Pacific artists have risen to national prominence in visual, literary and performing arts. Many of these artists have themselves been of mixed ancestry. This thesis examines the work of three female New Zealand artists of mixed Samoan-English or Samoan- Indian descent, asking, “How do these artists and their work express their cultural mixedness?” Discussion centres on mixed media visual artist Niki Hastings-McFall, who is of English and Samoan descent; spoken word poet Grace Taylor, also of English and Samoan descent; and musical performer Aaradhna Patel, who is of Indian and Samoan descent. Placing both the creative work and public commentary of these three artists at its centre, this thesis explores how these artists publicly identify with their Samoan heritage as well as their other heritage(s); how they use their art as a platform for identity articulation; and how creative arts provide flexible and important spaces for self-expression.

  • NZ Idol: Youth Audiences and Local Meanings
NZ Idol: Youth Audiences and Local Meanings Joost de Bruin Introduction The reality television show NZ Idol has been one of the most successful locally made entertainment programmes in New Zealand over the past ten years. Three seasons were broadcast on TV2 in 2004, 2005 and 2006. According to its producer, the final episode of the first season was the mostwatched television show in New Zealand in 2004, with a staggering 1.4 million people, a third of the New Zealand population, tuning in to find out who won the first NZ Idol crown (South Pacific Pictures 2004). On top of impressive ratings the show also attracted considerable secondary media attention. Stories about NZ Idol and its contestants featured regularly in local media such as newspapers, popular websites, and women’s, youth and gossip magazines. NZ Idol is an adaptation of the global Idols format, which has been sold to more than 40 other territories around the world (Fremantle Media 2009). Although all adaptations are structured similarly – starting with regional auditions by a large pool of aspiring young people in front of a jury and finishing with live shows in which the remaining contestants perform on stage (Holmes 2004a: 153154) – each Idols version also incorporates typically local aspects. Existing scholarship on global formats has indicated that in the process of adaptation, local stories, events and characters can be included in the narrative (Moran 1998; Waisbord 2004). In the case of NZ Idol this has resulted in, among other aspects, a unique mix of contestants from Pacific Island, Māori and Pākehā backgrounds, ‘going home stories’ shot in locations all over Aotearoa/New Zealand, the use of local New Zealand music, and an overall appeal to New Zealand viewers to support and vote for the contestants and buy the products associated with the show.

A MUSICOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF NATURE’S BEST A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts at The University of Waikato by NICHOLAS BRAAE The University of Waikato 2012 Abstract Academic research on New Zealand popular music has primarily been conducted from historical and cultural perspectives. While asking important questions, these sources have rarely engaged with the musical details of New Zealand popular music. This thesis is a musicological analysis of the 100 songs from the three Nature’s Best albums. The musical perspective complements the socio-cultural research on New Zealand popular music. The Nature’s Best project was instigated by Mike Chunn in 2001 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA). All songwriting members of APRA and 100 celebrities and critics were invited to vote for their ten favourite New Zealand popular songs.
