Although some of his works led to critical arguments regarding style, the peculiarities of his unorthodox use of words have been hailed in the world of contemporary literature. In this study, Nabokov’s first short story The Wood Sprite is explored from a stylistic perspective. To analyze the story, a discourse analysis method was used in regards to linguistic, semantic, and stylistic elements. The findings were then presented with the textual examples from the story. Highlighting linguistic and stylistic elements of the story, the study explores Nabokov’s peculiar way of writing as he presents the theme of immigration, which is reflective of today’s political, social and cultural context, as the story unfurls. Keywords: Nabokov, discourse, style Introduction Nabokov’s way of writing has been great attraction for readers who like to be confused and also surprised with the sudden but fine ending of the story while enjoying the flow of words in unusual combinations. Although he has been widely acclaimed for his novels, especially Lolita, he dedicated some of his early time on writing short stories. Fifty-two of his stories were published in four English collections during his lifetime. While Nabokov had a sketch of a final collection that he described as “the bottom of the barrel” (Nabokov, 1995), he did not live long enough to realize that project. His son and wife took a role in reproducing collections of his stories by regrouping the previous stories, altering their order and adding new ones that had not been previously published. The book, The Stories of Vladimir Nabokov, was published by Vintage Books in 1995. The aim of this article is to explore Nabokov’s style in the first story of the collection, The Stories of Vladimir Nabokov, entitled The Wood-Sprite. Having read all the stories in the collection, the researcher has focused on The Wood-Sprite since the connection between the text and the reader implicitly touches on today’s political and social conjunction: immigration forced by war, and the researcher lives in the immediate context where the brutal realities of forced immigration, dislocation of people due to the war can be witnessed directly through observation and media narratives of immigrants, and their stories. In addition to its relevant theme, the conspicuous stylistic features of the Nabokov’s story are the principal focus of the present paper. The main aim of the paper is to go beyond the traditional domain of sentences to explore the literary structure of the text as a whole (Fowler, 1989). 1 19th International Stylistics Symposium November 28-29, 2019 Isparta/TURKEY Editor: Dr. Mehmet Galip ZORBA ISBN: 978-605-84052-7-1 Nabokov’s style is considered an important quality of his presence in the realm of fiction. Nabokov’s creation of story spins around two focal distinctions: the personal and impersonal uses of language, and the relationship between the narrator (himself) and reader as a composition element of the story (Olson, 1983). He also juxtaposes the real and abstract establishing a duality between world and otherworld (Rudolf, 2013, p. 13). His personal and impersonal uses of language reflect a combination of short and long sentences, where each is distinguished by the adjective modifying the noun in an unusual way. Nabokov also makes use of emotive verbs while describing the immediate contexts such as nature and the character’s state of mind. Additionally, adjective phrases and the impersonal use of verbs are generally evocative and make reader feel the text through sounds, colors and feelings by making use of various sensory receptions. His use of the first-person narrator cultivates a persona for the reader where the reader displaces herself/himself with Nabokov. The characters he creates and the first-person narrator (we as readers) are in good company throughout the story. Nabokov’s first-person narrator and reader are all melded as one unique entity. This unity manifests itself in his style of writing where the reader can feel the material world, grounded by the senses, and glimpse another metaphysical world through fanciful characters.

Bunting-Hudson All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The Art of the Hustle: A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia Laura L. Bunting-Hudson How do rap artists in Bogota, Colombia come together to make music? What is the process they take to commodify their culture? Why are some rappers able to become socially mobile in this process, while others are less so? What is technology’s role in all of this? This ethnography explores those questions, as it carefully documents the strategies utilized by various rap groups in Bogota, Colombia to create social mobility, commoditize products and to create a different vision of modernity within the hip-hop community, as an alternative to the ideals set forth by mainstream Colombian society. Resistance Art Poetry (RAP), is said to have originated in the United States but has become a form of international music. In conducting ethnographic research from December of 2012 to October 2014, I was able to discover how rappers organize themselves politically, how they commoditize their products and distribute them to create various types of social mobilities. In this dissertation, I constructed models to typologize rap groups in Bogota, Colombia, which I call polities of rappers to discuss how these groups come together, take shape, make plans and execute them to reach their business goals.

He was the hermit gone wild, a lonely boy from Toronto with Michael Jackson's fragile tenor and a hard drive full of Portishead B-sides who suddenly had his pick of worldly women, but quickly became disillusioned by the paradox of choice. Tesfaye's new album, Kiss Land , is a glass-clad monolith to his jaded misogynist fantasies and melodramatic jet-setting, fascinating for both its futurist sonic template and its emotionally stunted hypersexuality. From the album's first line ("It's ideal, you need someone to tell you how to feel") to its last ("She forgot the good things about me / She let it slip away"), an overwhelming sense of hopelessness and dissociation sets in. Tesfaye's delicate voice, often breaking into a desperate whimper, constantly echoes off towering synthetic minor chords and spare, hydraulic drum patterns. He is truly lost in the machine. More than any of his contemporaries, Tesfaye personifies the anxiety, narcissism and ironic disconnect of the digital generation. His version of modern love is no fun; it's one built around blame, numbing overindulgence and cold sexual transaction.

Nothing I do re- ally can change that.” That’s NOT what that means. What it means is that God has a plan for you to accept him & be saved but he can’t force you to do so. In May of 2019, Amanda Eller went for a run in Hawaii where she lived. The plan was to just go on a 3 mile run but there were some trees on the running path. So she decided to go for a hike instead. After some time in the woods, she headed back to her car but didn’t have a true idea of which way to go. Soon, she got lost. With no phone, no water bottle, and no supplies; she was in some trouble.

    May 2021 GOSPEL COMMENTARIES 1 May [Joseph the Worker] Mt 13:54-58 Jesus came to his hometown and began to teach the people in their synagogue, so that they were astounded and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these deeds of power? Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all this?" And they took offence at him. But Jesus said to them, "Prophets are not without honour except in their own country and in their own house." And he did not do many deeds of power there, because of their unbelief. In this reading, Matthew’s gospel calls Jesus “the carpenter’s son” (verse 55), but Mark’s gospel simply calls him “the carpenter” (6:3). Mark never polishes the surface of the Gospel story, as the others do. Jesus was a carpenter, of course, as well as being the son of a carpenter. Otherwise, what was he doing for thirty years? We need to celebrate Jesus the worker as well as Joseph the worker. In the past, manual work was referred to as “servile work”. It was forbidden on Sundays. If you were an accountant you could spend all your Sundays accounting, but if you were a farmer, for example, or a carpenter, you had to remain idle. ‘Servile’ comes from the Latin ‘servilis’, meaning ‘of a slave’. ‘Servile work’ means ‘the work of slaves’.

He is risen, indeed! Alleluia! After journeying through the 40 days of Lent, a time spent in quiet prayer and reflection in the darkened winter months, we are ready to embrace the hope and promise of the new life we are promised in the Risen Christ. We are assured by Christ’s death and resurrection that nothing can vanquish God’s love, not even the sting of death. The Light of Christ has come into the world through God’s boundless grace for you and me, with the promise of new life without end. The Paschal candle, the large single candle to the left of the altar that burns during the 50 days of the Easter season, is a reminder of the Resurrection, where we are reunited with God as the Living Body of Christ. Every Sunday, we gather together to celebrate the Holy Eucharist, (eucharist is Greek for thanksgiving) as a reminder that we each have been given new life in Christ that will never end. So, there is much to celebrate and give thanks for as we shout, Alleluia, He is risen! If you are with us for the first time, please make yourself comfortable.
