    PLESSY v. FERGUSON (1896) ORIGINS OF THE CASE In 1892, Homer Plessy took a seat in the “Whites Only” car of a train and refused to move. He was arrested, tried, and convicted in the District Court of New Orleans for breaking Louisiana’s segregation law. Plessy appealed, claiming that he had been denied equal protection under the law.     Episode 113: A Place Worse Than Hell Week of December 2 – 8, 1862 http://civilwar150.longwood.edu “If there is a worse place than hell,” Lincoln told a visitor in December 1862, “I am in it.” The fall state and congressional elections had not gone well. Radical Republicans, angered that the President had remained loyal to McClellan so long, failed to campaign wholeheartedly, leaving the field to the Democrats, who accused the administration of incompetence on the battlefield and of unconstitutional abuse of its power, both in curbing dissent and in daring to speak of freeing slaves. Asked for his reaction to all this bad news, Lincoln said he felt like the boy who stubbed his toe – he was too big to cry, and it hurt too much to laugh. “The fact is that the country is done for unless something is done at once…..” said Senator Zachariah Chandler. “The President is a weak man, too weak for the occasion, and those fool or traitor generals are wasting time and yet more precious blood in indecisive battles and delays.” Rumors circulated that Lincoln would resign in favor of Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, and that McClellan would somehow be recalled to Washington to assume dictatorial power. This attack on his leadership by men of his own party at such a critical time deeply distressed Lincoln: “We are now on the brink of destruction,” he told an aide. “It appears to me that the Almighty is against us.” Generally the public press supported the President. The Washington Chronicle saw “a perfect balance of thoroughly sound faculties, great calmness of temper, firmness of purpose, supreme moral principle and intense patriotism”.

    Reputation and Reality in America’s Model Town: Remembering Racial Integration in Teaneck, New Jersey, 1949 – 1968 Rachel Mark Senior Thesis Department of History, Columbia University April 4, 2011 Acknowledgements In ‟65 tension was running high at my high school/ There was a lot of fights between the black and white/There was nothing you could do…/ Troubled times had come to my hometown/ My hometown/ My hometown/ My hometown - Bruce Springsteen, “My Hometown” This thesis investigates how integration is remembered in Teaneck, NJ, the first town in the nation to vote for integrated schools. While I observe in this thesis that the reality of integration ultimately fell short of the goals set by the activists themselves, I do not wish to take away from these individuals and their honorable actions. In a time when the country faced fierce segregation and racism, a majority in Teaneck stepped up and voted for what they believed in their hearts was right: equal education. As a third generation Teaneck resident, I feel a close connection to this story. My grandparents still vividly remember casting their votes for integration, and my mother went to the central sixth grade school created as part of the original integration plan. And at the outset, I would like to thank my parents – Joseph and Meryl Mark – and grandparents – Abraham and Sheila Schlussel, and Norman and Frances Mark – for not just providing me with a topic for my thesis but also for instilling a love of education and learning that inspired me to undertake the project in the first place.

Wilson and Party Politics, 1855-1895 LEONARD SCHLUP ONE OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS of Iowa Republican- ism, James F. Wilson (1828-1895) represented his party and his state in the United States House of Representatives from 1861 to 1869 and the United States Senate from 1882 to 1895. A number of his contemporaries have been the subjects of excellent studies, and various memoirs and autobiogra- phies have helped to illuminate certain personalities and events of the period. ^ Yet Wilson's political career has re- ceived comparatively little notice. In the accounts of his con- temporaries, he appears in scattered references to isolated fragments of his life, while the general surveys of Iowa history either ignore him or mention him only briefly.^ He deserves better treatment. This essay sketches the outlines of Wilson's political career and suggests his role as conciliator in Iowa's Republican party politics. I hope the essay will help readers see Wilson's political career in a broader perspective 1.
