Presidential Elections 1959-2013 1959 Elections The first Presidential Elections in Cyprus took place before independence on 13 December 1959. Archbishop Makarios was elected President of the Republic defeating his opponent Ioannis Clerides by a margin of two to one. The next elections were due in 1965 but were postponed as a result of the extraordinary situation created by the intercommunal strife. The term of office was extended by a law of the House of Representatives. 1968 Elections At the elections on 25 February 1968, Archbishop Makarios was elected with 96% of the votes. In 1973 President Makarios was re-elected unopposed. After his death in 1977, the then President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou, assumed duties temporarily. On 31 August 1977, Spyros Kyprianou was declared elected unopposed, for the remainder of the presidential term. In February 1978 he was again declared elected unopposed for a new five-year term. 1983 Elections On 13 February 1983, President Kyprianou, supported by his center Democratic Party and left-wing AKEL, was re-elected to office. He was opposed by Glafcos Clerides, the leader of the right-wing Democratic Rally Party and Vassos Lyssarides of the Socialist party, EDEK. 1988 Elections In February 1988, George Vassiliou was elected to the post of President of the Republic. In the first round on 14 February 1988, none of the four candidates received the required 50% plus one vote, but in the runoff, on 21 February 1988, Vassiliou managed to secure the 51.63% of the votes cast. 1993 Elections On 14 February 1993, Glafcos Clerides, the leader of the Democratic Rally, was elected to the post of President of the Republic, defeating George Vassiliou, who again ran as an independent candidate supported by AKEL and ADISOK. Clerides secured the support of the Democratic Party in the runoff. 1998 Elections In the elections of February 1998 President Glafcos Clerides was re-elected to the post of President of the Republic. 2003 Elections On 16 February 2003, Presidential Elections were held for the election of the new President of the Republic. Tassos Papadopoulos was elected President in one round. 2008 Elections The first round of Presidential Elections was held on 18 February 2008 with the following results: PANCYPRIAN RESULTS TOTAL NUMBER OF REGISTERED VOTERS: 516.441 FROM: 1.157 POLLING STATIONS ABSTENTIONS: 53.594 10,38% NUMBER OF VOTES CAST: 462.847 89,62% INVALID BALLOT PAPERS: 7.798 1,68% BLANK BALLOT PAPERS: 4.410 0,95% VALID BALLOT PAPERS: 450.639 97,36% RECEIVED VOTES PERCENTAGE Ioannis Kasoulides 150.996 33,51% Dimitris Christofias 150.016 33,29% Tassos Papadopoulos 143.249 31,79% Marios Matsakis 3.460 0,77% Kostas Kyriakou (Outopos) 1.092 0,24% Kostas Themistokleous 753 0,17% Andreas Efstratiou 713 0,16% Christodoulos Neofytou 243 0,05% Anastasis Michael 117 0,03% A runoff was held on 25 February 2008 and yielded the following outcome: PANCYPRIAN RESULTS REGISTERED VOTERS: 516.448 FROM: 1.157 POLLING STATIONS ABSTENTIONS: 47.305 9,16% NUMBER OF VOTES CAST: 469.143 90,84% INVALID BALLOT PAPERS: 10.576 2,25% BLANK BALLOT PAPERS: 7.768 1,66% VALID BALLOT PAPERS: 450.799 96,09% DIFFERENCE FROM FIRST RECEIVED VOTES PERCENTAGE ROUND Ioannis Kasoulides 210.195 46,63% +13,12% Demetris 240.604 53,37% +20,8% Christofias 2013 Elections Presidential elections were held on 17 February 2013. A runoff was held on 24 February 2013. Nicos Anastasiades of the Democratic Rally won the election. The other candidates were Stavros Malas of the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL); Praxoula Antoniadou of the United Democrats; Lakis Ioannou with the support of LASOK; Loukas Stavrou; ELAM's Giorgos Charalambous, Giorgos Lillikas of Movement for Social Democracy (EDEK); and independents Andreas Efstratiou, Makaria-Andri Stylianou, Kostas Kyriacou(Outopos) and Solon Gregoriou. 17 February 2013, Presidential Election Results - Pancyprian Registered Electors 545,491 Voters 453,534 83.1% Blank and Invalid Ballots 12,278 2.7% Valid Votes 441,256 97.3% Candidate Votes % Nikos Anastasiades 200,591 45.5 Stavros Malas 118,755 26.9 Giorgos Lillikas 109,996 24.9 Georgios Charalampous 3,899 0.9 Praxoula Antoniadou Kyriakou 2,678 0.6 Makaria Antri Stylianou 1,898 0.4 Lakis Ioannou 1,278 0.3 Solon Grigoriou 792 0.2 Kostas Kyriakou (Outopos) 722 0.2 Andreas Efstratiou 434 0.1 Loukas Stavrou 213 0.0 24 February 2013, Second Round Election Results - Pancyprian Registered Electors 545,493 Voters 445,009 81.6% Blank and Invalid Ballots 32,777 7.4% Valid Votes 412,232 92.6% Candidate Votes % Nikos Anastasiades 236,965 57.5 Stravos Malas 175,267 42.5 .
