Romania lost out to Greece a play-off for a 2014 FIFA World Cup finals place, but a Group F double over visitors whose qualifying hopes are now over will keep them on track for UEFA EURO 2016. • Alexandru Chipchiu is suspended after accumulating three bookings. The following players are a yellow card away from a ban: Claudiu Keseru (Romania), Nikos Karelis, , , and (Greece). Previous meetings • Greece's ill-starred UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying campaign began with a 1-0 home defeat to Romania, Ciprian Marica scoring from the penalty spot in the first game of Claudio Ranieri's short spell as Greece coach. • The sides have met 34 times at senior level, with Romania's record in those games reading W18 D9 L7 (W11 D3 L1 in Romania – W6 D5 L5 in Greece). These matches include two friendlies played on neutral territory – a win for Romania in Belgrade in 1932 and a 2-2 draw in Sofia in 1935 – but not Greece's 3-2 win against Romania on 12 May 2002, which is not classed as an official FIFA game. • The balance of power between the two nations has shifted in recent years; it took 16 attempts for Greece to record their first win against Romania, a 2-1 success in Athens on 13 December 1978. Things are now much more even: since the turn of the millennium, Romania's seven official games against Greece have ended W3 D1 L3. • Greece eliminated Romania in the play-offs for the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil, winning 3-1 in Piraeus and earning a 1-1 draw in Bucharest. Form guide • Unbeaten Romania have the best defence in qualifying, with just one goal conceded in seven outings. • Romania are unbeaten in five qualifying home games (W3 D2) since a 2-0 loss to Turkey on 10 September 2013. • Greece are without a win on the road in Group F, coach Sergio Markarián tendering his resignation in the aftermath of their most recent away game, a 2-1 loss in the Faroe Islands. Trivia and links • This is Greece's 250th competitive game; this is their 124th UEFA European Championship game, while they have played 126 in the FIFA World Cup. • Romania defender Dragoş Grigore turns 29 on the day of the Greece game. • In 14 UEFA age-group meetings with Romania, Greece's record is W10 D0 L4. • In the 28 UEFA competition fixtures between Greek and Romanian clubs, the Greek sides' record is W11 D2 L15, though the Greek side has won the last three encounters without conceding.

6 Romania - Greece Monday 7 September 2015 - 20.45CET (21.45 local time) Match press kit National Arena Bucharest, Bucharest Head coach Anghel Iordănescu Date of birth: 4 May 1950 Nationality: Romanian Playing career: FC Steaua București, OFI Crete FC Coaching career: FC Steaua București (twice), Anorthorsis Famagusta FC, Romania (three times), Greece, Al-Hilal, FC Rapid București, Al-Ain (twice), Al-Ittihad • The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) named Iordănescu 'Coach of the 20th Century' for his exploits with both Steaua and the national team, to which he was appointed for the third time on 27 October 2014. • Between the ages of 12 and 32 he was a midfielder with Steaua, making his debut aged 18 in 1968. Before leaving in 1982 he won two titles and four Romanian Cups, scoring 155 goals in 317 league games. He also made 57 appearances for Romania, scoring 21 international goals. • After two years at OFI Crete, returned to Steaua as assistant and surprisingly played as a 73rd-minute substitute in the 1986 European Champions Clubs' Cup final win against FC Barcelona. Then became Steaua coach, winning the UEFA Super Cup, three league titles and three cups in four seasons as well as reaching the 1989 European Cup final. After two years at Anorthosis, returned to Steaua and won the league again. • In 1993 became national coach and led Romania to their first FIFA World Cup quarter-final a year later, also taking them to EURO '96 and the 1998 World Cup where they made the last 16, a unique run in the team's history. After 1998 had spells as Greece coach and in the Middle East, leading Al-Hilal to 2000 Asian Club Championship victory, and coached Romania again between 2002 and 2004. • In 2004 he joined Saudi Arabia's Al-Ittihad, winning the 2005 AFC Champions League, before retiring from football to concentrate on politics, becoming a Romanian senator. However in 2013 he was appointed FRF technical director and ten months later became national coach again. Kostas Tsanas Date of birth: 22 August 1967 Nationality: Greek Playing career: Levadiakos FC, Kalamata FC, Athinaikos FC, Ethnikos Asteras FC Coaching career: Athinaikos FC, Ilysiakos FC, Greece Under-19 (assistant), Greece U21 (assistant), Greece U19, Greece U21, Greece (caretaker) • As a striker Tsanas spent the bulk of his playing career at Levadiakos, hanging up his boots in 2000. He promptly moved into coaching, starting in the youth sections of Athinaikos the following year before taking charge of the senior squad in 2005, moving on to Ilysiakos 12 months later. • Tsanas spent 2008/09 working as a scout for AEK Athens before joining the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) as a coach. He was appointed assistant to Giorgos Georgiadis with the Under-19 team; a year later the duo took over the U21 squad. • In October 2011 Tsanas succeeded Leonidas Vokolos as U19 head coach after Vokolos had become Fernando Santos's assistant in the senior squad. He led the side to the 2012 UEFA European U19 Championship final, losing 1- 0 to Spain in Tallinn. • Tsanas then switched to the U21s, also getting the Greece team to the FIFA U-20 World Cup for the first time – guiding his side to the last 16 at the tournament in Turkey. • In August 2015 he took over the reins of the senior national squad after the departure of Sergio Markarián.

:: Team facts

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
