Nigeria Centre for Disease Control Protecting the health of Nigerians Cholera hotspots mapping in Nigeria Iliya Cheshi - NCDC [email protected] Profile: Nigeria • Nigeria is a federal republic comprising 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja • Inhabited by more than 250 ethnic groups with over 500 distinct languages • Nigeria is divided roughly in half between Christians and Muslims 195.9 million (2018) Census 2 NIGERIA CENTRE FOR DISEASE CONTROL Introduction • Cholera remains a global public health problem, disproportionately affecting the tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world, where focal areas or hotspots play a key role in perpetuating the disease transmission • Targeting these hotspots with proven interventions e.g. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH), as well as Oral Cholera Vaccines (OCV) could reduce the mean annual incidence of the entire sub-Saharan African region by half (Lessler et al) • The Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) has thus advocated for a comprehensive cholera control strategy where the use of OCV plays a complementary role to other preventive interventions, chiefly, ensuring access to WaSH 3 NIGERIA CENTRE FOR DISEASE CONTROL • To align its cholera control strategies with the global road map of the GTFCC, the team at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) released a document detailing their preparedness and response plans • Assessing cholera transmission dynamics in Nigeria and identifying cholera hotspots were outlined as immediate-term goals. International Journal of Business and Social Science Vol. 2 No. 15; August 2011 INFORMAL MICROFINANCE AND ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES OF RURAL DWELLERS IN KWARA SOUTH SENATORIAL DISTRICT OF NIGERIA IJAIYA, Muftau Adeniyi Department of Accounting and Finance University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria E-mail : [email protected], Phone: +2348036973561 Abstract Rural areas, like urban areas have increasing demand for credit because such credit reduces the impact of seasonality on incomes. However, formal financial institutions have maintained low presence in the rural areas. This has affected the rural dwellers’ access to deposit savings and credits that can improve their economic activities. This study examined the influence of informal microfinance on economic activities of rural dwellers in the selected rural areas of Kwara South Senatorial District. Using a multiple regression analysis, six hundred (600) questionnaire was administered on members of informal microfinance institution in the study area, the study found that fund provided as credit facilities for transaction purposes, funds for housing and combating diseases have significant influence on the economic activities of the rural areas. The study recommends group savings and group lending in order to increase savings and credits to the rural dwellers. Government should also provide improved infrastructural facilities that would enable rural dwellers have more access to their economic activities Key Words: Microfinance, Informal, Economic Activities, Rural, Kwara 1.0 Introduction Africa‟s development challenges go deeper than low income, falling trade shares, low savings and slow growth. They also include inequality and uneven access to productive resources, social exclusion and insecurity especially among the women (Pitamber, 2003). However, more specific concern is raised in Nigeria due to rural-urban disparities in income distribution, access to education and health care services, and prevalence of ethnic or cross-boundary conflicts. -

Abstract The incessant failure of road network in Nigeria has generated a lot of concern by road users and government. Apart from lives and properties that are lost annually to road crashes, road rehabilitation across the country has become a financial burden to the federal government. Several factors have been identified to be responsible to road failure in Nigeria; they include geological, geomorphological, road usage, bad construction and wrong approach to maintenance. Hence, this paper examines some of the factors responsible for road failure along Ilorin-Ajase Ipo road, Kwara State Nigeria. Soil samples were collected from Five (5) portions of the road that are badly affected by road failure. These portions include: Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute (ARMTI) 17+800km, Kabba Owode 18+00Km, Idofian 23+700Km, Koko 29+700Km and Omupo 35+700Km axis. The soil samples collected were analyzed four engineering properties: particle size distribution (PSD),atterberg limit, compaction test California Bearing Ratio (CBR). -

European Scientific Journal August edition vol. 8, No.18 ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 A HISTORICAL SURVEY OF SOCIO-POLITICAL ADMINISTRATION IN AKURE REGION UP TO THE CONTEMPORARY PERIOD Afe, Adedayo Emmanuel, PhD Department of Historyand International Studies,AdekunleAjasin University,Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria Abstract Thepaper examines the political transformation of Akureregion from the earliest times to the present. The paper traces these stages of political development in order to demonstrate features associated with each stage. It argues further that pre-colonial Akure region, like other Yoruba regions, had a workable political system headed by a monarch. However, the Native Authority Ordinance of 1916, which brought about the establishment of the Native Courts and British judicial administration in the region led to the decline in the political power of the traditional institution.Even after independence, the traditional political institution has continually been subjugated. The work relies on both oral and written sources, which were critically examined. The paper, therefore,argues that even with its present political status in the contemporary Nigerian politics, the traditional political institution is still relevant to the development of thesociety. Keywords: Akure, Political, Social, Traditional and Authority Introduction The paper reviews the political administration ofAkure region from the earliest time to the present and examines the implication of the dynamics between the two periods may have for the future. Thus,assessment of the indigenous political administration, which was prevalent before the incursion of the colonial administration, the political administration during the colonial rule and the present political administration in the region are examined herein.However, Akure, in this context, comprises the present Akure North, Akure South, and Ifedore Local Government Areas of Ondo State, Nigeria. -
