ALGER 2 JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY “Learned Institutions ought to be favorite objects with every free people. They throw that light over the public mind which is the best security against crafty and dangerous encroachments on the public liberty.” —James Madison in a letter to William T Barry, 4 Aug 1822, DLC: Madison Papers The official seal of James Madison University is based upon the baronial 13th-century coat of arms of the Madison family The shape of the shield signifies its historic periods and the symbols are original The mantling and insignia are black upon a silver shield with two black chevrons, each charged with a golden star The torch in the crest position signifies enlightenment, and the motto, "Knowledge is Liberty," is derived from quotations by James Madison HONORING James Madison University is the only university named for James Madison, the Father of the U.S. Constitution and fourth president of the United States. In many ways the connection to Mr. Madison’s legacy is much deeper than the name only. As we celebrate commencement, it is important for us to bring Mr. Madison to life for our university community. Acknowledging Madison is not intended as a history lesson. We believe that understanding Madison and his achievements is understanding liberty and its foundations. If each graduate can leave this university with that awareness crowning their outstanding JMU education, then liberty can be multiplied wherever they may go. James Madison University will proudly send nearly 4,500 agents of liberty and social harmony to the Commonwealth of Virginia and throughout the world. 2021 MAY COMMENCEMENT 3 FOUNDING JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY James Madison University was founded on March 14, 1908, when Virginia Gov. Claude A. Swanson signed the legislation creating the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg. Early in the 20th century, the General Assembly, responding to a growing interest in public higher education in Virginia, authorized the establishment of a new normal school for the education of women teachers. (“Normal” schools were so named because they were supposed to set the standard — or “norm” — for excellence.) The idea of a new college was highly attractive to communities throughout the commonwealth. There was widespread competition in the state with 28 cities and towns making a case to be the site for the new school. State Sen. George B. Keezell and Del. P.B.F. Good of Rockingham County led the efforts for Harrisonburg in the State Senate and House of Delegates. The school began classes on Sept. 30, 1909, with an enrollment of 150 students and 15 faculty members in two buildings on a 50-acre campus. Today’s James Madison University has over 22,000 students, more than 2,500 faculty and staff, and a 785-acre campus with more than 130 buildings. 4 JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY JMU BOARD and ADMINISTRATION Board of Visitors Vice Provosts Lara P. In May, your institution was invited to customize these groups via a form on the Institution Interface. This report summarizes how your comparison groups were constructed and lists the institutions within them. NSSE comparison groups may be customized by (a) identifying specific institutions from the list of all 2018 and 2019 NSSE participants, (b) composing the group by selecting institutional characteristics, or (c) a combination of these. Institutions that chose not to customize received default groupsa that provide relevant comparisons for most institutions. Institutions that appended additional question sets in the form of Topical Modules or through consortium participation were also invited to customize comparison groups for those reports. The default for those groups was all other 2018 and 2019 institutions where the questions were administered. Please note: Comparison group details for Topical Module and consortium reports are documented separately in those reports. • Alton H. Blackington Photograph Collection Finding
Special Collections and University Archives : University Libraries Alton H. Blackington Photograph Collection 1898-1943 15 boxes (4 linear ft.) Call no.: PH 061 Collection overview A native of Rockland, Maine, Alton H. "Blackie" Blackington (1893-1963) was a writer, photojournalist, and radio personality associated with New England "lore and legend." After returning from naval service in the First World War, Blackington joined the staff of the Boston Herald, covering a range of current events, but becoming well known for his human interest features on New England people and customs. He was successful enough by the mid-1920s to establish his own photo service, and although his work remained centered on New England and was based in Boston, he photographed and handled images from across the country. Capitalizing on the trove of New England stories he accumulated as a photojournalist, Blackington became a popular lecturer and from 1933-1953, a radio and later television host on the NBC network, Yankee Yarns, which yielded the books Yankee Yarns (1954) and More Yankee Yarns (1956). This collection of glass plate negatives was purchased by Robb Sagendorf of Yankee Publishing around the time of Blackington's death. Reflecting Blackington's photojournalistic interests, the collection covers a terrain stretching from news of public officials and civic events to local personalities, but the heart of the collection is the dozens of images of typically eccentric New England characters and human interest stories. Most of the images were taken by Blackington on 4x5" dry plate negatives, however many of the later images are made on flexible acetate stock and the collection includes several images by other (unidentified) photographers distributed by the Blackington News Service.
