[email protected] Redshirt freshman Darran Butts recorded his fi rst collegiate 2019 HAMPTON UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL QUARTERBACK The quarterback spot this year sees three returning from 2018 with a transfer from the University of Maine in the mix. Bruce Dixon started once last year and is a big, strong athlete who is an excellent thrower of the football. Dallas Hall was a multi-sport athlete in high school with solid arm strength and threw a 50-yard touchdown pass last year. Austin Bradley is a quarterback who can hurt a team with his arm and his legs providing a double option for the Pirates. Transfer Isaiah Robinson is a very talented quarterback who has the ball jumping off his hand when he throws. He has a great touch on the deep ball and will look to push for time behind center. Joining the team at the start of camp was graduate transfer Deondre Francois from Florida State University. He threw for just under 6,300 yards in 25 games as the Seminoles quarterback. He won ACC Rookie of the Year honors in 2016 when he threw for 3,350 yards and 20 touchdowns to lead FSU to a 10-2 record and an Orange Bowl win over Michigan. RUNNING BACKS The Pirates return two of their top three running backs in 2019 as junior Will Robinson was the leading rusher last year averaging just over seven yards per carry. He turned it up a notch once he got into the starting lineup as he ended the season with four 100 yard games in the last fi ve. Robinson ran for 154 yards in a 24-23 win over Presby- terian and followed that with 165 yards in a win over Virginia University of Lynchburg. Raeshad Herriott showed some glimpses of the type of back he could be for the Pirates late last season as he scored two touchdowns in a road win at SUNY Maritime and followed that with a season-best 135 yards on 19 car- ries with a touchdown at Mississippi Valley State. Will Eason fought through some injuries last season but will provide experience at the position. Three new faces will provide depth in the backfi eld between Darran Butts, Tai James and Ike Onwuka. All three gave fl ashes in the spring of potential and will be knocking on the doors to crack the starting lineup. Shai McKenzie was granted a sixth-year through the NCAA and returns this season after an injury-plagued 2018 when he appeared in three games and ran for 199 yards. WIDE RECEIVERS Eight of the top nine receivers return for Hampton in 2019. The Pirates lose nine touchdowns and nearly 575 yards of receptions in Byron Barney, but the next eight from last season return who account for 112 receptions and 16 touchdowns. Antonio Graham and Ronald Bell are the top two returning wide outs who combined for 43 receptions and 631 yards to go with six touchdowns. Graham averaged 14.2 yards per catch and had three touchdowns, while Bell averaged 15.3 yards per catch with three touchdowns as well. Other returning receivers from 2018 include Alec Dana, Marcel Paul, Jadakis Bonds, Adeon Johnson and Lorenzo Thompson. OFFENSIVE LINE An experienced off ensive line returns in 2019 behind starters Ryan Carlisle, Gibril Ghee, Derrick Moreland and Malik Mackey. Carlisle started every game at center last season and is one of the strongest players on the team squatting over 550 lbs. Ghee has seen action at center and guard while starting the last two seasons. A Dean’s List student last semester, Ghee is very powerful with a squat max over 700 pounds. Mackey has started each of the last two years and has seen action at both tackle spots. He has great range with his size and athletic ability. Moreland started the last two years at left guard. He’s naturally powerful and very athletic with great instincts for o-line play. Several new faces will look to crack the lineup including transfer Michael Joseph from Memphis. He started the fi rst two games last year for the Tigers and moves very well for a big man. Some of the returning faces will include William Daniel, Quinton Ragland, Ari Reed, Arnesio Rosado, Jacori Shaw and Keldrick Wilson.
