  • The Iconic Interview with Steve Englehart By: Chris “Chrispy” Barcomb
The Iconic interview with Steve Englehart By: Chris “Chrispy” Barcomb The word “Iconic” doesn’t lend itself just to the name of this Facebook page or Podcast, but it could also be used to describe Steve Englehart’s comic book career. As a writer, he has written just about every character known to comic book fans, for both Marvel and DC, and his career stretched over two decades. Even just recently, Marvel released Captain America Serpents Unite (a one- shot), which features a reprint of Captain America #168 written by Steve Englehart. Steve Englehart’s Captain America run began in 1972 with Captain America #153 and ended in 1975 with Captain America #186. During this run, he introduced characters like William Burnside, Jack Monroe, Solarr, Nightshade, Nomad, and a newly formed Serpent Squad. He also introduced and set the foundation for the Secret Empire. He worked with some legendary comic artists as well, including Sal Buscema, Herb Trempe, and Frank Steve Englehart Robbins. Together they brought us stories about Photo Credit: Picture taken from the Secret Empire, the crazy Captain America of Steve Englehart’s personal website the 1950’s, and the true origin of the Falcon. Read on below to see what Steve Englehart had to say about his time writing Captain America and his thoughts on the character today. 1. How did you get the opportunity to write Captain America for Marvel? I’d been working my way up as a writer, from monster stories to romance stories to, finally, THE BEAST. Evidently, Editor-in-Chief Roy Thomas liked what I was doing, because one day he gave me both CAPTAIN AMERICA and THE DEFENDERS.

It was somewhat beset by problems external to it, which I suppose I should mention: general economic downturn for a couple of years leading up to it, increased security hassles in travel ing, SARS, Mad Cow disease, Artist Guest of Honor falling and breaking his hip less than a month before the convention, biggest-ever black-out less than two weeks before the convention, . I think that is at least the high points. But some problems were of Torcon's own doing. The process of the programming left something to be desired.

2000 The Y2K bug fears prove to be groundless. Shannon O‟Donnell convinces Henry Janeway to close his bookstore so that construction of the Millennium Gate can move forward. LeVar Raymond was born. The International Space Station is inaugurated this year. 2001 January 1st: Groundbreaking for the Millennium Gate. September 11th: A massive terrorist attack is launched against the United States of America, destroying the World Trade Center and seriously damaging the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Thousands of people die in the attacks, one of whom is a firefighter whose firefighter‟s axe will become a treasured family heirloom, eventually coming into the possession of Domenica Corsi. Shaun Christopher was prevented from boarding one of the planes which crashed into the World Trade Center by Gary Seven. As a result, he survived to command the first manned mission to Saturn aboard USS Lewis & Clark in 2020, a pivotal event in the history of human space travel. 2002 Nomad, Humanity‟s first true interstellar probe, designed by Jackson Roykirk, is launched by NASA. In 2153, the only map of early 21st century Detroit in the database of the NX-01 Enterprise will come from this year. 2003 On January 29th, US President George W. Bush gives his State of the Union Address. He speaks about his plans to remove Iraq‟s leader Saddam Hussein from power, introducing hydrogen cars, abortion and fighting AIDS in Africa. A contemporary news article about this event by Jake Tapper appeared in the Daniels‟ 31st century database. Lieutenant McMillan was scheduled in 1999 to be the co-pilot on a joint mission between NASA and the Europeans for a four month tour on the International Space Station that began in 2003.

Women at Warp Episode 126: T’Pol Up In Your Business SUE: Hi and welcome to Women At Warp: A Roddenberry Star Trek podcast. Join us as our crew of four women Star Trek fans boldly go on our biweekly mission to explore our favorite franchise. My name is Sue and thanks for tuning in. With me today are crew members Jarrah- JARRAH: That’s T’Jarrah to you. SUE: *laughs* And then “T’Grace.” GRACE: Actually it's “Grace’T.” *all laugh* Get it right next time, it's my name. SUE: “One is my name. The other is not.” And for today's episode, we are joined by our special guest Kerry. KERRY: Hi everyone SUE: Kerry. Would you like to introduce yourself a little bit to our listeners? Tell them about your history with Star Trek? KERRY: I would love to. So yes, my name's Kerry and I've been watching Star Trek my entire life. My mom introduced me when I was little, and my first Star Trek memory is looking up on top of my parent's fridge and seeing Mr. Spock on this old black and white TV which we had in the late 80s. We were a little behind in the times there. But yeah, it just went from there. I grew up watching TNG and I watched some of Voyager and Deep Space Nine and I actually missed Enterprise during the first run. I was in college and busy doing other things and I just recently watched it and I really enjoyed it.
