Lake Malawi Destination Guide
Lake Malawi Destination Guide Overview of Lake Malawi Occupying a fifth of the country, Lake Malawi is the third largest lake in Africa and home to more fish species than any other lake in the world. Also known as Lake Nyasa, it is often referred to as 'the calendar lake' because it is 365 miles (590km) long and 52 miles (85km) wide. Situated between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, this African Great Lake is about 40,000 years old, a product of the Great Rift Valley fault line. There are fishing villages to be found along the lakeshore where residents catch a range of local fish including chambo, kampango (catfish), lake salmon and tiger fish. The export of fish from the lake contributes significantly to the country's economy, and the delicious chambo, similar to bream, is served in most Malawian eateries. Visitors to Lake Malawi can see colourful mbuna fish in the water, while there are also occasional sightings of crocodiles, hippos, monkeys and African fish eagles along the shore. The nearby Eastern Miombo woodlands are home to African wild dogs. Swimming, snorkelling and diving are popular activities in the tropical waters of the lake, and many visitors also enjoy waterskiing, sailing and fishing. There are many options available for holiday accommodation at the lake, including resorts, guesthouses and caravan or camping parks. All budgets are catered for, with luxury lodges attracting the glamorous and humble campsites hosting families and backpackers. Cape Maclear is a well-developed lakeside town, and nearby Monkey Bay is a great holiday resort area. Club Makokola, near Mangochi, is also a popular resort. -

TANZANIA & ZANZIBAR DIARY Dates: 24th June 2009 to 6th August 2009 43 Days Tanzania miles = 3016 miles (4826 km) Trip miles = 12835 miles (20536 km) Day 136 - Wednesday 24th June CONTINUED Zambia to Tanzania First stop at the Tunduma border was the Tanzanian immigration: fill out the entry forms and hand over with passports to one official; then hand over US$50 each for visas to another official and then waited and waited. Judi stayed on whist I went to the customs desk to get the carnet stamped up; ‘anything to declare?’ He gave me a funny look when I said no but he accepted it. Apart from exiting South Africa in March, nobody has even seen the vehicle let alone look at it or inspect it. Next stop, road fund licence, US$20, and fuel levy, US$5: closed, gone to lunch. And this is the only commercial international border crossing between Zambia and East Africa! Back to the vehicle where an insurance certificate and windscreen sticker had been prepared for us for another US$70 for three months; my advisor assured me it would have been US$70 for just one day. I believed him as he was my trusty personal advisor! Against all advice we decided to change some pounds for Tanzanian shillings as we probably couldn’t do this at a bank; we knew the rate would be poor but I left Judi to it. I was still waiting for the office to open when I heard a familiar car alarm go off. I wandered back to the vehicle to find Judi, who had locked the doors on the fob rather than door button, inside but had moved to get some water as it was hot and set the alarm off! She was a bit upset as she thought she had been diddled on the exchange rate by a factor of 10. -

Background To The Review 2001 The Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Policy Program (SSATP) was launched as a joint initiative of the World Bank and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) to improve transport sector performance by promoting policy reforms and institutional changes. The basic premises of the Program are that: (i) policy reform is essential to obtain improved transport services; and (ii) countries and their development partners need to collaborate within the common framework of policies in the sector. The program has over the last twelve years evolved into a flexible tool for the development of such a framework. SSATP is a broad collaborative effort of national development aid agencies, international agencies (UNDP, ILO and UNCTAD), and African institutions (i.e. UAR, MINCONMAR, PTA), with the World Bank and the ECA acting as the Executing Agencies. -
