A Fort Drum & 10th Mountain Division Publication THE SUN NEVER SETS ON THE 10TH MOUNTAIN PATCH December 2018, Vol. 1 Issue 10 Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment pull security during 10th Mountain Division’s Mountain Peak OUR LEGACY Operation Restore Hope began in December of 1992 in Somalia. Task Force Mountain was built around 2nd Brigade Combat Team and, at its peak, consisted of approximately 10,000 Soldiers. Coalition forces including large components from France, Italy, Belgium, Morocco, Australia, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Canada soon joined U.S. forces and the U.S. Army. During the course of Restore Hope, some 38,000 Soldiers from 23 different nations and representatives from 49 different humanitarian relief operations worked together to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Somalia. 1 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW 21 - GUN SALUTE FOR PRESIDENT BUSH Soldiers from 10th Mountain Division performed a 21-gun salute Dec 6 to honor the former President George H.W. Bush. 2 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW 50 - GUN SALUTE TO THE NATION The 10th Mountain Division honored the former president George H. W. Bush on Dec. 6 with a 50 Gun Salute - one for each state - to honor his service to the nation on the day of his internment. 3 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW VETERAN’S DAY COMMUNITY EVENTS 10th Mountain Soldiers attend the annual Veteran’s Day Wreath Laying Ceremony to honor the men and women who have served in the U.S. military, Nov. 8 at Fort Drum. Service Members from the Fort Drum area salute the flag before a speech was given to students about resilience during the Sackets Harbor Central School 11th Annual Veteran’s Day Celebration, Nov. 9. Sudents from the local North Country celebrated Veteran’s Day as part of the 10th Mountain Division Sustainment Brigade’s SNAP partnership with Indian River School District and Gouverneur. 4 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW ANNUAL WREATH-LAYING CEREMONY The Watertown German-American Club hosted their annual wreath-laying for German and one Italian POWs buried on Fort Drum with the support of the 10th Mountain Division and the German War Graves Commission. 5 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW MOUNTAIN PEAK 2018 Soldiers from across 10th Mountain Division participated in Mountain Peak 2018 during the end of November into the beginning of December on Fort Drum. The training event is designed to evaluate subordinate units before their mission rehearsal exercises, which will take place during the beginning of 2019. The intensive training gave Soldiers the skills needed for future deployments while offering them the know-how to operate in a deployed environment. During the exercise, Soldiers got to test out a prototype transport - a robotic pack-mule that can carry up to 1,000 pounds of grear, lightening the load for small infantry squads. 6 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW Capt. This was part of a training exercise to prepare for Mountain Peak. 7 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW A Soldier from 2nd Brigade Combat Team places the 10th Mountain Division patch on a Soldier’s right sleeve during the Task Force Caisson patching ceremony in Afghanistan. A Soldier from 2nd Brigade Combat Team, currently deployed to Afghanistan, guards a post in Uruzgan Province Nov. 8. Soldiers from 3rd Brigade Combat Team kicked off the holiday season with their annual Turkey Bowl. Families and Soldiers gathered for a big tailgate party and flag football tournament. Soldiers from 3rd Brigade Combat Team led a 21-gun salute at Fort Polk, Louisiana, Dec. 6. The 21-gun salute was conducted in honor of the late George H.W. Bush, 41st president of the United States. 9 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW Vice Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, General James C. McConville, visited Fort Drum on Nov. 14. Gen. McConville met with brigade leadership and spoke with Soldiers as he toured the airfield. Soldiers from 10th Combat Aviation Brigade completed aerial gunnery tables I-XII. The tables include: individual crew qualifications with the M240H, advancing to multi-ship training and culminating in a platoon live-fire qualification. 10th Combat Aviation Brigade Soldiers practice sling loads with Soldiers from 1st Brigade Combat Team during Mountain Peak. 10 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW A Soldier from 10th Mountain Division Sustainment Brigade ground guides a Light Medium Tactical Vehicle, a military carrier truck, into position during the preparation step of Mountain Peak. The training event is designed to externally evaluate subordinate Soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division units before their mission rehearsal exercises. Sustainment Brigade celebrated The intensive training will give Soldiers the Veteran’s Day with local North Country skills needed for future deployments while students as part of the brigade SNAP offering them the know-how to operate in a partnership with Indian River School deployed environment. Soldiers and family members were treated to a Thanksgiving spread and was served to them by some of their command staff. 12 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW COL SULLIVAN MOUNTAIN SALUTE 10th Mountain Division welcomed Col. Brian P. Sullivan to the 10th Mountain team during a Mountain Salute Ceremony Nov. 19 at Fort Drum. 13 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW 510TH REDEPLOYMENT The 510th Human Resources Company returned home to Fort Drum on Nov. 28 after a nine month deployment to Afghanistan. The unit provided postal support, processed more than 12 million pounds of mail and care packages in and out of Afghanistan, and operated the largest Army post office in the Central Command. 14 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW FORT DRUM LOST VILLAGES HISTORY TOUR Nearly 100 community members attend the Fort Drum Lost Villages History Tour on Nov. 9, hosted by Cultural Resources and Natural Resources staff, with stops at several historic locations to include the villages of Sterlingville, Woods Mills and Lewisburg. Dr. Laurie Rush, Fort Drum Cultural Resources manager, talked with some attendees at Gates Cemetery on Nov. 9 during the Lost Villages History Tour at Fort Drum. Sepp Scanlin, 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum Museum director, welcomed attendees to the museum during the Fort Drum Lost Villages History Tour on Nov. 9. 15 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW CHANCELLOR OF SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY VISITS FORT DRUM Chancellor and President of Syracuse University, Kent Syverud, visited Nov. 29W the 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum to observe a live-fire training exercise and learn more about how the Division trains at Fort Drum, New York. 16 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW NATIONAL AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE MONTH 10th Mountain Division Equal Opportunity Office with support from the 10th Mountain Division Sustainment Brigade hosted its annual National American Indian Heritage Observance Nov. 14 with guest speakers Mr. Perry Ground, Turtle Clan member of the Onondaga Nation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and Command Sgt. Maj. Roy Young at The Commons on Fort Drum. 17 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW 2018 ALL ARMY HOCKEY AT FORT DRUM All Army Ice Hockey returned to Fort Drum for the sophomore season as nearly 30 Soldier-athletes gathered Nov. 28 at Watertown Municipal Arena for their first practice of the two-week trial camp. The training session included some skills and conditioning drills as the players got to know each other’s abilities on the ice. 18 READY NOW, RELEVANT TOMORROW ANNUAL TREE AND MENORAH LIGHTING CEREMONY, TREES FOR TROOPS Fort Drum Soldiers and community members gathered outside the Commons Nov. 29 for the annual Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony.
