Memorable Moments In The UNCW-WCU Series

In the series opener and the fi rst of two games during the 1974-75 campaign, Western Caro- lina carves out an 85-61 decision on Jan. 10, 1975, at historic Reid Gymnasium in Cullohwee.

After three straight losses, UNCW picks up its fi rst win in the series on Feb. 24, 1976, in a 104-88 triumph over Western Carolina at Trask Coliseum. Willie Jackson explodes for 30 points and Delaney Jones and Dave Wolff rule the glass with 11 rebounds apiece to give the Seahawks their fi rst victory over the Catamounts.

Western Carolina rallies from a nine-point halftime defi cit behind Quinton Lytle to edge UNCW, 69-68, in the UNCC Classic on Nov. 30, 1984, at the Charlotte Coliseum. Lytle winds up with 28 points on 12-of-21 shooting to pace four in double fi gures for the Catamounts. Seahawk great Brian Rowsom pumps in 23 points on 9-of-14 fi eld goals and adds 10 rebounds, but misses a potential game-winning jumper with 23 seconds remaining. Bobby Jo Springer chips in 17 points for UNCW.

Mark Byington anchors three players in double fi gures with 18 points to power UNCW past Western Carolina, 72-60, on Nov. 28, 1997, in the opening game of the Coca-Cola Classic at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, N.C. The Seahawks bounce back from a 32-31 halftime defi cit to overcome 33.3 percent shooting in the fi rst game played in the new arena. Danny Dahl contributes 14 points off the bench and point guard Billy Donlon has 10 points in the victory. Jarvis Graham’s 12 points is high for the Catamounts. Byington, Donlon and Stan Simmons are named to the All-Tournament Team. Head Coach Takayo Siddle Takayo Siddle, a key lieutenant for Kevin Keatts during UNCW’s resurgence in men’s basketball earlier this decade, returned to the Port City as the new head coach of the Seahawk program on March 13, 2020.

Siddle, 34, is making his fi fth coaching stop and fi rst as a head coach. He previ- ously served as an assistant coach at Hargrave Military Academy, Gardner-Webb, UNCW and NC State. Siddle becomes the 13th head coach in UNCW history.

Siddle played for and coached with Keatts and served as interim head coach for the Seahawks in March of 2017 before joining his longtime mentor on the NC State bench in Raleigh. Siddle is a tireless recruiter and was tabbed the No. 4 recruiter in the country earlier this year.

During his three-year stay at UNCW from 2014-17, Siddle helped the Seahawks return to prominence in the CAA, winning three regular season championships and two CAA Tournament crowns (2016, 2017). UNCW compiled a 72-28 record with three post-season berths in Siddle’s fi rst stop on the North Carolina coast.

The Seahawks went 72-28 overall in Siddle’s three years and advanced to the postseason all three campaigns, including the CIT (2015), NCAA (2016) and NCAA (2017).
