Siddle, 34, is making his fi fth coaching stop and fi rst as a head coach. He previ- ously served as an assistant coach at Hargrave Military Academy, Gardner-Webb, UNCW and NC State. Siddle becomes the 13th head coach in UNCW history. Siddle played for and coached with Keatts and served as interim head coach for the Seahawks in March of 2017 before joining his longtime mentor on the NC State bench in Raleigh. Siddle is a tireless recruiter and was tabbed the No. 4 recruiter in the country earlier this year. During his three-year stay at UNCW from 2014-17, Siddle helped the Seahawks return to prominence in the CAA, winning three regular season championships and two CAA Tournament crowns (2016, 2017). UNCW compiled a 72-28 record with three post-season berths in Siddle’s fi rst stop on the North Carolina coast. The Seahawks went 72-28 overall in Siddle’s three years and advanced to the postseason all three campaigns, including the CIT (2015), NCAA (2016) and NCAA (2017). He recruited fi ve All-CAA selections as the Seahawks went 48-14 in the The Siddle Profi le Born May 25, 1986 (Age 34) circuit. ("Mel") Gibson describes his career at UNCW and elsewhere in this visual oral history interview. A North Carolina native, Mr. Gibson played basketball in high school and earned a grant in aid to play at Western Carolina University. He graduated in 1963 and had the opportunity to play in the Pan American games. Mr. Gibson played professional basketball for a year and then turned to coaching. While coaching at Baptist College (Charleston, SC), Mr. Gibson met Coach Brooks, who recruited him to UNCW in 1972. After one year as the assistant coach, he became head basketball coach. Mr. Gibson discusses his coaching philosophy, his teaching philosophy (he taught in physical education and health throughout his career), and Mr. Brooks' leadership in getting UNCW a spot in the CAA. Mr. Gibson also reminisces about former players and colleagues. He stepped down from coaching in 1986, but continued as a faculty member until his retirement in 2000.
