The successor to 2008’s Oracular Spectacular and 2010 s Congratulations, MGMT finds Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser continuing to push themselves to expand the boundaries of modern pop music. Returning to Tarbox Road Studios to work with longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann (Co-producer and mixer of Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala), Andrew and Ben experimented with various in-studio writing processes, allowing the music to tell them where it wanted to go. The result is a diverse and powerful collection of 10 songs (including a cover of “Introspection” by 1960’s psych band Faine Jade) that directly mirrors the duo’s encompassing surrealist view of the everyday. Over the course of their last two albums, MGMT have shown themselves to be as comfortable crafting a solid hook as they are heading off into more psychedelic excursions, often bringing those two sides of themselves together to create an eclectic sound that often feels like the musings of a glam pop band on a peyote-fueled vision quest. After two exploratory albums, MGMT return with their eponymous third album, which finds them continuing to push their sound forward as they return to working with producer Dave Fridmann, who worked on the band’s debut, Oracular Spectacular. While Fridmann is definitely associated with a sense of spaciousness, thanks to his work with iconic acts like the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev, he’s also a producer who is more about capturing what MGMT are doing than making decisions for them, so while his sonic stamp could be heard on their earlier work, it was clear they weren’t quite making the most of the experience. Six years later, MGMT return to Tarbox Road Studios a more confident and self-assured band, and the difference is palpable. Like Congratulations, MGMT is an album that continues to eschew hooky singles for pop experimentation that isn’t afraid to stay melodic, at least initially. While the album feels daring all the way through, early tracks like “Alien Days” feel relatively straightforward, mining the ornate pop sound of their previous effort. As MGMT continues, though, an unraveling process starts to happen, with the songs becoming increasingly strange as the album progresses through its latter half. It’s in this section that the band makes the most of Fridmann’s talents as a producer and engineer, sending the songs into outer space with layers of reverb-drenched synths and crunchy electronics. Although it’s clear that their infectious, single-heavy debut was no accident, the more experimental aspect of MGMT seems to be their dominant side. While this might be bad news for radio DJs out there praying for another “Kids” or “Electric Feel,” it’s a blessing for music fans desperately waiting for a modern answer to pop experimenters like David Bowie and Sparks. Tracklist: 01 – Alien Days 02 – Cool Song No. 2 03 – Mystery Disease 04 – Introspection 05 – Your Life Is A Lie 06 – A Good Sadness 07 – Astro-Mancy 08 – I Love You Too, Death 09 – Plenty Of Girls In The Sea 10 – An Orphan Of Fortune. • MGMT: Little Dark Age
MGMT: Little Dark Age spectrumculture.com/2018/02/11/mgmt-little-dark-age-review/ Daniel Bromfield One imagines a pang of dread shooting through the members of MGMT as their debut album, Oracular Spectacular, turned 10 last month. For better or for worse, Oracular Spectacular is now a classic, and its three titanic hit singles—“Kids,” “Time to Pretend” and “Electric Feel”—show no signs of going away. Most bands would be pleased to have a legacy set in stone, but MGMT have spent the better part of the last decade trying to distance themselves from pop stardom and prove to the world—or to themselves— that they’re a serious experimental band. They’ve succeeded, sort of. Though most of the world will always know MGMT for their hits, we no longer have any safe expectations for the “next MGMT album,” and it makes perfect sense that they’re ditching the psych-poppet affectations to reposition themselves as compadres of Ariel Pink and John Maus. Little Dark Age, the duo’s long-gestating fourth album, casts them as graveyard goths whose madcap sense of humor barely keeps the bad vibes at bay. That it works is a testament to just how unpredictable this band has become in its experimental period. This feels like the logical endpoint of the band’s hermeticism. While Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser once presented themselves as cult leaders, with “the handshake under our tongue,” here they’re more like mad prophets broadcasting their ravings to the world from a dingy basement. The music is mid-fi, shrouded in filters that feel like the musical embodiment of the band’s misanthropy, and the dominant instrument isn’t synth or guitar but Matt Asti’s bass, which burbles nauseously out of the gloom.

  • One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and Their Fans
One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Annie Lyons TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin December 2020 __________________________________________ Renita Coleman Department of Journalism Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Hannah Lewis Department of Musicology Second Reader 2 ABSTRACT Author: Annie Lyons Title: One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Supervising Professors: Renita Coleman, Ph.D. Hannah Lewis, Ph.D. Boy bands have long been disparaged in music journalism settings, largely in part to their close association with hordes of screaming teenage and prepubescent girls. As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes.

MGMT tours in support of their latest release, Congratulations. MGMT MGMT has undoubtedly established themselves as one of the premier pop/rock bands of today, drawing on influences across decades of danceable music and continuing to push their own boundaries. Oracular Spectacular, MGMT's 2008 debut album, established the group's reputation on both sides of the Atlantic. The NME's year-end Best of 2008 poll named “Oracular Spectacular” the #1 Album of the Year with the album's singles holding down three of the year's Top 5 Singles spots with "Kids" as #1 Single of the Year, "Time To Pretend" at #4 and "Electric Feel" at #5. The NME went on to name "Time To Pretend" the #2 Single of the Decade. With Congratulations, MGMT offer an invitation to join the group in a new musical odyssey mirroring the psyches of the band's core duo, Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, inspired by their adventures on the frontiers of 21st century pop & roll consciousness. Produced by MGMT and Sonic Boom, Congratulations collaborating with a few of their personal idols and influences including album co-producer Sonic Boom (Pete Kember) and Royal Trux front-woman Jennifer Herrema, who contributed guest vocals.
