Director: Dr. George Munro Professor, Department of History Despite the attention historians have given to the Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras in Central Europe, few works have sought to understand these events' reverberations throughout the nineteenth century in a local or regional context. Taking the northern German city of Hamburg as its focal point, this study investigates the change in the urban political culture affected by eight years of Napoleonic occupation. In the process of replacing Hamburg's sprawling and archaic government with one characterized by Gallic centralization and rigor, the French introduced a new style of politics that relied on consistent, public, and martial presentations of its authority. This public presence was heightened not only by the implementation of modern policing techniques, but also by a series of choreographed, ideologically-charged public spectacles whose effectiveness relied on a clever manipulation and politicization of urban space. INTRODUCTION For several generations of historians, the Napoleonic Wars marked the origins of German nationalism while also sparking the process of political and economic modernization throughout Central Europe. During the nineteenth century, the period was integrated into a heroic- nationalist and Prusso-centric master narrative, as both historians and contemporaries regarded the wars of 1806 to 1815 as the direct precursors to the wars of 1864 to 1871 and the emergence of the German Kaiserreich. Scholarship of the post-World War II generation often marginalized or ignored experiences of other German states, incorporating them into a Prussian historical framework. No historian has framed the argument quite as provocatively as Thomas Nipperday, who introduced his study of nineteenth-century Germany with the infamous maxim: “In the beginning was Napoleon.”1 Yet it would not be until the 1990s that historians shifted their focus to the regional level, complicating our view of German Central Europe prior to unification.2 While this study of the north German city-state of Hamburg is fundamentally indebted to such research, it takes a somewhat different tack as it is not necessarily concerned with the emergence 1 Thomas Nipperday, Germany from Napoleon to Bismarck, 1800-1866, trans. by Daniel Nolan (Princeton, 1966), 1.     From Unification to Integration: The German North Sea Ports' absorption into Imperial Germany, 1866–1914 Henning Kuhlmann Submitted for the award of Master of Philosophy in History Cardiff University 2016 Summary This thesis concentrates on the economic integration of three principal German North Sea ports – Emden, Bremen and Hamburg – into the Bismarckian nation- state. Prior to the outbreak of the First World War, Emden, Hamburg and Bremen handled a major share of the German Empire’s total overseas trade. However, at the time of the foundation of the Kaiserreich, the cities’ roles within the Empire and the new German nation-state were not yet fully defined. Initially, Hamburg and Bremen insisted upon their traditional role as independent city-states and remained outside the Empire’s customs union. Emden, meanwhile, had welcomed outright annexation by Prussia in 1866. After centuries of economic stagnation, the city had great difficulties competing with Hamburg and Bremen and was hoping for Prussian support. This thesis examines how it was possible to integrate these port cities on an economic and on an underlying level of civic mentalities and local identities. Existing studies have often overlooked the importance that Bismarck attributed to the cultural or indeed the ideological re-alignment of Hamburg and Bremen. Therefore, this study will look at the way the people of Hamburg and Bremen traditionally defined their (liberal) identity and the way this changed during the 1870s and 1880s. It will also investigate the role of the acquisition of colonies during the process of Hamburg and Bremen’s accession. In Hamburg in particular, the agreement to join the customs union had a significant impact on the merchants’ stance on colonialism.

Scuola Normale was to be a subsidiary of École Normale Supérieure of Paris, granting 25 publicly funded places, for students in the humanities and sciences. Scuola Normale began operating in 1813 and only for one year, as in April 1814 Napoleon was forced to abdicate. “Normale” refers to the mission of the school, which was to train middle and high school teachers able to convey “norms” in a context where training teachers was connected to “forming” citizens loyal to the laws and the emperor. Scuola Normale and École Normale did not initially have the denomination “Superiore / Supérieure”. In France, after the institution of the “Écoles Normales primaries” in 1845, the School was denominated “École Normale Supérieure”. In 1846, the grand duke of Tuscany, Leopold III, established the “Scuola Normale Toscana”, also called the “ Scuola Normale of the Imperial Reign” - as it was then connected to the “Theoretical and Practical” Austro-Hungarian system – designed “to train teachers and masters for secondary schools”. After the Italian unifcation, the “Scuola Normale of the Kingdom of Italy” was formally established in 1862.

The landgraviate of Thuringia The Ludovingian dynasty reached its peak in 1040. The Wartburg Castle (built in 1067) was the symbol of the Ludovingian power. In 1131 Luis I. received the title of Landgrave (Earl). With this new political landgraviate groundwork, Thuringia became one of the most influential principalities. It was directly subordinated to the King and therefore had an analogous power to the traditional ducats of Bavaria, Saxony and Swabia. Moreover, the sons of the Landgraves were married to the aristocratic houses of the European elite (in 1221 the marriage between Luis I and Isabel of Hungary was consummated). Landgrave Hermann I. was a beloved patron of art. Under his government (1200-1217) the court of Thuringia was transformed into one of the most important centers for cultural life in Europe.

It is also part memoir, part impassioned response to the National Socialists’ ‘destruction of a civilization’. This breadth, though, should come as no surprise. For the book’s author, the late John Grenville, was himself a Holocaust survivor. Born and raised in Berlin, he escaped Nazi Germany through the Kindertransport scheme in 1939. Sadly, as he notes in the preface to the volume, this history may well ‘be the last’ from someone who personally ‘lived through the Nazi years’ (p. xiii). Crucially, however, this book is not just a reflection of personal memories, it is also a solid, scholarly account, based on over 30 years of archival research. Indeed, Grenville has brought to bear on the project his long experience as Professor of Modern History at the University of Birmingham and as editor of the Leo Baeck Institute Yearbook. The result of Grenville’s endeavours is a very readable and at times stimulating history of the Nazi regime’s gradual destruction of German-Jewish life. The book that Grenville has written, however, is one that is very different from that which might be imagined from the publisher’s title.
