DESCRIPTION

It is difficult to resist the fascination of this wonderful farm. The first historic documents relate to 1370 when the castle was involved in bitter disputes before being destroyed in 1395. Some years later the first reconstruction began, completed in the second half of the XVII century with the addition of the main villa annex.

A meeting place for Marianna Baccinetti, wife of Ettore Florenzi, and King Luigi I of Baviera, the farm was the scene of a tender friendship which lasted for more than forty years. The King would journey to Ascagnano every year especially to be with his beloved Marianna.

The property is composed of a nucleus of antique structures located on a suggestive plateau allowing it to dominate the whole of the upper Valle del Tevere. The farm, comprising the castle with seventeenth century villa annex, farm houses and farmsteads with land, a working farm business and

The zootechnical structures for horse breeding were created at the beginning of the seventies and are composed of various buildings used for services and accommodation, storage and 50 horse boxes. From 1972 up to today over 500 colts and foals were born, of which 90% have raced and 75% have won important victories. Starting with the male Ribercurt who won the second group of the Prix Du Kergolay at Deuville and the first group of the Gran Premio d'Italia and proceeding with the female Claire Valentine who won the 1976 Oaks at Milan, the most prestigious race for three year old females. Elgay joins them as winners, having triumphed at the 1978 Italian Derby for the first group.

In the following years Lina Cavalieri, Hitchocl, Holga, Daniela Umbra, Giannino Umbro, Helenio and many others were born winning Listed or Group races. In more recent times we remember Deep Sea, Stardan who won in , Sorella Luce, Davide Umbro and Spirit of Desert who won the Premio Parioli second group. The farm also raises show jumping horses such as Nord Bold, Merlino Mago and Costantino Re. In 2005 Amedeus Wolf won at Newmarket winning the Middle Park Stakes, becoming the first Italian horse in history to win group one race abroad at only two years of age.

The medieval castle extends for 800m2 and conserves its original architectural characteristics. The main villa is connected to the castle via underground tunnel and is in excellent condition. The internal environments are enriched with splendid frescoes and numerous works of art, of which an important and well catalogues collection of Etruscan relics and a room constructed by the artist Gerardo Dottori. The majority of the flooring , fixtures and architectural features are considered extremely precious and perfectly preserved from its seventeenth century origins.

The villa covers 2200m2 and is present over three levels. The ground floor is used during the day and is open to the public, composed of kitchen, large drawing rooms, library and study. The first floor the houses the sleeping area comprising the main bedrooms and bathrooms and a large sitting room from where we have direct access to the garden opposite to the castle as well as to the old stables. The second floor houses more bedrooms and the servants quarters.

In front of the entrance to the main villa, a small church is located together with a frescoed greenhouse which overlooks the Italian gardens. The park contains a plethora of secular trees, including oak, beach, cedar and redwood. A swimming pool, tennis court which doubles as a basket ball court, five-a-side football pitch, covered barbeque area, dressing rooms and stables complete the area. The remaining buildings (2000m2) located inside the park include guests quarters, custodians and servants quarters, cellars and storage spaces.

Perugia, the regional capital of Umbria is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy, with its five historic districts enclosed in an ancient Etruscan wall.

Despite the arrival and occupation of the Romans which destroyed a large part of the city, the Emperor Augustus ordered the city to be returned to its former splendour, and since then the city has been known as "Augusta Perusia".

To this day many of the historical features of the city are preserved, all enclosed in the outer defensive wall through which the city gates provide access, including the Arco di Augusto, Porta Sole, Porta della Mandorla, Porta Marzia, Porta Trasimeno and the Cornea or Porta di Sant'Ercolano.

The majority of the historic, artistic and urban features are dated to the medieval and Renaissance period.

The Piazza Grande (now known as Piazza IV Novembre) for example, has always been the centre point for normal life, politics and monuments. More recently the square has also been the central stage for the Umbria Jazz Festival which takes place at the beginning of July.

An undisputed symbol of the city is the Fontana Maggiore dating to the XIII century and designed by Fra' Bevignate of Perugia, a place where people can meet and relax.

The fountain is composed of two large marble basins and is overhung by a large bronze container. Another interesting place is the Palazzo dei Priori which is striking with its large portal upon which the statues of the Griffin and the Lion rest, symbols of the city.

Amongst the most impressive testimony to the early Etruscan presence of the city is the magnificent Etruscan Well or Pozzo Corbello, located close to the cathedral.

Constructed with an ingenious stone architrave system which to this day supports the ground level road system, the well is 35m deep and still harvests the ground water which seeps down through the aquifers.

Perugina is also the home for the ancient Studium Universitario dating to medieval times (1308) as well as being the city of chocolate.

The famous Eurochocolate festival held every October has helped affirm the city of the Perugina confectionary industry not only as a renowned confectionary centre of excellence but also as a cultural centre.
