The winners of the G1 Prince of Wales=s S., G1 Queen Anne S., G2 Norfolk S. and G1 Diamond Jubilee S. will all be awarded automatic AWin and You=re In@ berths into the 2018 Breeders= Cup at Churchill Downs Nov. 2 and Nov. 3. The June 19 Queen Anne, for older horses at a mile, is a qualifier for the GI Breeders= Cup Mile; the June 20 Prince of Wales=s S., for older horses at 10 furlongs, is a qualifier for the GI Longines Breeders= Cup Turf; the June 21 Norfolk, for 2-year- olds at five furlongs, will serve as a qualifier for the newly created Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint; and the June 23 Diamond Jubilee, a six-furlong dash for older horses, will be a qualifier for the GI Breeders= Cup Turf Sprint. SAN LUIS REY TRAINING CENTER REOPENS by Dan Ross AIt=s wonderful back there,@ said trainer Phil D=Amato=s assistant Linda Thrash, turning her eyes to the bright ochre red roofs of the barns behind her. AEverything=s cleaned, repaired, painted. It looks great. I=m really happy.@ We=re stood at the entrance to the San Luis Rey Training Center training track early on this bright Monday morning, surrounded by a wall of sunlight and color and life. Trees blanketed in leaves. Hillsides drenched in all shades of green. Flowers a labyrinth of reds, blues and yellows--a vastly different sight to that only four months before, when Thrash had been one of the many who fought through the black smoke and the flames and the searing heat in an effort to save the near 500 horses trapped there by the Lilac Fire that engulfed the facility that fateful December afternoon. In all, 46 horses perished. Martine Bellocq and Joe Herrick were hospitalized. Trainers, grooms, and hotwalkers watched helplessly as their lives and livelihoods disappeared into cinders and ash. Time, however, has a way of sweeping all before it, and time has certainly had a transformative effect on San Luis Rey. And this morning marked the re-commencement of training at San Luis Rey. Horses belonging to trainers D=Amato, Richard Baltas and Doug O=Neill trickled back in over the weekend--Saturday being the four-month anniversary of the tragedy, coincidentally--and the rest of the horses stabled temporarily at Del Mar will return this week. Before all horses can return to San Luis Rey, however, there=s still more work to do. Not that facility general manager Kevin Habell and his crew have been sitting idly by. AIt=s been a heck of a project,@ said Habell, about a seven-days-a-week work program now nearing its fourth month. They start between seven or eight o'clock in the morning. AAnd we go until it goes dark.@ On a tour of the facility, Habell showed me the former site of eight barns destroyed in the fire, where largely metal buildings had been engulfed by a white-heat so strong, it warped porcelain toilets in the bathrooms. AThe fire department said that that=s got to be 2500, 3000 degrees.     £6 MILLION PRIZE MONEY AT ROYAL ASCOT 2021 Tuesday 9th March 2021 Prize money for Royal Ascot 2021 is today announced at £6 million over the week – a 66% increase on the £3.61m offered in 2020. The Royal Meeting will take place from 15th to 19th June and the full order of running with race values for the extended programme announced in January is attached. The King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes, which takes place in July, will be run for £875,000 (2020: £400,000). Guy Henderson, Chief Executive Officer at Ascot Racecourse, said: “In 2020 we had hoped to offer record prize money of more than £8 million at the Royal Meeting. In the event the pandemic made that impossible and we have now spent nearly a year racing behind closed doors with trading income down 80%. This year’s prize money of £6 million represents 75% of what we had originally planned for 2020. “With restricted attendances in 2021 and pandemic insurance cover no longer available, the business will need to absorb a significant loss this year in order to deliver our wish to support the industry with the most prize money that we can prudently afford. Whilst Covid-19 has knocked back our long term financial trajectory by several years, our aim is to make the largest steps we can towards getting prize money levels back on track as soon as possible. “Without owners we would have no racing.     OVER £8 MILLION PRIZE MONEY ON OFFER AT ROYAL ASCOT 2020 3rd December 2019 Ascot Racecourse today announces that Royal Ascot 2020 will be run for a record £8,095,000, an increase of £765,000 on 2019 values. For the first time, the Royal Meeting will play host to two £1 million races; The Prince of Wales’s Stakes (from £750,000) and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (from £600,000). No race at Royal Ascot will be run for less than £95,000 in 2020 (£90,000 in 2019) and in total 16 of the 30 races have been the subject of increases. Total prize money at Ascot next year, excluding the industry owned QIPCO British Champions Day, will be £14.4m, an increase of £819,000 (Executive contribution 2020: £8.1m, 2019: £7.4m). This includes bringing the Longines Sagaro Stakes up from £60,000 to £80,000 to match the Commonwealth Cup Trial on Royal Ascot Trials Day. Ascot’s Prize Money of £14.4m in 2020 is an increase of 65% on the 2010 Prize Money of £8.7m. Of the prize money in 2010, £4.1m (47% of the total) was Executive Contribution. In 2020, with Executive Contribution of £8.1m (56% of the total), the growth in percentage terms is 96% from a decade ago. Guy Henderson, CEO, Ascot Racecourse, said: “Royal Ascot plays an important role for the industry in maintaining international investment in British racing.
