Nearly a century later, this iconic play has retained its place as one of the great American stage comedies of all time. Its lasting legacy stands as a testament to its unique DNA: part farce, part melodrama, with a healthy dose of romance thrown into the mix, The Front Page is at once a veneration and a reproof of the gritty, seductive world of Chicago journalism, firmly embedded in the freewheeling euphoria of the Roaring Twenties. According to playwrights (and former Chicago reporters) Charles MacArthur and Ben Hecht, the play allegedly found its genesis in two real-life events: a practical joke carried out on MacArthur as he was heading west on a train with his fiancée, and the escape and disappearance of the notorious gangster “Terrible” Tommy consuming the conflicted heart of a city O’Conner four days before his scheduled caught in the momentum of progress while execution at the Cook County Jail. celebrating the underdogs who were lost in its wake. J OHN F . A NDREWS OBE JOHN F. ANDREWS is an editor, educator, and cultural leader with wide experience as a writer, lecturer, consultant, and event producer. From 1974 to 1984 he enjoyed a decade as Director of Academic Programs at the FOLGER SHAKESPEARE LIBRARY. In that capacity he redesigned and augmented the scope and appeal of SHAKESPEARE QUARTERLY, supervised the Library’s book-publishing operation, and orchestrated a period of dynamic growth in the FOLGER INSTITUTE, a center for advanced studies in the Renaissance whose outreach he extended and whose consortium grew under his guidance from five co-sponsoring universities to twenty-two, with Duke, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, Rutgers, Virginia, and Yale among the additions. During his time at the Folger, Mr. Andrews also raised more than four million dollars in grant funds and helped organize and promote the library’s multifaceted eight- city touring exhibition, SHAKESPEARE: THE GLOBE AND THE WORLD, which opened in San Francisco in October 1979 and proceeded to popular engagements in Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and Washington. Between 1979 and 1985 Mr. Andrews chaired America’s National Advisory Panel for THE SHAKESPEARE PLAYS, the BBC/TIME-LIFE TELEVISION canon. He then became one of the creative principals for THE SHAKESPEARE HOUR, a fifteen-week, five-play PBS recasting of the original series, with brief documentary segments in each installment to illuminate key themes; these one-hour programs aired in the spring of 1986 with Walter Matthau as host and Morgan Bank and NEH as primary sponsors.

Mongrel Media Presents FALL A film by Terrance Odette (100 min., Canada, 2014) Language: English Distribution Publicity Bonne Smith Star PR 1028 Queen Street West Tel: 416-488-4436 Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M6J 1H6 Fax: 416-488-8438 Tel: 416-516-9775 Fax: 416-516-0651 E-mail: [email protected] E-mail: [email protected] www.mongrelmedia.com High res stills may be downloaded from http://www.mongrelmedia.com/Fall Fall – Synopsis Father Sam Ryan, (Michael Murphy), an aging Roman Catholic Priest living contently at a Niagara Falls parish, receives a letter forcing his complacent life into descent. The letter, from ‘Christopher’, confronts him about an incident that happened 40 years ago. Father Sam was a young, charismatic priest, serving a remote, Northern Ontario parish. Christopher was a 14 year-old adolescent, whom Sam mentored. The letter asks Father Sam for the truth: what did take place all those years ago? Were lines blurred or crossed? What choices were made? Forgiveness, redemption and sin are the dominant themes of FALL. All the characters whom Father Sam encounters – through his parish duties and from his suppressed past - force him into deeper reflection: ‘Chelsea’, a restless bride- to-be; ’Michael’, a repentant addict; ‘Reza’, a gay, Iranian grieving his recently- deceased mother; ‘Sheila’, Sam’s free-spirited, benevolent sister; and finally, ‘Catherine’, the shattered wife of enigmatic Christopher. Now haunted by his memories, for the first time in his life Sam is compelled to reconcile himself; more than as a Priest…as a man. Did a sexual encounter happen? Can a moral custodian of the faithful; a dispenser of God's grace, transcend his own FALL? FALL is at once intimate and remote - both revealing and concealing - richly filmed in wide-screen/anamorphic to capture the majestic power of the Niagara Falls of Sam’s present, in contrast to the vast, frozen Northern Ontario communities of Sam’s past.

  • Britain, Canada and the Arts -- Major International, Interdisciplinary Conference
H-Announce CFP: Britain, Canada and the Arts -- Major International, Interdisciplinary Conference Announcement published by Irene Morra on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 Type: Call for Papers Date: June 15, 2017 Location: United Kingdom Subject Fields: British History / Studies, Canadian History / Studies, Cultural History / Studies, Humanities, Theatre & Performance History / Studies Britain, Canada, and the Arts: Cultural Exchange as Post-war Renewal 15-17 June 2017 CALL FOR PAPERS Papers are invited for a major international, interdisciplinary conference to be held at Senate House, London, in collaboration with ENCAP (Cardiff University) and the University of Westminster. Coinciding with and celebrating the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, this conference will focus on the strong culture of artistic exchange, influence, and dialogue between Canada and Britain, with a particular but not exclusive emphasis on the decades after World War II. The immediate post-war decades saw both countries look to the arts and cultural institutions as a means to address and redress contemporary post-war realities. Central to the concerns of the moment was the increasing emergence of the United States as a dominant cultural as well as political power. In 1951, the Massey Commission gave formal voice in Canada to a growing instinct, amongst both artists and politicians, simultaneously to recognize a national tradition of cultural excellence and to encourage its development and perpetuation through national institutions. This moment complemented a similar post-war engagement with social and cultural renewal in Britain that was in many respects formalized through the establishment of the Arts Council of Great Britain. It was further developed in the founding of such cultural institutions as the Royal Opera, Sadler’s Wells Ballet, the Design Council and later the National Theatre, and in the diversity and expansion of television and film.

  • Acting Shakespeare a Roundtable Discussion with Artists from the Utah Shakespearean Festival’S 2007 Production of King Lear
97 ACTORS’ ROUNDTABLE Acting Shakespeare A Roundtable Discussion with Artists from the Utah Shakespearean Festival’s 2007 Production of King Lear Michael Flachmann Utah Shakespearean Festival Company Dramaturg Featuring: J. R. Sullivan (Director), Dan Kremer (King Lear), Carole Healey (Goneril), Anne Newhall (Regan), Shelly Gaza (Cordelia), Michael Connolly (Gloucester), James Newcomb (Kent), and Tim Casto (The Fool) lachmann: Although King Lear has always been popular in the twentieth century, we’ve recently seen an Funprecedented surge in productions of the play, with major mountings of the script during the past two years at the Denver Theatre Center, the Goodman, the Milwaukee Rep, the New York Shakespeare Festival with Kevin Kline, the Chicago Shakespeare Festival, BAM with Ian McKellen, and the Stratford Festival with Brian Bedford. Why such a renewed interest in the play at this particular time in our history. What special truths does the script have to teach us? What is it about this play that speaks so eloquently to us today? Jim, if I could start with you, sir? Sullivan: Of course. Thanks to everyone for coming to our festival and being here for this symposium. The critic Jan Kott said a generation ago that of all the plays Shakespeare wrote, this was the most shockingly contemporary. I don’t think he used the work “shocking,” but I think we would have to do so now in retrospect, and he compared it brilliantly to Beckett’s Endgame and Ionesco. There is a remarkable irony when you look at this wonderful creation of Shakespeare’s poetic Renaissance imagination four centuries ago in juxtaposition to the disturbing video clips we see nightly on CNN highlighting the results of personal and political miscalculation, barbarous torture, and human cruelty.
