Letter from the Editor Our pets are so precious to us aren’t they? They play a very important role in our lives and we just wouldn’t be the same without them. You may have heard me mention that we have a cat called Ginger who is 19 years old. He has led an exciting life, having grown up in Switzerland, but when my sister relocated back to the UK Ginger came to stay with us and, 3 years later, he is still here. You can see a photograph of Ginger on page 37. Natalie recently won a pet photoshoot with Mark Hewitson Photography and now we have amazing photos of Ginger to treasure forever.

It’s been too hot for both Ginger and me being held at the home of WWFC, these last few days. As I write we are Adams Park. The coronavirus outbreak has had a huge impact on our community. Before UK lockdown began, Heart of Bucks set up the Bucks Coronavirus Response Appeal (BCRA) to fund groups providing services and support to the local community. The focus of the BCRA was to fund emergency response activity, giving grants to charities, organisations and community groups helping to alleviate some of the negative impact of COVID-19 on the local area.

Recently our family bubble got together to celebrate a birthday by sharing some cocktails Alex, our Doorstep Bartender, provided service with a smile. The cocktails were nicely boxed and it was exciting to open them and tuck in. Not having any cocktail glasses ourselves we purchased a selection of affordable glasses from a local supermarket, we had ice in the freezer, the fruit bowl was brimming with a variety of tropical fruits so we were ready for a special birthday celebration. Pornstar Martini has always been one of our favourite cocktails, Alex’s creation tasted exactly as it should. It felt like we were on a fun night out and we could let our hair down. The Mai Tai was a very popular choice, it tasted sharp yet sweet with a lovely tropical flavour to finish off and the Cosmopolitan was perfect for the party. The Raspberry Margarita reminded us of relaxing holidays in the sunshine beside the sea. We would definitely order these again! Alex also offers classic cocktails such as daiquiris, margaritas and mojitos. He told us “This year due to Covid-19, after conversing with various friends about missing the bar scene and making drinks, the idea to bottle our own was born! So I hope you guys like what you see! We are always experimenting and looking at new recipes, if you have a favourite let us know, maybe it could be a new addition to the line up”. Doorstep Bartender offers free delivery within a certain radius. To plan your cocktail evening head to the website to order: https://doorstepbartender. co.uk/

6 | hiyabucks.com Cocktails in the safety of your own home Doorstep Bartender’s Alex Aber explains all …. Doorstep Bartender was created in 2019 after many years in the hospitality industry. I have worked in a variety of businesses, completed a degree in International Hospitality Management, and spent time abroad working in the industry. I have always wanted to run my own business, so I started working with local companies who motivated me to start my own venture. My experience, knowledge and curiosity has given me an insight into what guests enjoy and how best to accommodate their palates. I worked in a wine bar in Oxford under the tutelage of a Master of Wine and at the Botanist in Marlow for many years. I started running my own home based event’s company, creating cocktail experiences in people’s homes, whilst still working in the industry. Fast forward to this year, Covid 19 popped up, and the country went into lockdown with the hospitality industry grinding to a halt. I spent a lot of time thinking about cocktails and how I could add to my business in a different way. Whilst following the industry closely I noticed a lot of other businesses creating their own bottled cocktail serves, from top end bars to smaller ones around the country. With those businesses as motivation I wanted to create some of my own, and share some cocktail love with my own recipes. I revitalised my own brand and I’m now delivering my own cocktails within a 10 mile radius of Marlow, with future plans for national delivery. I am also connecting with a variety of local businesses and we are creating new ideas together. I also plan on working with local producers to obtain the finest premium ingredients to go into the cocktails. The menu is always evolving to keep it fresh and seasonal. As people begin to have more gatherings this is the perfect time to provide a new option for their events; with the added bonus that I can also supply event solutions if needed.

● 1 tbsp olive oil ● 100g bacon lardons/chopped mushrooms ● 3 eggs ● 50g parmesan cheese, finely grated ● 300g spaghetti ● salt and pepper

Put a pan of salted water over a high heat and bring to boil. In a frying pan, heat the oil over a medium heat and add the bacon lardons/mushrooms. Stir occasionally until golden. Whisk the eggs in a large bowl and add half of the cheese. Transfer the egg mix to a jug and season with salt and pepper. Cook the spaghetti in the boiling water until it’s soft throughout. Use a colander to drain the spaghetti and return it to the saucepan immediately. Add the lardons/mushrooms and the oil from the pan to the spaghetti. Then add the egg mix and stir through. The heat from the spaghetti will cook the egg. Serve with a sprinkle of the remaining cheese on top.

hiyabucks.com | 13 ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE by Katie Royals LITTLE SUDS SOAPS Soap has become almost clinical in recent months. With continual reminders to wash our hands to prevent the spread of infection, more than ever it has become a central, if a little boring, part in our lives. As it’s taking up such a large part of our lives, why not make it more interesting?

Julia, founder of -based Little Suds Soap, is on a mission to do just that. She has created an eco-friendly, plastic free company selling affordable but luxury soaps and shampoos. Each product is handcrafted by Julia herself, meaning she knows exactly what goes into each soap. The premise is simple. She sells handmade artisan soaps with “no faff”. She only uses pure, essential oils, which scent the room as well as the soaps. All products are 100 percent vegan and she only uses natural ingredients. Julia has created a formula which makes for a very creamy and rich soap, making it perfect for anyone who suffers from dry skin. My personal favourite is the Just Chillin’ soap stick, which you can order online for just £1.20, but I enjoyed all of the soaps in the 6-piece travel stick, each one scenting the room differently. The products are priced affordably to allow customers to try different products to find their favourite. Officially launched in September 2019, Little Suds Soap offers a range of different soaps and shampoos, from gift bundles to larger stand-alone soaps. She is now stocked in over 45 shops in the UK, including in Alphabet Soup in Great Missenden. Her soaps are also stocked in gift boxes distributed by eight different companies. And they make perfect gifts. They come in sustainable but stylish packaging, which make ideal gifts for any situation. There is a heart shaped range available, making the perfect gift to send to a loved one. Being compact, they are also handy for travelling. Toiletries for travelling so often come in single use plastic containers, creating substantial waste. Little Suds offer an environmentally friendly alternative which is still easily portable. The business is also starting to move into the hospitality market, supplying soaps to hotels, AirBnBs, B&Bs and campsites. Despite having a great range of wholesale clients, Julia still accepts and welcomes orders from individuals via her website, which will be delivered to your door.

16 | hiyabucks.com keeps the spirit alive with charity appeal and new format Teenage Scouts’ Activity Weekend

Explorer Scouts (boys and girls aged 14 to 17) from Aylesbury were among over 70 young people from across Buckinghamshire who spent 24 hours, without sleep, doing a range of activities. Gilwell 24 is an opportunity for Explorer Scouts to spend 24 hours doing non-stop activities. Thousands of young people from across the country usually attend this event, but with no face to face Scouting this was cancelled this year. Some of the adult volunteers in Buckinghamshire decided the young people should not miss out and organised a 24 hour virtual activity instead. The event started at 10.00am on Saturday morning and activities were demonstrated across Zoom and Facebook. The activities included drumming, silent disco, scavenger hunt, quiz, mocktails, bin bag fashion show, star gazing (where a Comet and the Space Station were seen), cooking and origami. One of those who participated, Edward Perry, said “B24 almost over, I have thoroughly enjoyed every bit and especially the group film, scavenger hunt and all the good food cooking. Great weekend overall.” Parent Mark Edwards said “Many thanks to the Buckinghamshire Explorer leaders for putting on such a wonderful lock down event. The young people really enjoyed all the events and it was great to see them making friends across the county. My favourite part was watching the teenagers interact with each other and with the adults, particularly when everyone was just chilling and chatting about all sorts of stuff.” The whole event was supported by Bucks Scout Radio who provided music throughout the event and also the music for the silent disco. Deputy Chief Commissioner for Scouts for the UK joined one of the Zoom calls and participated in the scavenger hunt and said, “One of the pleasures of this volunteering role during this time is the ability to drop in and spend time with amazing young people supported by brilliant adult leaders and volunteers doing amazing things in and around their home. Great to join the Bucks Explorer Scouts this afternoon on their scavenger hunt. A huge shout out to all of the leaders in the county. Well done all.”

hiyabucks.com | 17 Holtspur School & Pre-School

Hello and welcome to our first article of the new academic year; we look forward to keeping you informed about the events of Holtspur School and Pre-School. We start with bringing you our event of the summer; the Holtspur Scarecrow Trail. Many families and organisations busily prepared an amazing scarecrow for the trail. The event was very well supported by our local community and we hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did. Our personal favourites were Mr. McGregor and Stickman, whilst our boys liked Hook and Fireman Sam. Unfortunately our school scarecrows had a troublesome week; a fox took quite a liking to The Hungry Caterpillar's wellies and George! As well as the sly fox, Wally has now had to take permanent residence in a plant pot due to many tree related catastrophes! There were moments when we really did wonder where Wally was! A big thank you must go to Mrs Dexter who had the vision and enthusiasm to see the whole idea through to completion! We are already planning our scarecrows for next year - watch this space!

The staff at Holtspur School and Pre-School have all been busy preparing for the start of a new academic year, with colourful classes ready, different seating arrangements sorted and lots of enthusiasm evident. We really look forward to seeing our whole school back in September. Until next time …. Ms Baverstock and Mrs Van Baars

hiyabucks.com | 31 BUCKINGHAMSHIRE HOSPITALS TO RECEIVE £900,000 FOR WINTER FUNDING THIS YEAR

The MP for Chesham & Amersham, the Rt Hon Dame Cheryl Gillan MP, was “delighted” to hear that Buckinghamshire’s hospitals are to receive £900,000 to help them prepare for this winter.

NHS Trusts have been given a total of £300 million to upgrade their facilities and improve A&E capacity.

“The staff of our hospitals and NHS have met the many challenges posed by Covid-19 with tremendous dedication” said Dame Cheryl. “It’s also crucial that people should feel able to go to A&E or our hospitals when they need treatment and this will help put measures in place to keep people safe.”

Dame Cheryl has also given support to the initiatives by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Antibiotics, calling for further action to control drug- resistant infections. She has supported a letter to the Prime Minister from the group asking him to appoint a UK government minister with specific responsibilities on this issue and on pandemic prevention.

“My late husband, Jack, died of pneumonia which was antibiotic-resistant,” said Dame Cheryl “so I am determined to support this initiative which is backed by a cross-party group of MPs and members of the House of Lords.”

GREAT BRITISH SEPTEMBER CLEAN 11th-27th September 2020

Buckinghamshire Council has pledged to support this year’s Great British September Clean, a campaign run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. The campaign, usually known as the Great British Spring Clean, was postponed in March due to Coronavirus. Over 600,000 people countrywide have promised to give up their time and take action to clean up Britain’s streets, parks and beaches. Last year the former district councils who now work together as , supported 63 events organised by parish councils, community groups and environmental groups involving over 1100 volunteers who together collected more than 2500 bags of rubbish! The Waste and Street Scene teams are keen to encourage local initiatives and help to keep communities litter-free by lending long-handled litter picks (subject to availability) and providing rubbish sacks. We’ll also provide free collection of the bagged litter once you’ve finished, but this needs to be arranged prior to the litter pick so that we can agree a collection point. Show your support for the Great British September Clean by organising a private clean up with up to five other family and friends or do your own individual clean up where you can give as little as 15 minutes to the campaign. Buckinghamshire Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, Bill Chapple OBE said: “As lockdown eases many of us have taken to the great outdoors and unfortunately this has led to an increase of litter, not just in Buckinghamshire but right across the country. “According to a Keep Britain Tidy survey in 2018 to 2019 local authorities spent £698,819,000 on street cleansing; an astonishing amount of money which would be better spent elsewhere. “I hope that in years to come we no longer have to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds simply putting people's rubbish in the bin for them. The easiest solution is for people to stop littering, take their rubbish home and recycle it, or use the bins provided. For every person that disposes of their litter responsibly I would like to say thank you.”

40 | hiyabucks.com Forms for requesting equipment will be on the Waste pages on our website www.buckinghamshire.gov.uk You can find out more about the national campaign, sign up and register your clean up at www.keepbritaintidy.org/home
