If Every DJ in My Position Were to Rest on Their Laurels, Then the Whole Industry Would Be Fucked “If every DJ in my position were to rest on their laurels, then the whole industry would be fucked. In fact, that’s the reason the industry IS fucked, because DJs are resting on their laurels.” RENEGADE MASTERJackmaster has hit the big league in recent times. The DJ who started out in a local Glaswegian bar has now made a name for himself worldwide, yet with those international tours has come assorted pressures and temptations. DJ Mag follows the Numbers boss from Glasgow to Glasto to hear about his unstoppable rise... Words: ADAM SAVILLE Pics: BRIAN SWEENEY & SARAH GINN 026 djmag.com 026 djmag.com djmag.com 027 Untitled-1 1 13/07/2017 16:32 bring all my dates here,” Jack Revill Jackmaster & Eats Everything announces with a cheeky grin and glint in his eye as he steps into his favourite Glasgow bar, in Fin- nieston, just a few blocks from the Numbers office. Obviously, we’re flattered. Ordering a pint — at 2pm on a Wednesday — we’re both trying to remember the last time we’d bumped into one another. On a BA flight back “Ifrom Brazil, this reporter remembers. Jack had just been booked to play during carnival in Warung’s breathtaking main room. An impromptu b2b with Maceo Plex only lasted a couple of tunes until management (not his) intervened, perhaps fearing what affect one of dance music’s most eclectic and energetic selectors would have on the Ellum Audio boss’ tidy prog-techno set. The point is, Jack will play with pretty much any- one he respects as a DJ — he just loves DJing. “I try not to be too snobby about it, I’ve always re- ally disliked the snobbery about dance music, this holier-than-thou kind of thing,” he says when asked about the company he keeps. “I am more picky now than I used to be about what line-ups I’m on, but I’ve always been of the mindset that music is for everyone, it’s easy to get caught up in this cultural snobbery. I might be on a line-up one day with the so-called ‘cooler DJs’ and the next one might be with Armand Van Helden…” This correspondent last interviewed Jack three years ago in a tropical hotel garden just off Collins Avenue during Miami Music Week. He’d just slept through probably the most important gig of the trip, Damian Lazarus’ all-star Get Lost party. It was a time when things were really Jackmaster & Skream kicking off for the loveable Glaswegian, he’d only recently picked up a marquee 12-week residency Jack gets his Best DJ Award from Idris Elba series at London’s XOYO and later that year he won the coveted Best DJ gong at our annual Best Of British Awards (four years after scooping the Best Breakthrough Award), following in the same footsteps as Eats Everything, Andy C and, more recently, DJ EZ. At the time he told us: “I don’t think I’ll ever see myself as part of the ‘big league’ and I’m not necessarily looking to be either, because I find when people start thinking like that, they suffer from it and start to compro- mise their vision.” TOP OF THE LEAGUE These days, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for him to deny his status as one of the UK’s top-level DJs, yet there’s still no sign of him losing sight of his philosophy. “I grew as a DJ very organically,” he asserts as we sip pints two-and-a-half-years later in Glasgow. “I took on management because I couldn’t deal with everything that was going on, so I needed some help, but it wasn’t like I Two years ago he even found himself playing of younger ravers, sure, but not a music policy wanted to be taken on by management because b2b2b2b as part of J.E.S.u.S, a DJ-super-group aligned to Jack’s freestyle approach to rapid-fire I wanted to be the biggest DJ in the world, or alongside Eats, Seth and Skream, which sold out genre selection; an ethos picked up from his days whatever…” large venues in places like Miami and Ibiza better in Glasgow attending Optimo’s weekly Sunday Now, however, it’s indisputable — because of the than it worked as a concept; its too-many-cooks party at Sub Club — or from Diplo’s early sets, line-ups he’s appearing on and the crew he runs approach at times proving slightly jumbled or which drew upon everything from Detroit electro with — that Jack’s ball automatically drops into incongruent, their disparate styles occasionally to favela-funk to Aphex Twin. the seeded pot when it comes to the World Cup of sounding a bit clunky. “People like Optimo have never been about house and techno DJs these days. • VOLBEAT Intl Biog 7 2010
Release 13 September 2010, Vertigo Volbeat are sick and tired of music purists wagging their finger at them. They refuse to be confined to the pigeonhole of a specific genre but throw off all fetters intended to keep them on the ground. In the past four years, this thoroughly honest attitude has made the four musicians from Denmark one of the hottest acts on the rock scene. Sold-out venues everywhere, celebrated festival appearances at the Rock am Ring festival, during the Sonisphere Festival Tour, and opening for Metallica and AC/DC – and now they’re about to release their latest album “Beyond Hell/Above Heaven”. 13 September will see the arrival of the 13-track recording, and as they did on their previous four releases, the band has succeeded again in combing the sound of the Fifties with that metal flair. If you were to draw a picture of Volbeat’s sound, it would feature Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Metallica – all of them peacefully united, cool drink in hand. “Beyond Hell/Above Heaven” is a perfect mix of heavy riffs, country coolness and rockabilly hip swing. The result makes not only the heart of a headbanger, but also that of a quiff wearer beat faster. Fans of anthemnic oeuvres are likely to press the Repeat button to listen to “Fallen” again, those more into quiet sounds will love “Heaven Nor Hell”, while up-tempo buffs will get down to business listening to “A Warrior's Call”. To cut a long story short: Volbeat have refined their highly original mix of passionate riffs and haunting melodies even more, getting straight to the point.

Another top-40 single, Daddy-O featuring Shaznay Lewis, peaked at number 32 in 2008. Wideboys compose and produce many of their own productions, especially in favor of a 12-inch vinyl format for club DJs. In 1998, they began producing dance remixes of songs by other artists, which led to fame in 2000 for two remixes featuring Craig David on vocals: Re-Rewind and Woman Trouble, both from Artful Dodger. With this success, they began remixing songs by more famous artists such as Kylie Minogue, Rihanna, Girls Aloud, Tayo Cruz and Pussycat Dolls. • Like Musical Theatre and Scripted Television, Jazz and Hip-Hop Are Uniquely, Undeniably North American Art Forms
Like musical theatre and scripted television, jazz and hip-hop are uniquely, undeniably North American art forms. Though the latter genre was born out of funk and disco in the late 1970s, many of its landmark artists embody the ethos of jazz: loose, visceral, instinctive. Some hip-hop acts--A Tribe Called Quest, or more recently Kendrick Lamar--have successfully repurposed jazz, but the older genre has seldom made successful inroads into new generations of rap fans. And that's what makes BADBADNOTGOOD, the four-piece, Toronto-bred jazz outfit that has melded jazz and instrumental hip-hop into something elusive, something altogether their own, so unique. On their latest full-length effort, IV (due out via Innovative Leisure on July 8th), BBNG decide to expand their universe, which was already one of the most compelling, labyrinthine worlds in pop music today. Saxophonist Leland Whitty, a long-time collaborator, joins Chester Hansen, Matthew Tavares, and Alexander Sowinski on a full-time basis; for the first time, guest vocalists are welcomed into the fold. Some artists find collaboration stressful and cluttering, but BBNG simply seems freer to chase down creative rabbit holes than ever before. The effect is apparent immediately. See "Lavender," a collaboration with the Montreal-based producer Kaytranada, which pairs delicate, skittering production with a punishing low end. Or take the virtuosic closer, which underscores superb performances by Whitty and Tavares with a grand swell of strings. On "Hyssop of Love," upstart Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins moves languidly, stretching out taunts ("I heard your plug was drrrrry") before he snaps upright ("Never needed no dollars to prove worth").

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

MARTIN GARCIA (DJ Set ) Since his beginnings as a professional DJ, Martin Garcia ’s artistic evolution was mainly lead by the British dance music industry, which he slowly incorporated and adapted to the local scene. From that moment on, he’s played many times alongside Sasha , Nick Warren , Jimmy Van M . and Danny Howells , among other artists. A smooth m ixing technique and the details of his sound selections have gained him a huge recognition from the great number of progressive house fans along Argentina and Latin America. A success he’s also achieved as a producer, either individually or together as a p owerful duo with Hernan Cattaneo , releasing on labels such as Perfecto , Shinichi and Bedrock . In 2005 Martin was the first guest DJ at London's Kiss FM and he entered number 50 at DJ Mag 's ranking.
