  • Teaching Skills with Children's Literature As Mentor Text Presented at TLA 2012
Teaching Skills with Children's Literature as Mentor Text Presented at TLA 2012 List compiled by: Michelle Faught, Aldine ISD, Sheri McDonald, Conroe ISD, Sally Rasch, Aldine ISD, Jessica Scheller, Aldine ISD. April 2012 2 Enhancing the Curriculum with Children’s Literature Children’s literature is valuable in the classroom for numerous instructional purposes across grade levels and subject areas. The purpose of this bibliography is to assist educators in selecting books for students or teachers that meet a variety of curriculum needs. In creating this handout, book titles have been listed under a skill category most representative of the picture book’s story line and the author’s strengths. Many times books will meet the requirements of additional objectives of subject areas. Summaries have been included to describe the stories, and often were taken directly from the CIP information. Please note that you may find some of these titles out of print or difficult to locate. The handout is a guide that will hopefully help all libraries/schools with current and/or dated collections. To assist in your lesson planning, a subjective rating system was given for each book: “A” for all ages, “Y for younger students, and “O” for older students. Choose books from the list that you will feel comfortable reading to your students. Remember that not every story time needs to be a teachable moment, so you may choose to use some of the books listed for pure enjoyment. The benefits of using children’s picture books in the instructional setting are endless. The interesting formats of children’s picture books can be an excellent source of information, help students to understand vocabulary words in different contest areas, motivate students to learn, and provide models for research and writing.

Graeme Base I was born in England in 1958, but have lived in Australia since I was a kid. I always wanted to be an artist and studied graphic design at Swinburne College of Technology then worked for two unhappy years in a string of design studios before concluding that the world of advertising was not for me. So I decided to be a rockstar instead and formed a band called Rikitikitavi. During this time I also wrote and illustrated my first picture book, My Grandma Lived in Gooligulch (pub. 1983). Three years later Animalia came out – the book which turned a hobby into a career and is still the most popular title I have published. I've tried to stay involved in music over the years, composing an orchestral version of another book, The Sign of the Seahorse, which was performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2001 – an amazing experience! I've written musical stage adaptations of My Grandma Lived in Gooligulch and Jungle Drums and also co-wrote the theme for the animated TV series Animalia with Yuri Worontschak. My most recent picture book is Enigma, published by Penguin in October 2008. There was also a large format book entitled The Art of Graeme Base by Julie Watts, also published in 2008. I live and work in Melbourne with Robyn (she's an artist too) and our three teenage kids. Website: www. graemebase.com Author / Illustrator Questionaire My earliest memory is …..falling on a lump of coal as I tottered down the side of the house and cutting my knee (I still have the scar).

The Journal of Public Space ISSN 2206-9658 2019 | Vol. 4 n. 3 https://www.journalpublicspace.org The Long Game Dan Goronszy [email protected] Abstract The Long Game explores one artwork, The Care Taker, iterated across multiple sites, as a slow and gentle resistance to current divisive political discourses in Australia. By placing a familiar domestic set in public spaces and asking participants to reveal something personal about themselves, the installation places a sense of intimacy and care in public places. Based in Social Acupuncture theory (O’Donnell, 2006) a site responsive practice produces iterations adapted to place, to engage diverse social and cultural audiences in suburban Australia. Using care, kindness and generosity as the foundations of each iteration, the artist considers how gentle transgression or activation of public space can open and connect strangers to each other, and hopefully inspire empathy and kindness which over time may contribute to social change. teacher notes The Last King of Angkor Wat Written and Illustrated by Graeme Base • Leadership • Making good choices • Nature and animals • Ancient Cambodia Synopsis We meet four very diff erent animals in the jungle, amid the ruins of the hauntingly beautiful Angkor Wat. Tiger, Gibbon, Water Buff alo and Gecko are discussing who among them would make the greatest king. Tiger believes his strength would make him a fi ne king, but Gibbon values his own compassion above Tiger’s strength. Water buff alo points out he never gives up, and kings need to be resilient. Little gecko proclaims that he is a great warrior, and kings must be fearless in battle. Suddenly, a mysterious elephant appears, pointing to the ruins of a temple on the hill. He explains that the animals must journey to the temple if they want to see who is worthy of being king. The journey that follows tests each of the four animals to their limits—revealing hidden truths and the great wisdom of the elephant as all is revealed at the top. Will any of them be good enough? About the Author Graeme Base is one of the world’s most loved and celebrated creators of children’s picture books.
