April 2012 2 Enhancing the Curriculum with Children’s Literature Children’s literature is valuable in the classroom for numerous instructional purposes across grade levels and subject areas. The purpose of this bibliography is to assist educators in selecting books for students or teachers that meet a variety of curriculum needs. In creating this handout, book titles have been listed under a skill category most representative of the picture book’s story line and the author’s strengths. Many times books will meet the requirements of additional objectives of subject areas. Summaries have been included to describe the stories, and often were taken directly from the CIP information. Please note that you may find some of these titles out of print or difficult to locate. The handout is a guide that will hopefully help all libraries/schools with current and/or dated collections. To assist in your lesson planning, a subjective rating system was given for each book: “A” for all ages, “Y for younger students, and “O” for older students. Choose books from the list that you will feel comfortable reading to your students. Remember that not every story time needs to be a teachable moment, so you may choose to use some of the books listed for pure enjoyment. The benefits of using children’s picture books in the instructional setting are endless. The interesting formats of children’s picture books can be an excellent source of information, help students to understand vocabulary words in different contest areas, motivate students to learn, and provide models for research and writing.

teacher notes The Last King of Angkor Wat Written and Illustrated by Graeme Base • Leadership • Making good choices • Nature and animals • Ancient Cambodia Synopsis We meet four very diff erent animals in the jungle, amid the ruins of the hauntingly beautiful Angkor Wat. Tiger, Gibbon, Water Buff alo and Gecko are discussing who among them would make the greatest king. Tiger believes his strength would make him a fi ne king, but Gibbon values his own compassion above Tiger’s strength. Water buff alo points out he never gives up, and kings need to be resilient. Little gecko proclaims that he is a great warrior, and kings must be fearless in battle. Suddenly, a mysterious elephant appears, pointing to the ruins of a temple on the hill. He explains that the animals must journey to the temple if they want to see who is worthy of being king. The journey that follows tests each of the four animals to their limits—revealing hidden truths and the great wisdom of the elephant as all is revealed at the top. Will any of them be good enough? About the Author Graeme Base is one of the world’s most loved and celebrated creators of children’s picture books. Graeme was born in England but came to Melbourne in 1966 and still lives in this vibrant Australian city with his wife and three children. Before Graeme wrote and illustrated his fi rst picture book in 1983, My Grandma Lived in Gooligulch, he worked in a string of advertising jobs as a designer, followed by a few years rocking out in a band called Rikitikitavi.

Information about our Wonderful Australian Authors Graeme Base is one of the world's leading creators of picture books. His alphabet book Animalia, received international acclaim when it was first published in 1986, and has achieved classic status with worldwide sales approaching three million copies. It has now inspired an animated TV series. Other favourites by Graeme Base include The Eleventh Hour, My Grandma Lived in Gooligulch, The Sign of the Seahorse, The Discovery of Dragons, The Worst Band in the Universe, The Waterhole (and The Waterhole Board Book), Jungle Drums and Uno's Garden. In 2007 this last title featured in six major awards and was winner of three: Speech Pathology Book of the Year, younger readers; The Green Earth Book, USA; The Wilderness Society Environment Award. ‘The Shark Caller’ and ‘The Dog with Seven Names’ and ‘Crafting Animal Characters in Fiction for Young Readers’ Dianne Wolfer Student number 10173725 Dip.Ed. (Melbourne State College, 1982) MA (Creative Writing) (University of Western Australia, 2005) This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia School of Humanities (English and Cultural Studies) 2017 Abstract The fiction component of this thesis consists of two novels, The Dog with Seven Names and The Shark Caller. These works are linked by their usage of animal characters and their exploration of social themes. The Dog with Seven Names is a work of historical fiction for a young readership of 9-12 years; it uses an animal viewpoint to explore the impact of war upon north-western Australia 1939-1943. The Shark Caller is a contemporary cross-cultural quest-fantasy for a young readership of 10-14 years; it explores environmental issues set in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea. Shark involves human protagonists who become embroiled in a fantasy scenario involving confrontation with undersea creatures; Dog uses an animal to narrate a sequence of events in close parallel with researched history of the period. In this way each novella could be said to work variations upon a clutch of thematic and technical concerns with animal portrayals (of differing kinds) presenting a major creative challenge in each case. The accompanying exegesis, “Crafting Animal Characters in Fiction for Young Readers”, explores my own authorial practice in the context of a discussion based on a wider survey of exemplar Australian children’s titles featuring animal characters.
