PREP FOOTBALL Cooper excited for challenge Head coach spent last 2 seasons at Appalachian

By JOHNATHAN BENTLEY Eagle Sports Editor

CORNER — Jon Cooper was ready for a challenge. Cooper has had success coaching at smaller schools before taking over his new role as the Corner High School head football coach. In six years, Cooper has guided his teams to the playoffs four times. He comes to Corner from Class 1A Appala- chian. He coached the Eagles for the last two years and also had stops at Class 3A Slocomb (2013- 15) and 1A Kinston (2017). “I was at a very, very good place last year. You can’t ask for better people, but this is a step up in division. You try to challenge yourself a little bit,” said Cooper, who was impressed with everything about the Corner job. “It’s a great community. It’s a great opportunity. They’ve got great facilities and hard-working kids.” Cooper, 38, was an All-State offensive lineman at Rob- ert E. Lee in Montgomery before playing collegiately at West Alabama. He is Corner’s fourth head football coach in the last five years. Rusty Rouse was the interim coach last year. He returns to his defensive coordinator role for the 2021 season. Jason Doss is the offensive coordinator. Cooper will field a young team this season. “We’ve got good numbers, right at 68 kids. We’ve got 44 freshman and sophomores. We are very, very young. Two- third of our team are underclassmen, but we’ve got a good core of older kids, too. We’ve got great skill players in the junior and seniors classes but we have a lack depth on the offensive and defensive lines so we are going to have to play some sophomores.” Among the seniors returning are offensive lineman Jar- rett Partridge, who is moving from center to right tackle, tight end Trey Ward and linebackers Abram Tavel and Ethan Muncher. JASPER’S TRINITY EPPS SIGNS WITH BEVILL STATE BRYANT-SABAN Saban’s process puts Alabama back on top This is the third in a series of four stories on Bear Bryant and Nick Saban In January 2007, Alabama had long Jeffery since been removed from the national Winborne championship picture, put under NCAA sanctions and relegated to road games at Hawaii as a consolation prize while under a bowl ban. Now legendary athletic director Mal Moore had fired Mike Shula after four seasons and was determined to get one man, Nick Saban. One problem, Saban was in his second year as the head coach of the NFL’s Dolphins. But, in yet another now folklore-level story in the Tide’s history, Moore knew what he wanted and went after it. He flew to Miami to meet with Saban, not even having an appointment to do so. As we all know, Saban accepted the job and in his first press conference as head coach he set the stage for what to Daily Mountain Eagle - Ron Harris expect from his Alabama teams. “I think everybody should take the attitude that we’re Jasper High School’s Trinity Epps signed with Bevill State Community College on Tuesday working to be a champion, that we want to be a champion at the high school.
