Surname First Name Gender Date of first Date of last Location Role Location Role First known job Source(s) Notes known known title recording recording Santi Paul Male 1825 1838 Traveling Multiple Attendant Courier C/16: Accounts of Michal Hall and Thomas Fletcher The Duke described Santi as 'a 1794, 1796-17975: Household Accounts for very handsome and picturesque Devonshire, Chiswick, Chatsworth and Brighton, person, with clever wicked 1824-46, 51; Devonshire House Servants, 1825; eyes'. He travelled abroad with P/9; CS2/3967/1-5; CS6/3025 both the 6th Duke and with Louisa Cavendish. Santi had a weakness for gambling, and in 1836 he wrote to the Duke admitting to having stolen some of the housekeeping money to feed his habit. He told the Duke he intended to commit suicide, and that it was the fault of Meynell (the valet) and Ridgway (the steward). The Duke paid off Santi's gambling debts but was forced to dismiss him two years later, in 1838, probably again for gambling. Despite his dismissal, Paul Santi and his daughter Louise were paid generous pensions for many years after his employment.

Surname First Name Gender Date of first Date of last Location Role Location Role First known job Source(s) Notes known known title recording recording Wilson William Male c.1840 1851 Chatsworth Garden Gardener Jr Gardener DF33/5: correspdence of Ann Wilson of edensor William Wilson was born in 1840s; DE/CH/6/1/23 List of workers and foremen; Beeley in 1816. He is therefore in 1841 Census for Edensor the minority of nineteenth-century gardeners at Chatsworth who were born on the estate. Following the remodelling of Edensor he moved there with his mother, Elizabeth, and wife, Ann. He probably began working in the gardens in the 1830s, where he became friends with John Milner. Unfortunately, William suffered from ill health. In the 1840s he was sent away twice to Southport, by Joseph Paxton, to bathe in the sea and recover from his health problems. Paxton paid for his expenses for these trips. In 1845 he was elected a councilman of the Edensor Club, which organised feasts and other activities for the local men. Sadly, William died in 1851, aged only 35. When William died he left his wife Ann to look after their four children: Julia, Edmund, Elizabeth and Alfred.

Wilson Edmund Male 1868 Hardwick Garden Gardener Gardener DF33/5 Edmund Wilson was the son of William Wilson. There is one letter written by him in DF33/5, but he is mentioned frequently by his mother Ann. In the 1870s Edmund moved to be head gardener at Hardwick Hall, where he remained for at least 50 years.
