“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life’” (John 8:12). Jesus is the Light of the World, the light that shines in the darkness that the darkness has not overcome (cf. John 1:5). In the Old Testament, speaks of the Israelites being called to be a light to the nations. Israel was chosen by God for the salvation of the world. They were called to be a kingdom of priests; the firstborn son in the family of God. In the New Testament, all of Christ’s disciples are called to do this— be the light in the world to those who have not heard the Good News. But we cannot be the light ourselves. All the light in the world that we shine is only through our union and imitation of Christ. He is the source of all the light in the world, and we only shine when we reflect Him. For St. John, light is compared to truth, righteousness, purity, holiness and understanding, while darkness is symbolic of lies, evil, worldliness, sinfulness and blindness. All these good things come from Jesus, the Light of the World; by His grace and through His revelation we have understanding of the truth, and a perfectly righteous man to imitate. When we imitate Him and reflect His light we do our small part to cast out the darkness that creeps across this world.

The sign connected with Jesus as the Light of the World is the healing of the man blind from birth. “‘We must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day; night comes, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.’ As he said this, he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and anointed the man’s eyes with the clay, saying to him, ‘Go, wash in the pool of Silo′am’ (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing” (John 9: 4-7). This is actually the second to last of the seven signs our Lord performs. Jesus, the Light of the World, works this miracle by physically healing the blind man. But spiritually we are all like this man; born blind, blundering around in a dark, dangerous world in desperate need of help. Jesus brings us the light to illuminate the path on which we can follow Him to salvation. The Sacrament linked to this I AM statement and sign is Baptism. The man in the sign was born blind, but more importantly he was born with, like we all are, Original Sin. The light that was in us before and Eve’s Fall is restored at our Baptism, and again we can see the world through the light of God. Jesus heals the man in the story by making clay by spitting on dust and rubbing it on the man’s eyes before telling him to go wash in the pool of Silo’am. In ancient Hebrew belief, Adam was made from the dust of the ground but the dust was formed and held together by what they called the divine spittle. So Jesus bringing sight to the blind man with dust and spittle, is a kind of recreation of what He did when God first made man. And the pool of Silo’am, as St. John mentions, is Hebrew for sent, which is fitting since after we are washed of Original Sin at Baptism we are sent out into the world to preach the Gospel. IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become saints John’s Gospel tells us that JESUS IS OUR LIGHT Color the picture of Jesus curing the blind man: Signs of Jesus: JESUS HELPS US SEE

John’s Gospel uses Signs and “I Am” statements to SHOW us that Jesus is God. Unlike the other three synoptic Gospels, which tell us the Good News, John SHOWS us the Good News!

“The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went there and washed and was able to see.” John 6:11

Jesus was passing the pool of Siloam when He encountered a man who was blind from birth. It was the Jewish understanding that this man’s blindness was the consequence of his, or his parent’s sin. Jesus took pity on the man and opened his eyes. By using both Je- sus’ divine breath and the help of the earth, the man could see. He knew he was healed by the Messiah!

Jesus also uses this moment to teach the Pharisees about seeing the Kingdom of God. While they saw Jesus as breaking the Law of , Jesus hopes to help them see deeper into the love of God. Then Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind.” John 6:39.

Jesus can help all of us to see God’s truth--when we look to Him first, we see His light in the world! SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, February 28: St. Oswald—Bishop St. Oswald was born in England during the early 10th century. He received his education from his uncle, Archbishop Odo, residing with him in Fleury, . After being ordained to the priesthood, Oswald returned to his native England where he was made Bishop of Worces- ter in 962. When he was an adult, Charles took part in a crusade to the Holy Land with his grandfather. In 1119 he became king. Charles worked hard to pro- mote peace and fought against price gouging during a famine. This effort led to Charles acquiring power- ful enemies who killed him while he was in prayer at St. Donatian’s church on March 2, 1127.

Wednesday, March 3: St. Teresa Eustochio Verzeri— St. Teresa was born in Bergamo, on July 31, 1801. She received her education at home and was under the spiritual direction of Fr. Giuseppe Benaglio. She became a Benedictine nun and resided at the monastery of St. Grata where she was responsible for the education of young girls. With the help of Fr. Benaglio, Teresa founded the Institute of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on February 8, 1831. This new order operated orphanages and provided care for the sick and elderly. Thursday, March 4: St. Lucius I—Pope Pope St. Lucius I was born sometime during the late second to early third century in Rome. Fol- lowing the death of Pope St. Cornelius, who passed away while in exile during the persecutions of Emperor Gallus, Lucius was elected to the papacy on June 25, 253. Shortly after assuming the Chair of St. Peter, Gallus had Lucius exiled as well. Lucius was allowed to return to Rome during the reign of Emperor Valerian. During his brief 18-month papacy, Lucius is known for his efforts to allow penitent individuals to return to the Church and receive the Sacraments. Friday, March 5: St. Gerasimus of the Jordan— and Hermit St. Gerasimus was born in , Asia Minor sometime during the fifth century. He la- bored as a merchant, but decided to become a hermit after visiting hermitages in . After briefly falling into heresy, Gerasimus became a follower of St. Euthymius. He then traveled to in Israel where he founded his own community which grew to 70 her- mits. They lived very simply in small cells without doors and slept on hard mats.

Saturday, March 6: St. Colette—Virgin St. Colette was born on January 13, 1381 at Corby Abbey in Picardy, France. She became an orphan at the age of 17, and gave away her inheritance to the poor. Colette then pursued a religious vocation by becoming a Franciscan Tertiary. In 1406, she experienced a vision telling her to reform the Poor Claires, so she left the Franciscans and joined the Poor Claires. With the permission of Pope Benedict XIII, she set out on reforming the order and reintroducing strict disciplines regarding money and fast- ing. During her life, she reformed 17 convents. STEWARDSHIP OF OUR BECOME A PARISHIONER TREASURES Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Conformation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain minimum re- quirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how we look upon them in relation to parish membership.
