Since the historical portion of this disserta­ tion must be suitable for and directed at the school teacher and his pupils, it emphasizes secondary works. Because there are numerous scholarly books on each topic in this study and the primary sources have been minutely scrutinized and incorporated into these readily available secondary works, primary sources consist mainly of official statistics, reports, original works in hardcover book form, and other material available to teachers and their pupils. Less available primary sources are used as needed. This study examines the development, use, and retirement of the major weapons since 1913. In order to estimate the value of each weapon, their effectiveness in achieving war aims in the light of civil-m ilitary relations will be studied. The concluding pur­ pose of this dissertation determines the need, if any, for a competent, independent, civilian organization to advise the president and congress on the development, use, and retirement of weapons. The m ilitarily oriented history materials for this dissertation are selected in the belief that pupils will become informed and, it is to be hoped, more rational on the subject of war and peace through the study of weapons with illumination on civil-m ilitary conflicts in regard to 1 national goals* The material itself is of great interest to most boys and to many girls. At the end of each unit of study, a chapter is devoted to ways and means of best teaching each study unit at the secondary school level. The final goal of each study unit is to teach the pupil certain insights into the material studied with emphasis on applying those insights to the present. Appropriate books are discussed briefly with suggestions as to what grade level and type of pupils they are best suited for. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) was a joint U.S. - British military organization created in England in February 1944 to carry out the invasion of Western Europe. Dwight D. Eisenhower, an officer of the United States Army, was appointed Supreme Allied Commander. Eisenhower organized his staff along U.S. military lines with separate staff sections devoted to personnel (G-1), intelligence (G-2), operations (G-3), logistics (G-4) and civilian affairs (G-5). The most significant files at SHAEF were kept in the Office of the Secretary of the General Staff (SGS). The SGS office served as a type of central file for SHAEF. The highest-level documents that received the personal attention of the Supreme Allied Commander and the Chief of Staff usually ended up in the SGS files. Many of the staff sections and administrative offices at SHAEF retired material to the SGS files.

Goebbels earned a PhD from Heidelberg University in 1921, writing his doctoral thesis on 19th century literature of the romantic school; he then went on to work as a journalist and later a bank clerk and caller on the stock exchange.

The one perhaps misleadingly identified as the “JULY” 1999 issue. We are continuing to struggle to achieve a paid subscription basis and have elected to release this issue ahead of our normal biannual date of March 2000 in order to apprise you of how we’re doing. The answer is, lousy. The response to Rudy’s September 27 th letter to you, suggesting $5 advance subscriptions, has been disappointing at best. Particularly so, to those of us who volunteered to carry on the good work Rudy started so many years ago. The effect of your “votes” in this respect will certainly be a substantial reduction in the circulation of future issues. Look at the listing of your names and addresses on page 6. Those of you who by your failure to subscribe, essentially voted against continued support of the M/C, are listed indented and in italics . Only a third of you chose to support future M/C newsletters with a subscription. Your names are listed in bold face type.     Introduction: Debunking the bunker legend any people are broadly familiar with the official narrative of Adolf Hitler's "last days", which was revisited on our cinema screens only recently in the form of the German film Do w n f a l l (Der Untergang, 2004). What they do not know is Mthat the official narrative is a political fiction—and that the revulsion it inspires is the result of deliberate planning.
