Dear Reader,

There has been increasing media and political attention given to the decline in the academic standards of Australian students relative to other nations as seen in many international tests.

8 THE DEMOLITION of the ‘Old’ Arts Building

Many Old Boys would recall receiving lessons in Manual Arts and Art in the ‘old’ Arts Building, almost adjacent to the Trenerry Gymnasium and behind the Barbour Classrooms.

The Old Arts Building This building was opened in 1982 on the site formerly occupied by the South Classroom Block building. The South Classroom Block is now located in a demolition yard in Mort Street in Toowoomba. The old Arts Building is now a pile of rubble, demolished in early January of this year to make way for the construction of the new Gymnasium. The site is ideal to create a sporting precinct with ready access to Kent and Trustees Ovals, the Aquatic Centre and the Trenerry South Classroom Block in its Gymnasium. current location in Mort St.

Construction of the new gymnasium begins

9 The New Gymnasium In early January 2017, work began on the demolition of the School’s old Manual Arts and Arts Building to make way for the School’s new Gymnasium.

The new Gymnasium will be two storeys with the upper level comprising two Basketball/ Volleyball courts including a retractable grandstand and the lower level being used for futsal (indoor soccer) in the winter, cricket nets in the summer and other sports such as badminton, table tennis, European handball and general cardio fitness. The new Gymnasium will represent the biggest single construction project the School has ever undertaken as shown in the images below. The building will transform the layout of the School and View from the Aquatic Centre the nature of student activity around the campus. Whilst the building is in progress, the Trustees Oval will be unavailable. At the end of the twelve months construction it will revert to being a fully useable oval so no existing oval or playing space will be compromised by the new facility. The current Gymnasium, the Trenerry Gymnasium, will offer additional court space for the boys in what will then represent an outstanding sports precinct for the entire School. 11 New Zealand Cricket Tour Twenty-four boys and four staff enjoyed a fantastic fourteen day Cricket tour of New Zealand at the start of the Christmas holidays.

We departed with two distinct teams, a ‘Development XI’ made up of a number of 2017 First XI aspirants and a ‘Touring XI’ which comprised Year 11 and 12 players representative of all levels of cricketing ability. The Development XI performed strongly winning six of seven games on tour. Their only loss was to Hamilton Boys’ High School which was ranked fourth in the National Schools’ Cricket competition last year. The Touring XI comprised some outstanding characters and according to TGS Director of Cricket, Mr Nathan Stains, they improved remarkably over the course of the tour to record three excellent wins. The tour started with matches in Auckland then we travelled down the North Island, through Hamilton, Hastings, Rotorua and Masterton before finishing up in Wellington. Along the way, the tourists also managed to fit in three days of The boys before departing Brisbane International Airport adventure activities around Rotorua including luge rides, white water rafting, and jet boating. through numerous tour stops. As we have come to expect, the camp was another huge success with 126 boys attending to learn the finer points of the game from TGS Cricket Camp our own TGS coaches as well as special guest external coaches. The camp had attendees from as far away as Mt Isa and Tenterfield. One The crack of leather on willow and the keen youngster travelled all the way from Katherine in the Northern Territory! A veteran of well over 100 first class games, including 21 Tests, Brendan was very popular with the boys and he imparted his hard won knowledge in an easy casual style. A captive audience of parents provided a perfect marketing opportunity and the School’s Director of Sport and Activities, Mr David Bell, took a group of 36 parents around on a comprehensive tour of the School on the Sunday morning. Sam Lyons, a TGS student in Year 7, was an enthusiastic participant. “I really liked the camp,” said Sam. “It was good that I got the chance to meet some new friends who were also starting at Grammar. I also enjoyed the coaching I got for my bowling and my as I feel I have been able to use these coaching tips in my games this season.”

14 Year 11 Geography Excursion The Year 11 Geography Field visit to the Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre focussed on the management of the Nerang River Catchment and the water supply used by Gold Coast residents.

Gathering scientific data such as Phosphate and Nitrate levels, Salinity and dissolved Oxygen, combined with a biological assessment of the native wildlife, allowed the boys to assess the quality of the river from source to mouth. Decisions were then made and solutions discussed regarding the future of urban development within this catchment and the impact that this has on the native flora and fauna. The scientific and decision making skills developed on this field visit link to a variety of different career options. Boys were also encouraged to think about economic and urban progression alongside maintaining a well balanced environment where native species can thrive.

Australian Schools’ Volleyball Championships The Australian Schools’ Volleyball Championships were held in Melbourne in December.

Our School first participated in this event in 2004 but in December 2016 we took our largest contingent – 32 boys, four teams and five staff. The competition was led by the Master-in-Charge of Volleyball, Dr Brett Sawyer, and the Open 1sts Volleyball coach, Mr Brad Siebenhausen, whose team progressed to the Bronze medal playoff in the Under 17 Division One. The three other teams had mixed success during the week; the older boys finished in the middle of their respective pools with the younger boys not experiencing any wins but gaining through experience.
