2005/2006 Annual Report 2005 –2006 ANNUAL REPORT CycleSport VICTORIA 2005/2006 ANNUAL REPORT 2005 –2006 ANNUAL REPORT CycleSport VICTORIA PRESIDENT’S REPORT Finance • Surplus for eighth year running • Thankyou to Trevor Wilkie as Finance Director for his leadership in this department along with our Board and staff • DISC has provided us with a new set of income and expense items to manage which has been challenging but I feel we have performed well, keeping hire costs down for our clubs and members. • There is still come considerable expenditure to be met in relation to the velodrome. The second grandstand will soon be delivered and installed and amongst other things, the track must be cleaned, the office is set to undergo some alterations and there is to be a VIP seating area added on the upstairs landing near the stairwell. Membership • It has been encouraging to see a significant increase in membership figures this year. The overall figure now stands at 3248, an increase of around 20%. • Again, the largest growth of membership has been seen in Masters categories. Thankyou to Stuart Campbell and the Masters Commission for their enthusiasm in this area. • Overall we have seen a pleasing increase in junior membership although there continues to be problem categories which continue to decrease Australia wide. Through the introduction of the $5 ‘kidz’ licence it is hoped we can build a strong base number of U/13 members which should translate to the other junior categories in years to come. • There has also been a significant increase in the non-competitive ‘Ride-It’ licence which is encouraging leading to more people riding and hopefully eventually racing. Vodafone Arena • CI will this season host three events at Vodafone Arena with the Melbourne Cup on Wheels, Austral Wheelrace and Australian Madison C’ships. The Sid Patterson Grand Prix will again be held at DISC. • This follows on from a reasonable season last year where CI were able to return another small surplus. • I would continue to encourage members to invite family and friends along to the track cycling as CI need your support. DISC • We have now had our first full year at DISC and I am pleased to say that the track is now being used most days of the week all year round. • We have had good support from our clubs and members for the use of the facility and I believe we have rewarded them with very reasonable track hire rates. • The track now needs some thorough cleaning due to the heavy track use. However, it is not such a bad problem to have considering it is being used so regularly. • The Commonwealth Games in March this year saw the temporary move of CSV operations to the Northcote Town Hall for six weeks which was a bit of an inconvenience. However the Games did provide us with a number of legacy items which we have been able to pass on the clubs and for use here at DISC. • Thankyou to Steve Peterson and Trevor Wilkie for their commitment to ensuring there is a smooth operation at DISC. 2005 –2006 ANNUAL REPORT CycleSport VICTORIA Major Events • With the Commonwealth Games being held in Melbourne earlier this year hopefully this has translated to an increase in interest in the sport of cycling, perhaps partly responsible for the increase in membership. • The Victorian Cyclist of the Year awards again improved on previous years to be widely regarded our best yet. I would like to thank Amy McCann for her organisation of the evening which again was a full house and one of the top nights in cycling. • Congratulations also go to Tess Downing for taking the top award as Victorian Cyclist of the Year and a further thankyou goes to the awards night committee of Matthew Wright, Christine Bell and David Good, along with the Maillot Jaune who again supported the evening. Racing / Officials • I would like to begin by thanking our officials and volunteers, along with our clubs and their volunteers for ensuring that Victoria continues to lead the way in racing Australia wide. This is largely due to the commitment of these people who put aside their time for the good of the sport. • Through our major road events with the Jayco Bay Classic and the Tattersalls Cup Series there continues to be a large number of riders travelling to Victoria from interstate to contest our racing which is pleasing. • The Victorian Road Championships run under the banner of the Australian Cycling Grand Prix again took a step forward this year with excellent entries for all three events over the three days. The City of Ballarat are right behind cycling at the moment and with the Australian Open Road C’ships returning to Buninyong in early 2007 it promises to be an exciting time in this state. • I would like to thank Ian Maher for his power of work for racing working with promoters and our officials to plan for each open event of which now takes up almost every weekend of the year. Development • The Victorian Schools Cycling Championships again continued with the road race & criterium format this year with another increase on entry numbers of around 20%, totalling over 1100 students. • The final of the Schools C’ships was again held in conjunction with the Herald Sun Tour finish in Carlton. • I would like to thank our Development Officer Warren Vigor for his work with the schools c’ships, along with other initiatives including two development camps, several come n try days, schools track clinics here at DISC, regional club meetings and several coaching courses. Staff • It has been pleasing that we have been able to keep the same team of staff together for a significant period of time now and this has allowed us to progress on some of the initiatives which we have been looking to focus on. • I would like to thank our staff for their commitment to their various roles with Ian Maher on racing, Steve Peterson overseeing DISC and administration, Amy McCann with finance and communications and Warren Vigor on Development. • There is no doubt DISC has been extension on the workload of the staff and I thank them for their ongoing commitment under considerable pressure. Volunteers • It is mentioned regularly but the volunteers within cycling are what keeps the sport going. Both open and club racing simply does not function without the support and commitment of these people and for that we are thankful. Again we honoured one of our sport’s hardest workers at this year’s Awards Dinner. Congratulations to George Nelson for being named Victorian Cycling volunteer of the year. Thanks to George and to Maureen Dougherty for their assistance with the office. Joe Ciavola President 2005 –2006 ANNUAL REPORT CycleSport VICTORIA Victorian Cycling Inc. 92nd SCHELDEPRIJS April 14 This Scheldeprijs is Johan Museeuw’s last race. The event draws a huge crow. Nico Mattan is alone in the break at the entrance of the final lap with a lead of 30”. He is caught after a 115 km breakaway. The first rider who bridges the gap is…Johan Museeuw. But the bunch is packed together for the finish and Boonen beats McEwen after a long side by side sprint. After the finish an impressive human tide marches on the Churchill Avenue. Everybody is really enthusiastic about young Boonen’s win and wants to pay respect to Johan Museeuw the day his career comes to an end. • 2002 Annual Report
2003 – 2004 Annual Report CycleSport Victoria President’s Report Finance I am delighted to announce that for the sixth year running, CycleSport Victoria has returned a trading surplus and we have achieved what I believe is an excellent result. I commend the ongoing work by the Board and Staff in keep ing costs to a minimum with a special mention to Trevor Wilkie. As Finance Director he has ensured that CSV remain accountable, whilst ensuring that the membership is being serviced and the staff are working in comfortable conditions. We now approach a ver y important period at our new home where we face a considerable increase in costs, especially whilst setting up the facility. In terms of significant purchases that have been made, the timing equipment for DISC has been purchased, two new computers, new colour printer, new race radios along with a new refrigerator for the office. Membership CSV continue to place an emphasis on their servicing of the membership. We continue to explore all avenues in order to provide a greater level and range of servicing to our members. There has been a new website set up and continues to lead the field in providing up -to-date information relevant to our membership. The website is an excellent resource for our members along with the general public and now with the int rod uct ion of on -line entry, we have received some excellent feedback on the convenience and reliability of race entry via this method. In terms of membership figures, we are down on last year’s total by 31 members after increasing the figure by 207 last year.
