Nightwish was formed by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen in a small town of Kitee in Finland as the embodiment of his idea - a band, playing camp songs that can be ususally heard in the forest near the fire. The problem was that the classical operal voice of their vocalist Tarja Turunen was too powerful for acoustic music. Finally they found the solution: changed the acoustic guitar for the electric one and started playing power metal. Nightwish recorded a demo and sent it to different studios. In the beginning of 1997 their line-up was finished by drummer Jukka Nevalainen. The band signed to the Spinefarm Records for two albums. The first one, Angels Fall First, was released in the same year. Though the critical reviews were not homogeneous, Nightwish were an undoubted success in Finland. The band planned to tour but it was difficult to bring to life due to Tarja's study. Besides, drummer Nevalainen and guitarist Vuorinen were fulfilling their obligatory military service for the moment. It did not stop the Spinefarm from realising the Nifgtwish's huge potential and prolonging the contract for one more album. In 1998 the group was extended by an obligatory for every self-esteeming metal band bass player Sami Vanska (later replaced by Marco Hietala).

Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession.

New Perspective Rereading Seymour Joseph Guy’s Making a Train Lauren Lessing In March 1868 a reviewer for the Commercial Advertiser described a small painting on view in Seymour Joseph Guy’s Tenth Street studio in Manhattan. It depicted a young girl preparing for bed and holding around her waist “a gaudy skirt of a dress, its folds, draped behind her, forming a train. From her shoulders a single garment hangs loosely, disclosing her neck and finely rounded shoulders.”1 The painting, originally titled The Votary (or Votaress) of Fashion, is now known as Making a Train (fig. 1). Visually complex, beautifully painted, and disturbing in its sensual presentation of a prepubescent female body, Making a Train has long intrigued scholars of American art and culture. Recently, the painting’s inclusion in the exhibition American Stories: Paintings of Everyday Life, 1765–1915 confirmed its position in the canon of American art.2 Concealed behind the scholarly narrative of this picture’s Americanness, however, is the fact that Guy—who was born and trained in England and arrived in the United States at the age of thirty—used an artistic vocabulary drawn from British painting.

Toinen tärkeä tehtävä on ana- lyysimetodin testaus, kuinka hyvin sen tuottamat tulokset vastaavat musiikin kuulokuvaa. Metodi perustuu yhtyeen kappaleiden graafisten similariteettimatriisien visuaaliseen analyysiin sekä kappaleiden tonaalisen rakenteen hie- rarkkiseen klusterointiin. Samanlaista tutkimusta ei aikaisemmin ole suoritettu, joten taustateoriana toimii tutki- muksen eri osa-alueiden piiristä yhdistelty taustatieto. Tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu alkuperäisessä audiomuodossa olevista Nightwish-yhtyeen kappaleista sekä niiden pohjalta luoduista MIDI-tiedostoista. Aineistoon sisältyvät kaikki yhtyeen täyspitkien studioalbumien alkuperäis- julkaisuilta löytyvät yhtyeen omat kappaleet. Yksinkertaiset rakennemuodot hallitsevat valtaosaa Nightwish–yhtyeen kappaleista. Suurempia kehityslinjoja ei juurikaan tonaalisista rakenteista löydy, vaan rakenteet ovat pysyneet hyvin saman kaltaisina yhtyeen
