  • Media Nations 2019
Media nations: UK 2019 Published 7 August 2019 Overview This is Ofcom’s second annual Media Nations report. It reviews key trends in the television and online video sectors as well as the radio and other audio sectors. Accompanying this narrative report is an interactive report which includes an extensive range of data. There are also separate reports for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Media Nations report is a reference publication for industry, policy makers, academics and consumers. This year’s publication is particularly important as it provides evidence to inform discussions around the future of public service broadcasting, supporting the nationwide forum which Ofcom launched in July 2019: Small Screen: Big Debate. We publish this report to support our regulatory goal to research markets and to remain at the forefront of technological understanding. It addresses the requirement to undertake and make public our consumer research (as set out in Sections 14 and 15 of the Communications Act 2003). It also meets the requirements on Ofcom under Section 358 of the Communications Act 2003 to publish an annual factual and statistical report on the TV and radio sector. This year we have structured the findings into four chapters. • The total video chapter looks at trends across all types of video including traditional broadcast TV, video-on-demand services and online video. • In the second chapter, we take a deeper look at public service broadcasting and some wider aspects of broadcast TV. • The third chapter is about online video. This is where we examine in greater depth subscription video on demand and YouTube.

  • The DRM Trial
Project Mayflower: The DRM Trial Final Report April 2009 1 Project Mayflower: The DRM Trial Trial Summary Introduction The BBC and its transmission provider, National Grid Wireless, have recently undertaken a trial of digital radio mondiale (DRM), a technology which allows digital broadcasting at frequencies lower than 30 MHz. The trial ran for a year from April 2007. The final report of the trial is made up of three separate documents: − this trial summary report, which provides some background and draws together the headline conclusions; − a final audience research report, which outlines the results of the research undertaken with an audience panel over the year1; and − a BBC R&D white paper, which provides the results and analysis of continuous unattended measuring and logging of the transmission2. Reflecting the way in which the trial was organised, each of these reports has been written by a different part of the team involved. The final audience research report has been written by the company employed to undertake the research – Leapfrog Research & Planning – with the assistance of BBC Marketing, Communications & Audiences. The technical note has been written by a member of the team who built the continuous logging network at BBC Research & Development and who was involved in developing the underlying DRM technology. 1 “Project Mayflower ‐ Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Trial: Final audience research summary report”, Daniel Amarasinghe (Leapfrog Planning & Research), Russell Chant (BBC MC&A); August 2008 2 BBC Research White Paper 174, “The Plymouth Digital Radio Mondiale (Drm) Trial: Long‐term Reception Results”, Andrew Murphy; February 2009 2 Background to the trial The digital radio mondiale (DRM) technology is an international standard which was designed to allow digital broadcasting at frequencies below 30 MHz, that is in the broadcasting bands which currently rely on AM transmission.

  • Pocketbook for You, in Any Print Style: Including Updated and Filtered Data, However You Want It
Hello Since 1994, Media UK - www.mediauk.com - has contained a full media directory. We now contain media news from over 50 sources, RAJAR and playlist information, the industry's widest selection of radio jobs, and much more - and it's all free. From our directory, we're proud to be able to produce a new edition of the Radio Pocket Book. We've based this on the Radio Authority version that was available when we launched 17 years ago. We hope you find it useful. Enjoy this return of an old favourite: and set mediauk.com on your browser favourites list. The year before I had listened with excitement to the launch of our local commercial station, Liverpool's Radio City, and wanted to find out what other stations I might be able to pick up. In those days the Guide covered TV as well as radio, which could only manage to fill two pages – but then there were only 19 “ILR” stations.

  • Media Nations: Wales 2019
Media nations: Wales 2019 Published 7 August 2019 Overview This is Ofcom’s second annual Media Nations: Wales report. The report reviews key trends in the television and audio-visual sector as well as the radio and audio industry in Wales. It provides context to the work Ofcom undertakes in furthering the interests of consumers and citizens in the markets we regulate. In addition to this Wales report, there are separate reports for the UK as a whole, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, as well as an interactive data report. The report provides updates on several datasets, including bespoke data collected directly from licensed television and radio broadcasters (for output, spend and revenue in 2018), Ofcom’s proprietary consumer research (for audience opinions), and BARB and RAJAR (for audience consumption). It should be noted that our regulatory powers do not permit us to collect data directly from online video-on-demand and video-sharing services (such as ITV Player, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube) for research purposes, and therefore we also use third-party sources for information relating to these services. 1 Contents Overview............................................................................................................ 2 Key points .......................................................................................................... 3 TV services and devices...................................................................................... 5 Screen viewing ..................................................................................................

  • The History of the Development of British Satellite Broadcasting Policy, 1977-1992
THE HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF BRITISH SATELLITE BROADCASTING POLICY, 1977-1992 Windsor John Holden —......., Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of PhD University of Leeds, Institute of Communications Studies July, 1998 The candidate confirms that the work submitted is his own and that appropriate credit has been given where reference has been made to the work of others ABSTRACT This thesis traces the development of British satellite broadcasting policy, from the early proposals drawn up by the Home Office following the UK's allocation of five direct broadcast by satellite (DBS) frequencies at the 1977 World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC), through the successive, abortive DBS initiatives of the BBC and the "Club of 21", to the short-lived service provided by British Satellite Broadcasting (BSB). It also details at length the history of Sky Television, an organisation that operated beyond the parameters of existing legislation, which successfully competed (and merged) with BSB, and which shaped the way in which policy was developed. It contends that throughout the 1980s satellite broadcasting policy ceased to drive and became driven, and that the failure of policy-making in this time can be ascribed to conflict on ideological, governmental and organisational levels. Finally, it considers the impact that satellite broadcasting has had upon the British broadcasting structure as a whole. 1 TABLE OF CONTENTS Abstract i Contents ii Acknowledgements 1 INTRODUCTION 3 British broadcasting policy - a brief history

  • BBC Local Radio Service Licence
BBC Local Radio Service Licence. Issued May 2013 BBC Local Radio This service licence describes the most important characteristics of BBC Local Radio, including how it contributes to the BBC’s public purposes. Service Licences are the core of the BBC’s governance system. They aim to provide certainty for audiences and stakeholders about what each BBC service should provide. The Trust uses service licences as the basis for its performance assessment and as the basis for its consideration of any proposals for change to the UK public services from the BBC Executive. A service may not change in a way that breaches its service licence without Trust approval. The Trust presumes that any proposed change to a stated Key Characteristic of a licence will require it to undertake a Public Value Test. Should it decide not to carry out a Public Value Test before approving any such change, then it must publish its reasons in full. This Service Licence covers all BBC Local Radio stations in England. Each of the 39 stations is described in Annex II of this licence Part I: Key characteristics of the service 1. Remit The remit of BBC Local Radio is to provide a primarily speech-based service of news, information and debate to local communities across England. Speech output should be complemented by music. The target audience should be listeners aged 50 and over, who are not well-served elsewhere, although the service may appeal to all those interested in local issues. There should be a strong emphasis on interactivity and audience involvement.
