Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research 3 | Mindfulness in the Life of a Muslim Introduction In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful Modern life involves a daily bustle of noise, distraction, and information overload. Our senses are constantly stimulated from every direction to the point that a simple moment of quiet stillness seems impossible for some of us. This continuous agitation hinders us from getting the most out of each moment, subtracting from the quality of our prayers and our ability to remember Allah. We all know that we need more presence in prayer, more control over our wandering minds and desires. But what exactly can we do achieve this? How can we become more mindful in all aspects of our lives, spiritual and temporal? That is where the practice of exercising mindfulness, in the Islamic context of muraqabah, can help train our minds to become more disciplined and can thereby enhance our regular worship and daily activities. -

THE WELL-SPRINGS OF ACTION: AN ENQUI RV INTO '1-l.M\N NATIJRE' I Richard Broxton Onians' (1951) book, The Opigins of European Thought about the Body, the Mind, the SouZ, the WopZd, Time and Fate, is as exhaustive as the title suggests. Its value rests in enabling us to perceive the dim outlines of a theory of human powers which was present in the minds of the peoples of western Europe before the dawn of history. The phenomenology and osteol ogy with which Onians supplemented the. account, further enable us to locate the physiological processes on which the theory must have been based. It has been lost. Today we possess only fragments. And yet,we repeatedly make recourse to the theory in our behaviours and speech as if we knew its substance. The hand is placed upon the chest when one pledges allegiance to one's country. To indicate assent, one nods one's head. Some one who is over-sexed is called 'horny'. In a Catholic church, one touches one's forehead and one genuflects before the altar. We associate the symbol of a skull and crossbones with death. We ascribe to ourselves the capacity of appreciating the 'aesthetics' of an object, and speak of the inspiration we receive from a speech. These are but 'shreds and patches', but at one point they were connected. The theory rested on a primordial disjunction between fluid and air; between the liquid or liquefiable substances con tained in the brain, the cerebro-spinal column, the genitals and joints, and the breath. -

Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT KONDIK, KEVIN, W.,, M.A., March 2010, Philosophy A Critical Review of Three Theories for Music’s Origin (82 pp.) Director of Thesis: Arthur Zucker This thesis compares three theories which debate whether or not the trait of music is constitutive of a biological adaptation. Steven Pinker advances a view that music cannot be an adaptation because making or responding to music utilizes faculties which evolved for other reasons. On the next view, Geoffrey Miller claims that music is a sexually selected trait which evolved primarily to seduce potential mates. Finally, Ian Cross argues that music can be seen as an extension of juvenile behaviors into adulthood and has efficacy in the consolidation of bonds within a group. I conclude that all three theories are insufficient as an explanation of why music evolved in the hominid lineage. The main reasons why these theories all fail is they all rely upon a speculative historical reconstructions and imprecise definitions of music. -

Abstract: During human evolutionary history, there were “trade-offs” between expending time and energy on child-rearing and mating, so both men and women evolved conditional mating strategies guided by cues signaling the circumstances. Many short-term matings might be successful for some men; others might try to find and keep a single mate, investing their effort in rearing her offspring. Recent evidence suggests that men with features signaling genetic benefits to offspring should be preferred by women as short-term mates, but there are trade-offs between a mate’s genetic fitness and his willingness to help in child-rearing. It is these circumstances and the cues that signal them that underlie the variation in short- and long-term mating strategies between and within the sexes. Sexual Behavior and Satisfaction in Same-Sex and Different-Sex Relationships Taylor Orth Department of Sociology, Stanford University Author Contact Information: 450 Serra Mall Building 120, Room 30D Stanford, CA 94305 [email protected] (281) 772-0155 1 Sexual Behavior and Satisfaction in Same-Sex and Different-Sex Relationships Abstract: Among both academics and the lay public remains a widespread and taken- for-granted belief that male and female sexuality are fundamentally different and that men and women in sexual relationships compromise on such differences. More recently, however, social scientists have begun to question the extent to which gender gaps in sexual desire may be socially rather than biologically determined. Because collecting accurate and representative data on sexual behavior within relationships is often challenging, very little empirical evidence has been available to scientifically disentangle these competing perspectives. This study evaluates variation in the sexual behavior and satisfaction of same-sex and different-sex couples through an analysis of two nationally representative American surveys, How Couples Meet and Stay Together (HCMST) and The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). Findings demonstrate that women in same-sex relationships have sex less often than other couple pairings. Men in same-sex relationships report significantly lower sexual satisfaction and higher rates of non-monogamy relative to other couples, even after controlling for relevant factors. Overall, the results from this study support the notion that sexual relationships function differently in the absence of a male or female partner, but present a less deterministic and more socially complex perspective than has traditionally been accepted. -

SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW THE PROBLEM WITH NEUROLAW DAVID W. OPDERBECK* ABSTRACT This Article describes and critiques the increasingly popular program of reductive neuroLaw. Law has irrevocably entered the age of neuroscience. Various institutes and conferences are devoted to questions about the relation between neuroscience and legal procedures and doctrines. Most of the new “neuroLaw” scholarship focuses on evidentiary and related issues, and is important and beneficial. But some versions of reductive neuroLaw are frightening. Although they claim to liberate us from false conceptions of ourselves and to open new spaces for more scientific applications of the law, they end up stripping away all notions of “selves” and of “law.” This Article argues that a revitalized sense of transcendence is required to avoid the violent metaphysics of reductive neuroLaw and to maintain the integrity of both “law” and “science.” * Professor of Law, Seton Hall University Law School, and Director, Gibbons Institute of Law, Science & Technology. -

A background in anthropology is not required; in fact a diversity of backgrounds is an advantage for the course. We shall approach the issue of “explanation” in anthropology, not in an abstract way, but with a series of “case histories” from the instructor’s work. Each week everyone will read one or two chapters from Search or Challenge, or a chapter or article on disk, as indicated. In addition, individuals will prepare brief reports from the “other readings” which are expansions, related topics, criticisms, or downright disagreements with the position taken in the general reading. You should prepare a brief write-up of each of the “other readings” that you tackle, and these will count towards the grade. A short term paper on one of the topics or a related topic will complete the assignment. For this you should use all the “other readings” on the topic, and others that will be discussed individually.
