Gautam Basu Thakur and Jonathan Michael Dickstein One of the most striking recent developments in the humanities and the social sciences has been the shift of focus away from the human to the nonhuman. This shift is represented by not one but many concurrent critical and philosophical movements, concerning speculative consider- ations about topics such as ecology, post- and transhumanism(s), affect studies, systems and network theory, and object-oriented ontology. These considerations have led to, on the one hand, the exploration of the com- plex relational or congregational functions of nonhumans; and, on the other, the need to reimagine the world in the context of hyperadvancing technologies, swarming embodied communities, unending global con- flicts, and looming specters of environmental crises. Sometimes together referred to as ‘non-anthropocentric humanities’ or more colloquially as the ‘nonhuman turn,’ these new research directions G. Dickstein have proven vital to twenty-first century thought.1 What though does this vitality entail? To begin to provide an answer, we might observe that each approach symptomatically stresses the problematization, critique, and rejection of human-only or human-centered approaches to a given object of study. Their common interest might be said to imply a characteristic rejection of what Immanuel Kant designated his Copernican Revolution— that is, a rejection of the replacement of the assumption that ‘all our cogni- tion must conform to the objects,’ with the assumption that ‘the objects must conform to our cognition.’2 The result of such a rejection tends to amount to a decentering of the human in favor of a recentering of nonhu- mans and their world, thereby a vacating of the semblance of unadulter- ated anthropocentrism and a repurposing of the human–nonhuman dynamic according, not to conflict, but to symbiosis. We are not claiming to dismiss this tendency outright—to reject the rejection of transcendental or even metaphysical idealism. We are claim- ing, however, that a purely (or overly) positive account of the original rejection proves too hasty. In this context, therefore, we posit the irreduc- ibility of the Other insofar as the lack indicated by this irreducibility overlaps with the lack demonstrated by the subtraction of the subject from its world—that is, a subtraction leading to the subject being only a subject for its world but never a subject of it. Certainly, we grant the first thesis of any materialism: There is some One (i.e., a One that is material- ity as such).3 Nevertheless, as good dialecticians, we aim—even if in dif- ferent ways—to privilege the necessary second thesis: Materiality is prior to thought.4 In this sense, we want to focus on what connects humanistic interest in the nonhuman with an eye more on what these interests lack than on what they possess.

Kojève took the struggle for recognition and the master/slave dialectic to be the central elements of Hegel’s thought. On this basis, Beauvoir and Fanon came to understand gender and racial oppression in terms of distortions in human relations of recognition. They argue that women (for Beauvoir) and black people (for Fanon) have been excluded from full participation in the struggle for recognition. However, these existential-Hegelian views are sometimes thought to have been superseded by the anti-Hegelianism of post-1960s French post-structuralism. Against this position, the chapter explains how the post- structuralist ‘French feminist’ Irigaray takes up and transforms Hegel’s notion of mutual recognition, to recommend that differently sexed individuals accept and recognize one another in their irreducible difference. LaSusa 2010 All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT This project offers a unique contribution to the scholarship on Jean-Paul Sartre’s concept of bad faith by providing a sustained exploration of bad faith in the context of contemporary tourism. More specifically, I explore the bad faith of what I call “checklist tourism,” which defines the tourist trip as a rapid succession of visits from one “must- see” site to the next, snapping photos and collecting souvenirs along the way. I argue that checklist tourism offers a safe and comfortable structure for travel that protects tourists against Sartrean anguish—that is, the experience of alienation, fear, freedom, and responsibility—that travel can sometimes evoke. This analysis contributes to the literature on bad faith in three main ways. First, I provide an extended analysis of the Sartrean spirit of seriousness, highlighting part of this concept that has thus far been underdeveloped in the scholarship. I argue that checklist tourism manifests the spirit of seriousness, which accepts the obligation of “must-see” sites and belief in the transcendent value of the material objects seen on the tour. Second, I explore the embodied bad faith of the possession and appropriation of the material world (rather than studying the possession of people, as most scholars have done), arguing that the tourist attempts to appropriate tourist sites through bodily engagement with them.

Signature……………...Peter Latham Date……………………26/08/16 2 Abstract American suburban fiction is often viewed as satirical social commentary, critiquing its affluent, dull, and conformist cultural environment. In this thesis, however, I argue that a significant strand of such fiction, published between the early 1960s and the beginning of the twenty-first century, was concerned with broader existential themes, and was strongly influenced by European existentialism, particularly by Sartre’s philosophy. While this influence is apparent in American urban fiction of the 1950s, for example in Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man (1952) and Richard Wright’s The Outsider (1953), it is far more fully developed, and ‘Americanized’, in the suburban fiction of the 1960s – in John Updike’s Rabbit, Run (1960), Richard Yates’ Revolutionary Road (1961), and Walker Percy’s The Moviegoer (1962), all of which, I argue, are fundamentally concerned with the notion of existential authenticity.
