After ----- improving from 24- 40 to 29-24-1 last year, the sky is the limit for the squad, head coach Meredith Bakley said. UNI enters the Missouri Valley Conference this year after competing in the Gateway Conference in its first 1 0 years of Division I play. The change is small with the composition of teams much the same -Western and Eastern Illinois are no longer included, while Creighton and Tulsa have been added. The Valley does not have an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament as the Gateway did, but features some of the midwest's best softball teams. Depth and experience will be in abundance as the Panthers return all but one starter- all-Gateway catcher Vicki White. UNI featur~ nine players (one sophomore, four juniors and four seniors) that started in at least 34 games last year. Senior Deena Chipp, a two-time all-Gateway selection, leads Chipp Leads an offense that rewrote the UNI record book last year. She Explosive holds UNI Division I season and career marks for home runs, Offense batting average and slugging percentage, along with the career marks for steals. Chipp teamed with juniors Karen VandeVoort and Heather Daters to post UNI 's top three Division I batting averages last year with marks of .390, .363 and .354, respectively. They helped the team post records for batting average (.293) and runs per game (4.67). Seniors Connie Fangmann (.285), Laura Novotny (.284) and jennifer Peters (.250) also posted career-best batting marks last year. Novotny was third in the nation, belting a school-record 11 triples for a 0.24 per game mark. Fangmann's 22 RBI were easily a career best and Peters is an effective number two batter, displaying deft bunting ability (13 sacrifices last fall) and speed with a school-record 19 steals last year. Two freshmen will be thrown into battle from the Defense Improved start this spring. Great defense starts with the With Addition of pitching and shortstop positions, which is right Weber and Keiper where freshman Kandy Keiper and Stacy Weber fit into the 1993 season . ........................................................................................................................................................ Keiper showed the step up in competition was no problem with her 5-1 record and 0.92 ERA during the fall exhibition season. The Iowa all-stater allowed only 31 hits in 45 2/3 innings during the exhibition season (4.8 hits per game). Weber is also an Iowa all-stater and a complete "They will be player. She hit .304 during the fall, starting 16 of UNI's 19 games. Her 12 RBis topped the team. tremendous Weber's speed and hitting only add to an already players for us for potent offense, but her quickness and glovework will many years." fill a sore spot from the 1992 season, Bakley said. "We had two weaknesses last season that really hurt," Bakley said. "Our infield defense was weak and we didn't have depth in our pitching staff. We went after Kandy and Stacy and things worked out very well for us. They will be tremendous players for us for many years." Keiper joins veterans Dana Happel and Desiree Bebout to round out a solid pitching staff. Bebout has been a mainstay for UNI already, totaling 30 wins during her first two seasons. She is pace to become UNI's winningest pitcher, a mark held by Sarah O'Byrne (1987-90) with 60. Happel, a starter last year, may be pushed into a relief role. She could also see action as a utility player. 'We will start the spring with a three-pitcher rotation, but when we get into conference games we'll go with the top two," Bakley said. At the other end of UNI's battery is VandeVoort and jennifer Zbornik, a shortstop last year. Vande Voort will start, but may also see time at third base. While filling in for an injured VandeVoort during the fall, Zbornik hit .395, belting five doubles and driving in 10 runs. She ended the fall with a seven game hitting streak. Zbornik is a likely candidate for designated player duties. 'We are very fortunate to have two outstanding catchers," Bakley said. "Karen is a stronger thrower, but )en is such a good all-around player we need her in the lineup somewhere." Rounding out the infield is first baseman Amy Hendrickson, Novotny at second base and Fangmann at third. Hendrickson is a two-year starter, while Novotny and Fangmann have started in various positions for three years. Outfield Full The Panthers claim one of the best outfields in the midwest, going into 1993 returning

UNI BASEBALL CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF WINNING Dating back to 1893, no University of Northern Iowa athletic team has won more games than the Panther baseball program. This season, UNI baseball opens its lOOth season with 952 wins all-time. (No baseball team was fielded in 1903-04, 1909-10 and 1943-45.) Originally begun when the school was known as Iowa State Normal School, the baseball team has represented the school when it was also known as Iowa State Teachers College and the State College of Iowa before assuming its present title in 1967. Starting in the years with Captain Avery as coach of the first two squads, the Panthers have built a program that thrives on hard working young men dedicated to being the best they can be on the diamond and in the classroom. Last year was no exception, as five Panthers; Ryan McGuire, Kevin Briggeman, Greg Woodin, Scott Sobkowiak and Aaron Houdeshell were named academic all-MVC by the sports information directors of the league.

A SPECIAL CLASS OF SENIORS This spring marks the final season for five seniors with the University of Northern Iowa baseball program: Jeremy Bunkers, Jason Eldridge, Aaron Lubach, Scott Schirmer and Jesse Zimmer. It also figures to be the final campaign for junior Matt Cobb, who plans to graduate in the spring and attend medical school at Kansas in the future. Over the past three seasons, this senior class has a record of 86-79, and they need 27 wins to become the winningest senior class in Panther baseball history. For seniors Aaron Lubach and Scott Schirmer, it marks the culmination of a ca reer that included a 32-23 season in 1997. In that season, the Panthers finished second in the Missouri Valley Conference, as Schirmer was named to the all-MVC honorable men tion team. Last season Lubach was used as both closer and set-up man, notching a perfect 3-0 record in the process.
