Sara Hayes is in her first season at the helm of the Northern Iowa softball program. Hayes is replacing Meredith Bakely who retired after coaching UNI for 22 seasons. Hayes is taking over a Panther squad that finished 28-32 a year ago and in a regular season tie for first-place in the Missouri Valley Conference. Hayes comes to UNI after serving the last five seasons as an assistant at DePaul University in Chicago, IL. The Blue Demons made it to the each of the past two seasons. These were the first such appearances in the history of the school. Last season, DePaul finished 40-22 and 10th in the final USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll. The coaching staff was named the NFCA's Na tional Coaching Staff of the Year in 1999 and the Midwest Staff of the Year during the past season. Hayes coached 11 GTE Academic All-Americans as well as 11 Louisville Slugger All-Americans. Hayes graduated from Notre Dame in 1995 with a degree in Anthropology. She was responsible for setting numerous records while playing softball there. Hayes was the 1995 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and a three-time all-Mideast Region selection. She was the Irish MVP as both a junior and senior when the Irish earned berths in the NCAA Tournament. Hayes was also MCC Newcomer of the Year in 1992. When she left Notre Dame, she was the all-time leader in 10 offensive 2001 Panther Coaching Staff categories and the holder of eight single- season school records. A native of Rancho Santa Fe, Califor nia, Hayes currently resides in Cedar Falls.

Entering her first season as part of the Panther coaching staff is Christy Hebert. Hebert brings a load of experience and talent to UNI as she has been very successful at both the Division I and professional levels. Prior to UNI, Hebert had been an assistant coach at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, since 1998. In addition, she was a member of the North Carolina Diamonds and Tampa Bay Firestix of the Women's Professional Softball League in 1998-2000. Herbert made the all-star team for the Diamonds in 1998. Herberts college days were spent in Iowa City, where she was a standout for the University of Iowa softball team. She was both all-Big Ten and All-American in both 1996 and 1997. She helped the Hawkeyes reach the Women's College World Series in 1995, '96 and '97. In 1997, Hebert was named to the Women's College World Series All-Tournament Team.

JODY DEAN Assistant Coach * 1st Season * Northern Iowa 1999

Making her first transition from player to coach is Jody Dean. Dean joins the staff as a part-time assistant, and will head the development of UNI's recruiting and alumni network. Dean was a standout for the Panther softball team from 1996- 98. A two-time all-conference pick, Dean owns four single-season records: hits-66, RBI-44, total bases-117 and home runs 12, and two career marks at UNI (home runs- 29 She set an MVC record with 29 homers in her career. Dean was named third team All-America in 1998 after batting .393 with 12 homers and 38 RBI. After her graduation, Dean worked at American Color Imaging until October 1999. She then moved on to John Deere where she has worked as a Human Resource Representa tive/Recruiter ever since.

KIM EDWARDS Uolunteer Assistant Coach * 1st Season *

Kim Edwards will be helping the pitchers as a volunteer assistant coach. Edwards brings valuable pitching experience to the Panther softball program. She has played competitively in Canada, the United States and Austrailia. Edwards originally hails from Canada. She was offered a chance to go our for the Canadian Olympic Softball Team in 2000, but decided to attend college in the U.S. instead. She attended Texas A&M University on a softball scholarship from 1996-1997. She then transferred to McNeese State where she continued to play softball until May 1999. Last year, Kim and her husband, Kenny, transferred to the University of Northern Iowa. The 2001 University of North ern Iowa softball season marks the arrival of new head coach Sara Hayes. Hayes takes the helm for the Panthers after the retirement of Meredith Bakley. Bakley retired after going 28-32 last season and finishing in a regular season tie for fust place in the Missouri Valley Conference. Hayes is very optimis tic about the new perspective that she and her staff can bring to an already strong team. UNI will rely on the experi enced team members for leadership, yet many young faces will be vital to the Panthers' success. Junior Lindsay Wood returns to lead the offensive charge for UNI. Wood batted a team-best .362 with eight HR 'and 29 RBI's and was a unanimous first-team all-conference pick last season. Catcher Heidi Freitager looks to bring power to the plate for the Panthers. Freitager had a very explosive fall as she batted .611 with 6 RBI's and 11 hits. Kristi Johnson rounds out the senior trio for UNI at second base. Johnson transferred to UNI from Kirkwood Community College last season and was second on the team in hitting with a .291 batting average. "The strength of this season's team lies in the core of the upper class," said Hayes. "The seniors are really good leaders and are good mentors to the younger girls on the team. These younger girls have come in really raw with a ton of talent. I think the upper-classmen on the team can provide this structure to help with the development of the younger players. We are deep in a lot of positions and there is a lot of competition on the team for these positions. There probably won't be a set lineup until March." THE OUTFIELD A good core of experienced and talented players return for the UNI outfield this spring. Senior Beth Scheetz looks to retain her starting position at center. Juniors Sarah Rehling and Lindsey Wright also will see action for UNI in the outfield. Freshmen Kristen Rehling, Lyndsy Owen and Melissa Larson all could challenge for spots in the outfield. Owen was the 2000 Iowa High School Softball Player of the Year and brings an enormous amount of talent and determina tion to the field. Kristen Rehling is the younger sister of Sarah. "We have a lot of experience," said Hayes on the outfield. "The outfield is going to rotate a lot and play a lot of different positions. These players are all very talented and we will try them out and find out who best fits the positions and performs well as a team. Defensively, the outfield is our most experienced core. They communicate well with each other and know where they need to be to make the play." • •1·1·> I ii ii';\§ 110 a·ti f ~ ----2_0_0_1_s_e_a_s_o_n_ P_re_v_i_e_w___ ) •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• THE INFIELD The infield for UNI looks to be led by the very talented trio of Kristi Johnson, Stacey Sampson and Lindsay Wood. Johnson looks to retain her starting position at second base. Last season she started all 60 games for UNI while racking up 55 hits. Wood, an all-Region selection last year, also started all 60 games for UNI setting single season records for total bases (128), hits (77) and extra-base hits (30). Wood will look to retain her starting position at third base although there is a possibility she could see time in the outfield. Sampson will look to get the starting job at first base after playing in 30 games last season with a .211 batting average. One newcomer who hopes to challenge for playing time this year is freshman Wendi Kragel at first base. Sophomore Blair Young and freshman Kimbee Plata will look to take the starting shortstop duties. Plata could also push Wood for the starting spot at third base. "Our older players provide a great core for the infield to build out of," said Hayes. "The new players are very athletic and know the game really well. They will provide the older players with a challenge because they will have to play to their potential to win those starting spots. We have a lot of talent defensively in the infield, we just have to figure out who has the offensive ability to go along with it before a starting lineup is set." PITCHING With the loss of last season's pitching duo of Heidi Fromherz and Jeannine Soncini, there will be many new faces on the mound for UNI this season. Sophomore Malinda McClintock leads the charge for the Panther pitching staff and is the lone returning hurler from last year. McClintock appeared in 26 games last season with an overall record of 4-6, a 2.34 ERA and three saves. Sopho more Cara Graver and freshmen Lyndsy Owen and Julie Philips are inexperienced but bring an immense amount of talent to the mound. "This is a young and inexperienced group," said Hayes. "They have loads of talent, but we need to sharpen up. They really compliment each other well. Each pitcher brings her own style to the game. All four of these players will grow and each one will be a vital part to our success this spring." CATCHERS The catcher position may be the most experienced for the UNI softball squad this year. Senior Heidi Freitager and sophomore Allison Taverner return behind the plate for the Panthers this year. Freitager was second on the team with a .980 fielding percentage last season. She was responsible for 215 putouts while committing only five errors and started 51 games last year. Taverner returns with perhaps the most powerful bat on the UNI squad. She started nine games for the Panthers at catcher last season. Taverner appeared in 54 games overall with a .252 batting average and five home runs. • Roster •1•r•!iki!rilii§f1fjQ·tif • ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••C Numerical Roster No Name Year Position Bff Hometown I Hi2h School / Previous Colle2e 2 Julie Phillips Fr. Athletic Director Rick Hartzell Rick Hartzell, former Director of Athletics and Recreation at Bucknell University, was named Director of Athletics at the University of Northern Iowa on August 9, 1999. The position became available after Chris Ritrievi resigned after seven years to accept a position at Michigan State Univer sity as Director of Development for Intercollegiate Athletics. Hartzell had been at Bucknell since 1988, directing a Division I program with I-AA football consisting of 28 total sports. During his tenure, Hartzell initiated and completed several building projects costing over $10 million and guided the department through the NCAA certification and the gender equity review. Bucknell's football program claimed the Patriot League title in 1996 and was nationally ranked in both '96 and '97. The men's cross country, wrestling, lacrosse and water polo teams reached the Top 20 in the country during Hartzell's reign, and the men's basketball team played in the NCAA Tournament twice. Additionally, Hartzell directed a $25 million fundraising effort, and Bucknell ranked first in the nation in the graduation rate of all students-athletes from 1995-97, never ranking lower than fourth in the annual NCAA statistics. Prior to his appointment at Bucknell, Hartzell was Director of Athletics and Chairman of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County from 1985-88, directing a 19-sport program which moved from Division II to Division I during his tenure. Hartzell has also been an Assistant Athletic Driector for football and men's and woman's basketball at Northwestern University from 1982-85; an Administrative Assistant to the Director of Athletics Assistant Baseball Coach from 1980-82 at the University of Iowa; and an instructor, Assistant Football Coach and Head Baseball Coach from 1977-80 at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA. The University of Northern Iowa announced receipt of the largest gift in the institution's 124-year history on July 25, 2000. Clark and Mary McLeod, on behalf of McLeodUSA, will donate $4 million to help build a new sports arena on the UNI campus.

According to UNI President Robert D. Koob, this is the lead gift to support construction of the $15 million McLeodUSA Center, which will become the primary performance venue for UNI intercollegiate men's and women's basketball, volleyball and wrestling.

"This arena will be the first visible element of a collaboration between UNI and McLeodUSA to promote student excellence," said Koob. "Other elements of this collaboration may include internships, technology enhancements, scholarships and other opportunities."

"UNI is committed to its students and to serving the state of Iowa," said Clark McLeod, chairman and chief executive officer, McLeodUSA. "We have a similar commitment. Our future growth will depend on our ability to attract and retain people who are willing to grow, who value relationships and who have the passion and commitment to be the best they can be. Iowa needs to keep these people here in the state. We see this gift as an investment. It's an investment in the University of Northern Iowa and it's an investment in future opportunities for all Iowans."

According to UNI Athletic Director Rick Hartzell, the arena will contain approximately 5,000 to 6,000 seats and will be located on the campus's west side, near the UNI-Dome and Wellness/Recreation Center. Once funds are secured, construction is expected to take approximately 24 to 36 months.

"UNI has some of the best student athletes, coaches and teams of any institution in the Midwest," said Hartzell. "What we don't have is a facility to match our people in these programs. The McLeodUSA Center will be one of the best of its size in the nation; an outstanding facility in which to showcase our quality student athletes and athletic programs."

The McLeod gift also is the lead gift to the UNI Foundation's $75 million "Students First" campaign - the next phase of a recent, highly successful scholarship campaign that exceeded its goal, raising $14 million. The new, broader "Students First" campaign will focus on scholarships, academic programs and facilities.

"This facility will serve the communities of the Cedar Valley," said Bill Calhoun, UNI vice president for Advancement and president of the UNI Foundation. "Similar to the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, the McLeodUSA Center will be another result of a successful private/public partnership between UNI and the Cedar Valley."

New construction covered by the Students First campaign will include the McLeodUSA Center; R.J. McElroy Hall, the university's new early childhood education facility on the Allen College campus, in Waterloo; and a human performance center. Facilities needing renovation or equipment are Russell Hall, Lang Hall, and McColl um Science Hall.

According to Calhoun, the offical campaign kickoff will take place in 2002. The university's last major campaign ended in 1995, raising more than $33 million, and exceeding its goal of $25 million.

Ground-level dug outs have been added since that time to afford protection for the athletes from the possibility of inclement weather. These were remodeled in 1995 to provide a better playing atmosphere. However, if the weather dictates that games can no longer be played outdoors, the Panthers have the advantage of being able to play indoors in the UNI-Dome, a unique, multi purpose athletic facility built in 1976, that has gained a reputation as one of the finest colle giate facilities in America. The Dome combines the features of a fieldhouse, football stadium, and large auditorium. In addition to Panther football, basketball, softball, wrestling and track events, it has played host to the NCAA Division I-AA football playoffs, the 1997 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, gymnastics and wrestling championships, high school football and basketball and the Iowa high school football playoffs. The turf was replaced five years ago with a new Astroturf manufactured by Balsam Corporation, the same material that lasted 16 years prior to the installation of the new surface. It's a premier surface utilized by every Dome facility in North America with the exception of one, and offers the best durability and playability of any material on the market. In 1998, the Dome roof got a new facelift, exchanging its air-supported Teflon roof with a more permanent one. Approximately 16,400 spectators can be seated for football games and track meets, and although normal capacity is 10,000 for basketball, seating can be expanded to over 20,000. UNI softball has hosted 10 tournaments in the Dome, placing two fields opposite each other on the turf. The tourney field has included nationally-ranked teams, including Nebraska, as well as Missouri Valley Conference members Drake and Bradley and strong teams such as Augustana of South Dakota, Wisconsin-Parkside and last year's Division II cham pion, Mankato State. UNI Media Information Press facilities are very limited at the UNI Softball Field. The field has no enclosed press box at this time. If you are covering a game, prepare for inclement weather. The contest may even be moved into the UNI-Dome. In any event, there are few electrical outlets for use, and there are no phone lines. If you need to use the fax machine or a phone after the second game of a doubleheader, please contact Bryan O'Neil, student assistant in charge of softball, in the Media Relations Office, (319) 273-5455 or at home, (319) 277-0309 before the day of a game. The UNI Softball Field is located behind the UNI-Dome and to the northwest. Free parking is available and there is no admission charge for games. Head coach Sara Hayes, assistant coach Christy Hebert and players are available for interviews on most occasions after the second game of a doubleheader. Interviews may be arranged with Hayes at (319) 273-4487. If media or any member of an opponent's sports information office are unable to attend a game, please call before the day of a game to request statistics and/or box scores of the game. These will be available approximately one hour after the second game of a doubleheader.
