Hayes is replacing Meredith Bakely who retired after coaching UNI for 22 seasons. Hayes is taking over a Panther squad that finished 28-32 a year ago and in a regular season tie for first-place in the Missouri Valley Conference. Hayes comes to UNI after serving the last five seasons as an assistant at DePaul University in Chicago, IL. The Blue Demons made it to the College World Series each of the past two seasons. These were the first such appearances in the history of the school. Last season, DePaul finished 40-22 and 10th in the final USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll. The coaching staff was named the NFCA's Na tional Coaching Staff of the Year in 1999 and the Midwest Staff of the Year during the past season. Hayes coached 11 GTE Academic All-Americans as well as 11 Louisville Slugger All-Americans. Hayes graduated from Notre Dame in 1995 with a degree in Anthropology. She was responsible for setting numerous records while playing softball there. Hayes was the 1995 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and a three-time all-Mideast Region selection. She was the Irish MVP as both a junior and senior when the Irish earned berths in the NCAA Tournament. Hayes was also MCC Newcomer of the Year in 1992. When she left Notre Dame, she was the all-time leader in 10 offensive 2001 Panther Coaching Staff categories and the holder of eight single- season school records. A native of Rancho Santa Fe, Califor nia, Hayes currently resides in Cedar Falls.
