June / July 2011 JUNE / JULY 2011 www.jazzhusmontmartre.dk Jazzhus Montmartre · Store Regnegade 19A · 1110 Copenhagen K · Denmark Café open Mon-Fri from 12, Sat from 10 · Dinner booking at (+45) 31 72 34 94 Ticket booking at (+45) 70 15 65 65 DANISH-NORWEGIAN STAR TRIO FRIDAY CARSTEN DAHL TRIO Jun 03 20.00 (8pm) Carsten Dahl (piano / DK), Arild Andersen (bass / NO), Jon Christensen (drums / NO) DKK 375 Carsten Dahl started out on drums (with Alex Riel as his teacher!), but after SATURDAY two years at the music conservatory he instead went on to playing piano, and he has never looked back since. He never received any training and yet Jun 04 he has worked his way to play with the likes of Ed Thigpen, Randy Brecker 20.00 (8pm) and Joe Lovano and along the way received numerous prizes including Danish Winner of the Jazzpar 2000. It is obvious why Carsten Dahl is Den- DKK 375 mark’s most wanted jazz pianist, and at Montmartre we are happy to finally presenting his latest trio project featuring two of Norway’s most prominent jazz artists: Arild Andersen whom we are not afraid to call one of Europe’s leading bass players today, and Jon Christensen, a true innovator and original on drums. HANS ULRIK / LARS JANSSON QUARTET IN SUPREME TRIBUTE THURSDAY A LOVE SUPREME Jun 09 JOHN COLTRANE TRIBUTE 20.00 (8pm) DKK 350 Hans Ulrik (sax / DK), Lars Jansson (piano / SE) Thomas Fonnesbæk (bass / DK), FRIDAY Paul Svanberg (drums / DK) Jun 10 The album A Love Supreme stands out as John Coltrane’s contribution to the nu- 20.00 (8pm) merous lists of greatest jazz albums of all times. At this point of his too short ca- reer he seemed to have reached his personal peak and clarity as a musician with a DKK 350 mission. But already before, and also after, Coltrane kept composing and playing SATURDAY classic and varied styles of jazz pieces that generations after him still embrace. At Montmartre we have invited a carefully chosen team to present and master the Jun 11 Coltrane musical heritage. Both Hans Ulrik and Lars Jansson are known for their 20.00 (8pm) melodic persuasion, great swing and ability to capture the core soul of a song, DKK 350 which have often brought them to work outside the Scandinavian borders. On bass they are bringing Thomas Fonnesbæk and on drums Paul Svanberg. MULTIFACETED WORLD CLASS DRUMMER THURSDAY PETER ERSKINE QUARTET Jun 16 20.00 (8pm) Peter Erskine (drums / US), Benjamin Koppel (sax / DK), TBA (piano), Johannes Weidenmueller (bass / DE) DKK 375 FRIDAY Peter Erskine is perhaps today’s most in demand drummer. Early in his career in the 1970’s he was part of the notorious rhythm section in Weather Report Jun 17 together with Jaco Pastorius. Later he would move on to playing several big 20.00 (8pm) bands as well as adding his musicality to artist projects such as those of Kate Bush, Diana Krall and Queen Latifah. With a very versatile style and understand- DKK 375 ing of music, Peter Erskine is, besides touring and recording also composing and SATURDAY arranging music for theater, dance, film and television. At our jazz club he will introduce us a newcomer to the Montmartre, but certainly not newcomer to the Jun 18 international jazz scene, and by the way Peter Erskine’s own favourite bass player, 20.00 (8pm) Johannes Weidenmueller. DKK 375 INTERCULTURAL SOUNDS FROM DANISH STAR TRIO FRIDAY BLUE LOTUS FEAT. MIKKEL NORDSØ Jun 24 TINE REHLING AND OLE THEILL 20.00 (8pm) DKK 225 Mikkel Nordsø (guitar / DK), Tine Rehling (harp / DK), Ole Theill (tablas / DK) The Blue Lotus project has already been presented abroad and as far away as Brazil to sold out concerts and raving reviews. Now, in Copenhagen, Jazzhus Montmartre proudly presents a trio project in the borderland of jazz, Indian and classical music with Denmark’s most famous guitarist, most busy harpist and most imaginative drummer. We are talking Mikkel Nordsø, Tine Rehling and Ole Teill and together they give us music with edge, vitality and virtuosity – a pure luxury life performance in the fine acoustics of Montmartre! TRIBUTE TO A MASTER AND A MENTOR SATURDAY CHRISTINA VON BÜLOW Jun 25 ’GETZ ALUMNI’ 20.00 (8pm) DKK 275 Christina von Bülow (sax / DK), Ben Besiakov (piano / DK), Daniel Franck (bass / DK), Frands Rifbjerg (drums / DK) Legendary Stan Getz’ impact on Denmark is not only found in the history of Montmartre, but also in the present of Danish saxophonist Christina von Bülow’s playing. Stan Getz was the sound that came out of the speakers in her childhood home as well as the teacher who would later introduce her to the world behind that characteristic sound. Christina von Bülow describes her meeting with Stan Getz as inspirational to the level of placing Getz as a mentor with a big influence on her development as a musician. At this one night only concert, Christina von Bülow presents those Stan Getz tunes that has influenced her the most and also shows us the truly remarkable musician she has become. With her she brings the strong quartet she has collaborated with so many times before: Ben Besiakov on piano, Daniel Franck on bass and Frands Rifbjerg on drums. MODERN JAZZ DRUMMER IN RESIDENCE AT MONTMARTRE FRIDAY ADAM NUSSBAUM PRESENTS Jun 30 KIND OF BLUE REVISITED 20.00 (8pm) DKK 440 Adam Nussbaum (drums /US), Gerard Presencer (trumpet / UK), Benjamin Koppel (alto sax / DK), Michael Bladt (tenor sax / DK), Thomas Clausen (piano / DK), Morten Ramsbøl (bass / DK) Modern jazz’ most versatile drummer Adam Nussbaum impresses his audiences no matter what advanced setting he plays in. He has regularly performed with Dave Lieb- man and John Scofield, and has freelanced among Stan Getz, Gil Evans, James Moody, Joe Henderson, Lee Konitz and many more. During his 5-night stay at Montmartre he continues to take the stage in different settings. The night before the Copenhagen Jazz Festival officially starts Nussbaum joins forces with a Copenhagen-based all-star team and revisits the iconic Miles Davis album Kind of Blue. In February our tribute concert to one of jazz’ most significant albums sold out quickly. Now Montmartre presents another chance to catch this exclusive act, jazz history performed live on a historic stage. • Gerry Mulligan Discography
GERRY MULLIGAN DISCOGRAPHY GERRY MULLIGAN RECORDINGS, CONCERTS AND WHEREABOUTS by Gérard Dugelay, France and Kenneth Hallqvist, Sweden January 2011 Gerry Mulligan DISCOGRAPHY - Recordings, Concerts and Whereabouts by Gérard Dugelay & Kenneth Hallqvist - page No. 1 PREFACE BY GERARD DUGELAY I fell in love when I was younger I was a young jazz fan, when I discovered the music of Gerry Mulligan through a birthday gift from my father. This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

  • Paolo Fresu Devil Quartet
PAOLO FRESU DEVIL QUARTET Paolo Fresu (tpt, flh, eff) – Bebo Ferra (g) – Paolino Dalla Porta (cb) – Stefano Bagnoli (dr) Devil… beyond the good inventions of the Italian style In order to help us in this presentation we are using a part of the accurate title of a feature by the sorely missed Italian journalist Vittorio Franchini, who labelled the Paolo Fresu led quartet music as “a good invention of the Italian Style”. Wise people know very well that it’s no good to ‘rest on one’s laurels’, which is what very often happens in the contemporary commercial music scene. Kudos to Fresu and to this extraordinary band that, after an electric beginning on the heels of the successful experience of the ‘Angel’ quartet, found new sap with the new ‘Devil’. And these ‘Devil’ have run a long way in the music territories of our times. Therefore, after this electric and powerful start, through Fresu’s idea of a new meaning of cross breed music or -as he defines it, melange- many were wondering where the quartet music could go. Well, Fresu, Ferra, Dalla Porta and Bagnoli take everyone by surprise proposing the most electric band of the Italian jazz scene of the last few years in a completely acoustic version, subverting canons and habits, also the drowsy habits of many journalists that find it easy to hastily stick labels on a certain project. Fresu’s simply new, and in a way unsettling, idea is to release a completely different record from the previous albums, whose strength lies the fact that is a completely acoustic, played on completely acoustic instruments (including Bebo Ferra’s guitars and Stefano Bagnoli only brushes technique, in which he is a true master).

  • Dino Rubino Quartet
Dino Rubino Quartet “time of silence” Dino Rubino, flicorno e pianoforte; Emanuele Cisi, sax; Paolino Dalla Porta, contrabbasso; Enzo Zirilli, batteria After the lucky experience of the long tour of the theatre show 'Tempo di Chet' with Paolo Fresu and Marco Bardoscia, Dino Rubino releases the fifth album for Tǔk Music, titled 'time of silence' and he is ready to bring the new experience live in concert. In the new project, which contains 10 new songs entirely composed by him, Dino brings back to work his quartet, that is one of the most interesting groups of the last years of Italian jazz; with him (both on piano and flugelhorn) there are Emanuele Cisi on tenor saxophone, Paolino Dalla Porta on double bass and Enzo Zirilli on drums. The four instruments dialogue with each other like a single voice and move following a univocal feeling of deep serenity and harmony. Evident is the natural evolution, from the previous work 'Where is the happiness?' several times at the center of numerous positive feedbacks from both critics and audience. In the music of the quartet, the Sicilian multi-instrumentalist synthesizes his musical listening made of classical, jazz, pop, folk and blues music through a deep emotionality. The love for melody remains the main instance that guides him through the many musical worlds and the pieces take on a kinematic character, soundtracks of images and moments that emerge from the experience. The time of silence is a common good, the moment of waiting, the hope of a promise, respect, the intention of listening, the intimacy of prayer, the moment of concentration, but it is also awareness and courage to discover oneself.

  • Thomas Blachman, Carsten Dahl and Lennart Ginman Interpreted a Number of Jazz Standards on Blachman Introduces Standard Jazz & Rap, Vol
From a tight, rhythmic pulsing swing beat to abstract, dissolving free structures, it is music of its GinmanBlachmanDahl time rooted in the classic, beguiling melancholy of jazz, yet simultaneously invoking a universal meeting among three virtuoso instrumentalists. It is an attempt to make time stand still, in a moment of utter selflessness in the service of music. Three instruments conversing in a pure language without small talk and automatism. Each member of the trio is a leading figure on the Danish music scene. All three have a large body of work behind them, testament to extreme artistic diversity and freedom in their creative approach. GinmanBlachmanDahl occasionally take part in musical meetings with other artists, including such names as Palle Mikkelborg, Nils Petter Molvær, Claus Hempler and Stephen Riley. This album is produced in collaboration with Danish loudspeaker manufacturer, DALI, whose hi-fi speakers are acclaimed for a clear, authentic and natural sound that reproduces the music as intended by the artists. DALI has released several compilations with the aim to give music lovers a clear, dynamic and natural sound experience - all done in respect and admiration for music, the artists and our audience. The Velvet Blues is the trio’s third release. Previous releases include: GinmanBlachmanDahl is an exceptional trio on the Scandinavian jazz scene in 2020. The Library Bar Concerts (2003) The group consists of three of the country’s most significant musical personalities. The trio was the GinmanBlachmanDahl (2004) first Danish group ever released by legendary Verve Records.
