SOC. 58: 59–65, 2012 First Record of the Cyprinid Fish, Esomus metallicus (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae) from Sumatra Sakda Arbsuwan1*, Prachya Musikasinthorn1, Melfa Marini2 and Husnah Samhudi2 The cyprinid fish genusEsomus is characterized by elongated and compressed body with rounded abdomen; a pair of maxillary barbels which are very long and reach the ventral fin origin; and, dorsal and anal fins with short bases at the posterior portion of body T( ALWAR & JHINGRAN, 1991; SMITH, 1945; RAINBOTH, 1996; KOttELAT, 2001). The genus is distributed from the Indian sub-continent to Indochina including Myanmar and the Malay Peninsula (TALWAR & JHINGRAN, 1991; JAYARAM, 1999; KOTTELAT, 1989; 1998; 2001). Presently 11 species are recognized as valid (ESCHMEYER, 2012). During a field survey by the authors (PM, MM and HS) in central Sumatra from 8 to 25 October 2011, five specimens ofEsomus were collected from a small stream in the Reteh River basin, Batang District, Riau Province (Figs. 1 and 2). The specimens have been identified as E. metallicus Ahl, 1923, the most common and widely distributed species in Indochina. This is the first record of the genus and species from the island of Sumatra as well as Indonesia. This paper provides a brief morphological description of the specimens. A map of whole distributional range of E. metallicus based on voucher specimens and literature records is also provided as well as discussion on a status of the present record. With this concern and the growing interest in administrative restructure in developing countries, many political scientists and economists have argued that social capital is an important determinant of economic development and of the functioning of institutions. Social capital has commonly been studied in recent years from the perspective of sociology and political science; however, social capital alone cannot explain all of the phenomena to which it has been related. Thus, much more needs to be known about how social capital is related to various affecting factors and what the indicators and benefits of social capital are. In this dissertation, the goal of the study was to explore empirically one particular concept of “social capital” concerning whether it really exists and through what indicators formed in Thai rural communities. Secondly, through different case studies it would be possible to identify the degrees of social capital in different sub- districts. Thirdly, within the political perspective the study will find out whether social capital benefits or affects the choice of local leadership. -

The main aims of the project are to minimize the geological discontinuities along the Malaysia- Thailand border and to update the geological information of the two countries in various scales. Details on Geology, Stratigraphic correlation and Geohazard of the Transect area along the Malaysia-Thailand border have been presented and discussed during the meeting held at Kantary Beach Khao Lak Hotel. Correlation of rock units, stratigraphy and fossil assemblages of the northern part of the Malaysian side and southern part of the Thai side can be made at some levels. Field check routes show a large variety of geological evidences on the Thai side including typical rock units, fossils, geotourism and mineral deposits at the Ko Yao Noi and Takuapa - Phang- nga and Ao Luk area. The first place is known as the significant areas of the type locality of the Early Permian succession and beautiful karst topography limestone. Takuapa - Phang-nga places are localities for various case studies of mineral deposits, hot spring and huge of beautiful Permian karst topography whereas the third place is known as the area for abundant fossils assemblages in the Paleozoic rocks. -

Thai Mueang Geography The province is on the west side of the Malay Peninsula, and includes the many islands of the Phang Nga Bay. The most famous one is the so-called James Bond Island, a needle formed limestone rock in the sea, which featured in the 1974 movie The Man with the Golden Gun. Ao Phang Nga (Phang Nga Bay) National Park was established in 1981 to protect the many islands. The Similan Islands and Surin Islands, two of Thailand's main diving destinations, are also part of Phang Nga Province. History Phang Nga is the modern Thai transliteration of the archaic Malay word pangan, literally 'jungle'. The phrase orang pangan denotes 'heathen, pagan, primitive people', in reference to a generalised tribe or people typically inhabiting jungle areas of the Malay Peninsula and its offshore islands. Historically, during the reign of King Rama II, nearby areas (including Thalang, now known as Phuket) were occupied by the Burmese and so many people fled to Kraphu Nga. In 1824 when Siamese troops defeated the Burmese and they were expelled, King Rama III renamed the area adjacent to the bay phang-nga. -

Introduction Thailand, as one of the world biodiversity hot spots on our planet, hosts a very unique inventory of Diplopoda. The Thai millipede fauna is very rich but poorly explored. Most of the known species were described in the 1960’s and later. ENGHOFF (2005) listed 105 species of Diplopoda for Thailand. Within the last years additional 13 species in the family Harpago- phoridae (PIMVICHAI et al. 2009a, 2009b, 2010), five new species in the family Paradoxsomatidae (ENGHOFF et al.
