Tra- ditionally, long GRBs are expected to be produced by the collapse of massive stars and associated with supernovae. However, some low-redshift long GRBs have no detection of supernova association, such as GRBs 060505, 060614 and 111005A. It is hard to classify these events convincingly according to usual classifications, and the lack of the supernova implies a non-massive star origin. We propose a new path to produce long GRBs without supernova association, the unstable and extremely violent accretion in a contact binary system consisting of a stellar-mass black hole and a white dwarf, which fills an important gap in compact binary evolution. For the avoidance of breach, certain obligations and responsibilities of the parties to the contract need to be performed promptly. Ocean transport is an expensive venture and a shipowner could suffer considerable financial losses if an unnecessary but serious delay interrupt the vessel’s earning power in the course of the charterer’s performance of his contractual obligation. On the other hand, a charterer could also incur a substantial loss if arrangements for the shipment and receipt of cargo fail to go according to plan as a result of the shipowner’s failure to perform his charterparty obligation timely and with reasonable diligence. With these considerations in mind, this thesis critically explores the concept of timely performance in the discharge of the contractual obligations of parties to a contract of carriage. While the thesis is not an expository of the occurrence of time in all the obligations of parties to the carriage contract, it focusses particularly on the identity, scope, and limitations of timeliness in the context of timely payment of hire, laytime and reasonable despatch. -

We undertake a population synthesis study to compute the delay-time distribution of core-collapse supernovae, that is, the supernova rate versus time following a starburst, taking into account binary interactions. We test the systematic robustness of our results by running various simulations to account for the uncertainties in our standard assumptions. We find that +9 a significant fraction, 15−8%, of core-collapse supernovae are “late”, that is, they occur 50–200 Myr after birth, when all massive single stars have already exploded. -

Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars with fast rotating cores are thought to be the direct progenitors of long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs). A well accepted evolutionary channel towards LGRBs is chemically-homogeneous evolution at low metallicities, which completely avoids a red supergiant (RSG), or luminous blue variable (LBV) phase. On the other hand, strong absorption features with velocities of several hundred km s−1 have been found in some LGRB afterglow spectra (GRB 020813 and GRB 021004), which have been attributed to dense circumstellar (CS) material that has been ejected in a previous RSG or LBV phase, and is interacting with a fast WR-type stellar wind. Aims. Here we investigate the properties of Galactic WR stars and their environment to identify similar evolutionary channels that may lead to the formation of LGRBs. Methods. We compile available information on the spectropolarimetric properties of 29 WR stars, the presence of CS ejecta for 172 WR stars, and the CS velocities in the environment of 34 WR stars in the Galaxy. -
Highlights of Discoveries for $\Delta $ Scuti Variable Stars from the Kepler
Highlights of Discoveries for δ Scuti Variable Stars from the Kepler Era Joyce Ann Guzik1,∗ 1Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM 87545 USA Correspondence*: Joyce Ann Guzik [email protected] ABSTRACT The NASA Kepler and follow-on K2 mission (2009-2018) left a legacy of data and discoveries, finding thousands of exoplanets, and also obtaining high-precision long time-series data for hundreds of thousands of stars, including many types of pulsating variables. Here we highlight a few of the ongoing discoveries from Kepler data on δ Scuti pulsating variables, which are core hydrogen-burning stars of about twice the mass of the Sun. We discuss many unsolved problems surrounding the properties of the variability in these stars, and the progress enabled by Kepler data in using pulsations to infer their interior structure, a field of research known as asteroseismology. Keywords: Stars: δ Scuti, Stars: γ Doradus, NASA Kepler Mission, asteroseismology, stellar pulsation 1 INTRODUCTION The long time-series, high-cadence, high-precision photometric observations of the NASA Kepler (2009- 2013) [Borucki et al., 2010; Gilliland et al., 2010; Koch et al., 2010] and follow-on K2 (2014-2018) [Howell et al., 2014] missions have revolutionized the study of stellar variability. The amount and quality of data provided by Kepler is nearly overwhelming, and will motivate follow-on observations and generate new discoveries for decades to come. Here we review some highlights of discoveries for δ Scuti (abbreviated as δ Sct) variable stars from the Kepler mission. The δ Sct variables are pre-main-sequence, main-sequence (core hydrogen-burning), or post-main-sequence (undergoing core contraction after core hydrogen burning, and beginning shell hydrogen burning) stars with spectral types A through mid-F, and masses around 2 solar masses. -
