Ontario Has a Power Problem
Ontario Has a Power Problem. By KAREN HOWLETT TORONTO — From Friday's Globe and Mail Published Friday, Jan. 08, 2010 Ontario has a power problem. A strategy to subsidize the province's nascent green energy industry is starting to sting businesses and many households that find themselves paying the biggest markups on electricity pricing in the country. Even as electricity demand - and market prices - dropped last year with the global economic downturn , electricity bills have risen steadily on the back of generous contracts signed by the province's power planning agency. Now, the government of Premier Dalton McGuinty is preparing for a looming political backlash. What's at stake is an industrial strategy that's on a collision course with a century- old policy of delivering electricity to consumers at the lowest possible cost. After the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs in the manufacturing heartland, Mr. McGuinty vowed to create more than 50,000 new ones through the Green Energy Act. But he is building this new sector - and burnishing his green credentials - by ratcheting up electricity costs. The average market price for electricity in Ontario is at its lowest level since the market was opened up in 2002. It was 3.3 cents a kilowatt hour yesterday, compared with a record high average of 9.97 cents in September, 2005. But customers are not reaping the benefits of lower prices because the government is recovering the cost of new projects from power users. The government is luring green-energy investors with the promise of generous long- term contracts that include a guaranteed revenue stream. -

Understanding Ipperwash
Treaties Matter Understanding Ipperwash Message from Chief Cloud Aannii From the Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point, I am pleased to provide a brief report on the happenings in our community in relation to the Ipperwash file. First of all I would like to thank everyone in the Anishinabek Nation for your continued and on-going support for our communities of Wiikedong and Aazhoodena. We thank all the people who came out for our recent Gathering at the former Ipperwash Park on October 15 & 16, 2010. We organized this gathering to honour, thank and remember those strong ones that stood beside Dudley the night of the fatal shooting. At the Gathering, we announced that Dudley did not die in vain, for we have uncovered our ancestors’ remains in the former Ipperwash Park, through the archeological study. The study which is still on-going is being completed by Timmins Martelle Heritage Consultants Inc. whose lead archeologist is Brandy George, a member of our community. We also unveiled the monument in honour of Dudley, which was designed by his brother Pierre George-Mandoka. We shared and cried many tears as we listened to the stories of that fateful weekend in 1995. The support of Anishinabek Nation Grand Chief Patrick Madahbee and Deputy Grand Chief Glen Hare is sincerely appreciated. In relation to the former Ipperwash Park, the Resolution Team continues to meet to discuss items such as the archeological study, the environmental assessment, the official survey, third party interests and matters related to the transfer of the park to the Department of Indian Affairs, which will hold the lands in trust for our people. -

Do Good Intentions Beget Good Policy? Two Steps Forward and One Step Back in the Construction of Domestic Violence in Ontario by April Lucille Girard-Brown A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen‟s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada January, 2012 Copyright ©April Lucille Girard-Brown, 2012 Abstract The construction of domestic violence shifted and changed as this issue was forced from the private shadows to the public stage. This dissertation explores how government policy initiatives - Bill 117: An Act to Better Protect Victims of Domestic Violence and the Domestic Violence Action Plan (DVAP) - shaped our understanding of domestic violence as a social problem in the first decade of the twenty-first century in Ontario. Specifically, it asks whose voices were heard, whose were silenced, how domestic violence was conceptualized by various stakeholders. In order to do this I analyzed the texts of Bill 117, its debates, the DVAP, as well as fourteen in-depth interviews with anti- violence advocates in Ontario to shed light on their construction of the domestic violence problem. Then I examined who (both state and non-state actors) regarded the work as „successful‟, flawed or wholly ineffective. In particular, I focused on the claims and counter-claims advanced by MPPs, other government officials, feminist or other women‟s group advocates and men‟s or fathers‟ rights group supporters and organizations. The key themes derived from the textual analysis of documents and the interviews encapsulate the key issues which formed the dominant construction of domestic violence in Ontario between 2000 and 2009: the never-ending struggles over funding, debates surrounding issues of rights and responsibilities, solutions proposed to address domestic violence, and finally the continued appearance of deserving and undeserving victims in public policy. -

May 30, 2018 FRW respectfully asks the Toronto Zoo Board of Management to fully comply with provincial and federal laws, plans and policies by amending the draft Toronto (Zoo), TRCA and Parks Canada Tripartite Agreement to: 1. Transfer all existing Rouge Park and Valley Nature Reserves and ANSIs to Parks Canada for Rouge NU Park, instead of licensing some 200 acres to the Toronto Zoo; FRW Patrons 2. Transfer the 41 acres of existing Rouge Park Restoration / Nature Reserve public lands and Ontario Greenbelt NHS lands to Parks Canada for Rouge NU Park, instead of Lois James, "Save the Rouge" founding member licensing them to the Toronto Zoo for another expensive and unsustainable Zoo and Order of Canada expansion which would undermine existing Rouge Park and Ontario Greenbelt Plan Recipient policies and Rouge NU Park's legislated priority for ecological integrity, by building on lands which are vital to connecting two Rouge Park ANSIs; Hon. The pair visited with nurses at and Long-Term Care The Scarborough Hospital (Birchmount Site) for a tour of the maternity and intensive care units. “Mr. Speaker, this is Nursing Week in Ontario. And May 12th is International Nurses Day. It’s a wonderful opportu- nity to recognize nurses for their commitment, knowledge and compassion, and thank them for their relentless determination to improve our health-care system and — more importantly — the health of Ontarians. Nursing Week really is something to celebrate. And there’s no better place to celebrate than in Ontario. If you understand health care and are commit- ted to building the best possible health-care system, you know that you simply can’t do it without nurses. As we celebrate Nursing Week, my message to nurses is this: Ontario needs you. 1 M INISTRY OF CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION D OMESTIC V IOLENCE A CTION P LAN FOR ONTARIO A Domestic Violence Action Plan for Ontario 2 P REMIER’ S MESSAGE Our government is committed to protecting women and children from domestic violence. We believe that women and children have the right to live free from fear and violence. One of the very fi rst actions I took as Premier was to appoint my then parliamentary assistant, Laurel Broten, to conduct province- wide stakeholder consultations to develop a package of reforms aimed at reducing domestic violence. On December 13, 2004, I was pleased to join Sandra Pupatello, Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues, in announcing our government’s Domestic Violence Action Plan. It is a long-term, comprehensive and collaborative approach. It strikes the right balance between preventing violence against women and improving supports for women and their children when it does happen. It will help us change attitudes to stop domestic violence from happening in the fi rst place. It will help strengthen the justice system’s response to domestic violence. I am proud of this plan. I am proud of all of those who worked so hard to develop it. I am also proud of those who will continue to work tirelessly to implement it. All of us, all Ontarians, have a role to play in ending violence against women. The success of this plan will depend not only on the eff orts of our government, but of those who work on the frontlines to help women and children deal with the eff ects of domestic violence. -
