Letter of Thanks from a Grateful Patient

July 18, 2007 Women’s College Hospital 76 Grenville Street Toronto. ON M5S 1B2

Dear Executive Team, Board of Directors and Staff,

It is with great admiration, respect and appreciation that I write this letter to honour the team of professionals who generously shared with me their expertise and compassion. I believe, Helen Mark. Leslie Good, Dr. Holloway, Dr. Semple and the resident doctors, are truly the “heart and soul” behind my personal healing.

In January 2007 I was diagnosed with DCI in my breast and it was determined the best course of treatment for me was a mastectomy. On February 14th, Valentines Day, I lost my left breast. Today, July 18, 2007, I have completed full reconstruction and feel like a whole woman both physically and emotionally. The trauma of loosing a breast triggers a roller coaster of feelings and a host of memories for a woman - from your first bra, to nursing your children, to the jokes women share about their bodies as they age.

As much as women with breast cancer can join together and share common feelings, from my perspective, it is a unique journey guided by the circumstances and people in our lives. My husband, after 25 years of marriage, left me 3 weeks after my mastectomy and my family of origin lives many miles away. This combination could have resulted in my breast cancer journey being a lonely and isolating experience. Fortunately this was not the case, for the walk I took through this phase of my life was not only filled with the love and support of my many friends, butI was embraced by the wings of the angels that have dedicated themselves to the patients of Women’s College Hospital. The staff of the hospital gave me the strength and confidence I needed to face my diagnosis, prepare for healing and come through the other side knowing it is the people we meet along the way that colour our lives.

I am a 48 year old woman, with a beautiful story to tell. It was truly a blessing to have been placed in the hands of the competent staff of Women’s College Hospital. Please congratulate this team of dedicated professionals and remind them that they are making this world a better place.

With appreciation,

Lana Feinstein

Best Wishes, Mary!
